4. We didn’t kick straight.
5. We kept handballing to our opponents. How hard is it to handball? Answer, not that hard, even under pressure we used to be able to rely on handball
6. We didn't bring any pressure or any dare. Did we just think Melbourne would roll over?
7. Our tall forwards missed so many easy shots. The goal posts are big so it's easy to tell them apart from the point posts. Practice FFS, you're professionals
8. Our forwards were just standing together like bowling pins, cannon fodder for May, Lever et al.
9. We couldn't execute the most basic skills of footy, eg, a Melbourne late goal came when McInerney ran around the footy instead of picking it up
10. We kept kicking long to a contest, where the ball would spill to Petracca
13. Our leaders were giving away clumsy 50m penalties - setting an example
15, We had Ladhams dragging us down
16. Our defence was rubbish - where's Fox?
17. Have we not heard of front and centre? Petracca just stood by himself front and centre at every marking contest collecting every ball
18. Blakey thinks he's too talented to stick to the basics, so he keeps fluffing the simplest kicks
20. If our opposition had been as good as Geelong were on GF day, we'd have been beaten by 200+ points
21. We played a brand of football that our reserves wouldn't have dared to serve up
22. Melbourne turned up to play, we didn't expect that.
25. There was a lack of onfield leadership and I have no idea what Horse was telling them on the bench but it didn't sink in
26. Horse needs to ask how does a team take such a huge step backwards?
28. We missed Reid's contested marking badly. Only 7 for the entire game.

I could go on. I really feel like a good rant. I had to watch this game one quarter at a time, leaving a few hours to cool off each quarter. It took me another whole day before I could watch the last quarter. I hoped we might fight for some pride but somehow I knew we'd wheel out even worse rubbish just to ice the game for Melbourne. I don't want to watch a game like that again but we play at least one cringeworthy game every year.

In the GF we were at least trying to have a crack but Geelong were just genuinely superb. In this game we looked like amateurs, beaten easily by any half decent team. Hawthorn would have beaten us easily with that performance. That was a wooden-spoon-worthy effort.

Everyone watching that knew Buddy cannot kick the distance without doing himself damage.
a) He would have backed himself to out run his opponent towards goal .
b) He would have taken a shot as you say & kicked it 60 metres.

It's only his 2nd game after a week of for Christ's sake. Can't say I am filled with confidence.
Maybe I need a different approach with the Swans re Buddy.
Maybe I can just sit back not expecting to play & win finals, & just enjoy everything Buddy does, even if it's a shadow of his former self.

I tried that after the first quarter when I knew the game was gone.
I actually thought Buddy did OK though with a reduced capacity. The young blokes need to step up & nail their shots.
The problem is buddy is clearly losing confidence in himself, yet we still go through him every chance we get.

That's not a good combination

Gee I saw that game sooooo differently to most others on here, really didn't think we were that bad, not - 50 points bad anyway. As I said in another thread, it was just one of those days where the ball didn't bounce our way and everything we tried and that had worked so well against the inferior opposition we'd played the two weeks prior, the Dee's didn't let us get away with.
Learn and move on.

I remember one of our undisciplined games where Hall gave away 100 metres and we got
done.

It’s not a good sign when we start to lose our composure.

It’s actually pretty rare.

For me it stands to reason that the players were feeling particularly hard done by with the decisions following the effort.

No excuse for it just not something you see often from a proud leader led team.
Hayward was a total idiot in the first quarter.Seems to be dealing with some personal issues.

Bit histrionic this

Not sure I like the guesswork as to a player's personal situation.

Fair dinkum he does my head in with his decision-making but it doesn't have to be anything more than that.

We were right with them Jewelsy, 6 points in fact & should have hit the front.
BUT....
The 50 point defeat happened in 30 minutes.
That's an arrogance to have the talent to come from 5 goals down but then lose your shit by 50 points.

My take.... that was a 'mental' loss. We might not have played well but we lost it in the head space.

Poor positioning at stoppages, bad option taking, inaccurate kicking and a blow out last quarter. For me, they're all signs of poor concentration or not being mentally prepared. And it looked general, it wasn't just one or two it was team wide.

On that basis I could let that game go... put it down to a bad day but I'm concerned. Reality is we have been seriously challenged twice in the last 4 games and we were dead in the water at quarter time in both. Yes, we pushed a little harder this time but the writing was on the wall.

I can't put a finger on it as I'm not inside the walls but there must be a response and a prolonged one - 5 or 6 really strong, disciplined, courageous games that build belief and momentum. If it doesn't happen, we're cannon fodder finalists this year, at best.

I’d never heard of umpire Hayden Gavine before Sunday.

But he’s the bloke that kept awarding 50 for dissent every time we looked surprised at his stupid decisions.

Or, in one case, “stood up aggressively”.

Gavine thus joins Stevic and Gianfagna in the AFL Umpiring Hall of Shame.

Chances are we’ll get all three when we play the Bravedogs.

Longmire revealed in his presser today that Hayward's "dissent" was directed at a Melbourne player, not at an umpire. Crucial time of the game when Melbourne hadn't got a significant lead. How sensitive of an ump.. honestly. Insecure about his ability to umpire so he assumed it was directed towards him 🤣

Mills down on form. Must be multi generational trauma stemming from the experience of a world war experienced by his great grand parents.

Was that against the Hawks at the G ? We were getting well beaten then started to surge late on the the two fifties and the goal killed us. You could tell by the body language that the rest of the team just seemed to accept that Hall was a loose unit and was a lost cause. Goodes had a blinder that day . Pretty sure it was Halls last year with us.....

I'm still dumbfounded the coaching staff subbed off stephens for roberts. At least half a dozen other players they could've subbed off instead. Stephens did not deserve to get subbed off, it was the wrong move.

Game day tactics need improvement.
He was consistently uncompetitive the entire time he was on the field. Horse would have been fuming.

It is a pity HHK did not get a full game in the 2s to show his wares. He is the natural cover for Heeney and Wayward as a mobile medium.

Wayward cost us momentum and 2 or 3 goals in the first quarter. He was our worst player by far. The bloke has so many athletic gifts but remains low on footy IQ and loses the plot at the drop of a hat.

The VFL byes are a damned pain. Hill Wayward needs a spell there to recover confidence. I really doubt he will bounce back against Port. History suggests he follows a shocker with a succession of poor games.

I must admit that I was VERY surprised when I first heard that he was elevated to the leadership group.

Never struck me as a "come with me fellas" type of guy. But I guess you have to trust Horse, the coaches and the senior players who are with him every day.
WTH ?? The guy busts his ARSE every single game. A total workhorse.
Had a nearly game this week, if he takes those two marks he had 85% of we'd be singing his praises.
There's not many I'd want to swap him for across the entire AFL.
