Means jackshit

I disagree. It’s another data point that can be analysed. It gives some evidence of goal scoring opportunities and the averages from those opportunities. It also gives evidence of a team’s goal kicking in relation to averages. If a team was consistently scoring below their expected, it would point to poor routines or technique throughout the squad.

There was a tweet I posted in a different thread that says despite getting the most shots at goal, we are below AFL average for conversion. Melbourne on the other hand were on top

My thoughts on poor conversion are the same as I had last year. Given it wasn't just our kicking for goal (the last disposal) that was poor, but also our kicking inside 50 (the second-last disposal), it's actually a wonder we were as close as we were tbh.

Bad kicking is bad football. If you think of every passage of play as a series of disposals, to reach the end goal of getting it between the big sticks, the final disposal in that chain has to be an accurate kick. If it misses, then it's no different to a handball in the middle of the ground that is fumbled and turned over, or a kick inside 50 that misses its target and is intercepted. If a team kept doing those things over and over, no one would say they're playing well, so I'm not sure why missing goals over and over is seen any differently.

Our goalkicking was just brilliant.

I think we are particularly poor at delivering to forwards directly in front. Our F50 marks and set shots often seem to be off at a tough angle.

It's really tough to judge because I feel like we are often at our best when we are getting the ball in long and fast, letting our forwards get to work.

Aka, long bombing.

We did that yesterday and it just wasn't working. May & Lever were mopping up everything. We needed to try lowering our eyes and identifying leading targets and/or those forwards needed to be better at leading so they could be better targets in the first place. It was probably a combination of both.

Yet there have been other games where we've tried to lower our eyes and identify leading targets, and it hasn't worked, then we started bombing it long and having far more success there.

So perhaps the solution isn't to bomb it more, or to lower our eyes more, but to simply be better at adjusting between the two based on what we need during any given game. It didn't feel like that adjustment was there yesterday. It felt like we just kept doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. A strength of ours last year was our ability to adjust our game style based on the game we were in. If we can do the same with our midfield-forward connection, we will be a lot better off.

We lost that in the midfield. Just seem to be a step or two behind at every contest. This resulted in fast forward entry for the Dees and just so happen to be the day they bought their kicking boors with them.

I thought Ladhams got absolutely towelled up by Grundy. His day was summed up by when he thought it more useful to gesticulate at the umpire then to chase a Melbourne mid. I really have my doubts about him. Hoping Hickey can see out the season when back which will buy time for Big Mac and Owens to develop.

Pete was not alone though. Our on ballers seemed incredibly fumbly and our disposal by both hand and foot was just so sloppy. The wingers didn't run today. Only Errol had any semblance of a good game. In many ways, reminded me of the 2022 GF effort.

Forward line was actually OK except for the shite goal kicking. Amartey clearly a superior option to Mclean, Buddy had a great 3Q, Logan did some nice things and looks to be building and Paps made the most of limited opportunities.

Defence was a mixed bag. The Mac brothers were good. However, Rampe got burnt off a few times and our smaller defenders wilted under the repeat, quality entries.

Changes for next week:

Sheldrick looking great at VFL level. I think it would be worth bringing him in and playing him on ball. Cunningham to make way - he did very little. Rotate our on ballers through his forward position. Stephens was pretty bad today but would like him to stay given his recent body of work. Roberts to return to VFL to get a full game. Corey Warner as sub. Tempted to drop Ladhams but not confident that Big Mac is ready or that Amartey and Mclean can carry our ruck for a whole game.
If we bring in Sheldrick he needs to play mids, not forward.

But they like to put 2 or 3 weeks full training into them , i would love him back , but not worth the risk . Really need Hickey as well .
What was your thoughts on Ladhams ?
Not sure he had a brain

If wasn’t for his height he wouldn’t be playing league footy

Amartey was good in the ruck . Won himself a few clearances.

Ladhams shits me no end when he has the ball and feels the need to fake a kick or handball every time. Just get rid of it, or better yet try avoid getting involved in link up play and let the blokes who are paid to move the ball do so

He won't kick

On expected score, you won't see Melbourne kick 21.8 again this year, I doubt that accuracy will be repeated more than a handful of times.

I remember when we lost to Essendon last year and they kicked 15.5 and were never that accurate again.

I remember beating Geelong, kicking 17.5, and guess what, we were never that accurate again.

The reason why expected score is useful is because accuracy tends to even out, and missing shots close to goal is better for the future than kicking goals from the boundary.

If we played the demons tomorrow they wouldn't kick 21.8, they would probably still win, but Melbourne won't replicate that accuracy.

Gained more metres than any other Swan , maybe we all expect him to be getting 30 every week and he is now getting more attention , but he'll work through it
Yeah I'm not saying he has been bad just think he hasn't been as explosive as last year. I don't even expect him to get 30, but still feel he has been down a bit. But yep, I have no doubt he will turn it around.

On reflection, I reckon there were a few factors to our loss:

1. We came off two easy wins and weren’t able to switch on the from the start and had forgotten a little bit what it takes once when the game is on line (ill discipline, falling away in the last).

2. Melbourne were up for this game. We have to remember that they were favourites when we beat them at the G in finals last year. They would have come prepared to not make the same mistakes again, and they didn’t.

3. Their list is a little more progressed than ours. I think Horse was right in the presser to note their depth of AA players and the gap with ours. I won’t say we can’t win this year, because I thought that last year and then we really turned in on - but we are away from being able to play to our potential right through the year.
