Can anyone explain to me why the club (according to media reports) that has significant funds ($80M) in the bank are not willing to pay over the soft cap, and hence pay the tax.
Its arguable that the Eagles have not dealt with the cutting of soft cap/resources in comparison to others.
Are we putting profit before people?
Why don't we bite the bullet and give the team the best resources (development staff, fitness staff, welfare offices, coaches, recruiting staff etc) money can buy, as West Coast will always be wealthy.
It's a fair point.

The more well off clubs don't seem to do it.

Don't agree about Kerr.
Thought he was pretty much always good.
Until he wasn't.

He was frustrated, injury prone and copping a lot of attention from the opposition.

It was the emergence of Shuey, Gaff, Priddis and co to ease the burden on him he rediscovered some form in the latter part of his career

Because the AFL would penalise them significantly for going against the spirit of the rules. Basically the comp would fall over as so many clubs are living on charity if wealth was usable. The old boys club including WC stick together.

The penalty is the Tax which goes back into the AFL's coffers, so what other penalty could they justifiably give the Eagles
Maybe you are right in that the wealthy clubs along with the AFL have all agreed they won't go over the soft cap, but what's the point of saying there is a tax if you go over. If that is the case the AFL were better off just saying this is all you can spend, if you spend outside this, you will lose premiership points, be fined, lose draft picks etc.

Thats directly, the behind the scenes politics is far more powerful. You may have noticed the Eagles negotiating, yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir. They will never rock the boat as the comp would be so hurt TV rights would plummet etc and WC with the others would all fall with the tide.

The AFL is in the entertainment business. It is not a rigerous sporting competition where the strongest win. Thats why there are caps, drafts etc.

WC know they there to entertain, opium to the masses if you like. Rock the boat and there will be 6-8 teams and a major cut in revenue. Well over 50% of the nations population would suddenly be unrepresented.

Wonder what the early termination payout clause is in Simo's contract then?

And to be fair if AFL funded terminations are capped then everyone else should only have $600k portion of any terminations applied to their soft cap.

May already be the case!
Maybe he doesn't have payout clause.

It's because the poorer clubs were making bad decisions by overpaying coaches. I don't agree with it myself.

Pretty sure that's not the case with the soft cap.
Whatever Simmo gets paid comes out of it.

Think the something happened to Clarkson at Hawthorn.
Over $800 000 has come out of this year's cap.

We should someway find a way to be part of the mid season draft especially with us likely having pick one.
Surely with all our injuries we can off load another on the in active list
Think the Hawks picked up Newcombe in the mid season draft and he’s turned out be a ripper and looks like he’s going better than Tom Mitchell in there midfield

Kobe Ryan, very talented player. But he's small and slight, so I wouldn't use our first on him. If he was there around 19 I'd definitely look at him there.
If he had more size, he'd definitely be top 3. I just worry what role at AFL he plays, projects as a small skillfull forward. Would take him years to develop the body ready for midfield.

Surprised Hewett kicking wasn't great, he normally very good. Last year he looked very Rolls-Royce in the midfield. Hopefully he has a big game soon.

Dont we want Hewitt to slide, not big games? Especially if we split pick ala Dom Sheed/ Tent.

Hewitt & Broadbent could be an option if they get in their ear enough, of course we need a club to offer x2 pick (8-12) for it to happen. And then use our two second rounders could work nicely for a quick reset.

I assume we need a core of 8-12 players hitting B+ and 100 games before the next premiership window

Only applies to AFL fined clubs.
Not us.

Why should AFL funded club have a cap, if there is a contract and they terminate it before it comes to term then that club should be viable.

Wealthy clubs should not be held accountable when poor clubs are run so poorly. The AFL really need to understand rules should be for all clubs not just for some clubs.

Don't disagree that there are powers behind the scene's, but think you are jumping to some pretty big conclusions/assumptions.

While we’re in this position we need to start the ball rolling asap. Starting with the mid season draft. It would be negligent of us to not open up a spot or 2 and start grabbing some young talent to build on. We won’t be retiring anyone for it I hope to god because the likely candidates deserve better than that, so a couple of injured fellas need to take one for the team if they’re not going to be right until the back end of the year. Love to get hold of Derksen and Florenca

Watched the swans Claremont game, hoping it was just a down game but wasn’t overly impressed with Hewitt.
I understand he’s only a pup but 13 disposals and missed a fair few targets.

Reminds me a lot of Powell Pepper.
I would not be spending a top 4 draft pick on him unless his disposal efficiency improves
Still he is a 17 year old playing with men. He would have more time at Colts level.

If we are going to rebuild then Simpson needs to go for the pure fact he is on such a high salary .

He is on premiership coach wages and when your coaching staff is under the soft cap having such a high paid senior coach will be costing the club 3-4 development coaches/staff during a rebuild

That's an angle I hadn't thought of - valid point too perhaps.

Someone on here said kennedy said something about possibly not seeing the season out when he was on schoeys podcast i think it was.
No point in him being in the team now

Ashcroft is playing league footy and putting in bog performances. We don’t want to get hung up on local talent if we’ve got pick 1, just get the best mid we can get our hands on.
No doubt. Brisbane will sell their souls for him and he is a father and son pick you would think they would grab him.

Unless uncle Trev can convince him not to nominate Brisbane with the promise of starring in a few HJ commercials ;)

I’m just dreaming for Ashcroft to not nominate as a F/S for Brisbane, he’s the clear best player in this draft

PMBangers still loves Wardlaw and he seemingly knows his shit. I’m actually looking forward to the State Championships more than our own games atm.
