One thing I would tell all our mids is watch clayton oliver. What a ****ing beast. Easily the dees best & imo most important player.

The frustrating this is with this game is the whole match until we were down within a kick was the similar or near exact blueprint we had when we knocked off the dees twice last year.

Started off slow trailing by 20-30 points, then wham. Few goals in a row and swing the momentum our way. Hit the lead, defence would solidify and keep their forward entries at bay, slot home some more and win the game.

Think we did everything right to bring the game back onto our terms and match that blueprint. Better ball movement, forward half pressure started to show, but we just couldn't execute. We would have a 5 minute surge of peppering them with repeated entries of good use but couldn't convert. All of a sudden now having like 5 more scoring shots than them.

Then after spraying all our shots, they go down the other end with one inside 50 entry and score a goal. Momentum all gone. It was the lack of execution, failing to score off their turnovers, lack of tackles and contested pressure with not many 50/50s and our defence off turnover and transition that failed us to match that winning blueprint from last year.

Plenty to learn off that game. Just my deep thoughts on it however. I think if we would've hit the lead by around 2 goals from kicking straight during that 3rd quarter, it could've been much more of a different game. Genuinely a piss take how we lost that by 50 points.

The first five minutes was a microcosm of the match. We dominated the first minute or two, keeping the ball in our half and had repeated entries for a solitary behind from Amartey, then they take the ball down the other end with ease and slot the first of the game. It was a bad sign out of the gates.

Thats typically what happens at one point we were 7-2 in the clearances for 1 point, so we put nothing on the board cause we just bombed to Franklin.

I take some solace from the fact that we've had a near identical first three rounds to last year.

Rounds 1 & 2 - Two solid wins where our transition from defence and sheer firepower inside 50 perhaps papered over the issues we had in the midfield.

Round 3 - The issues in the midfield get exposed and everything falls apart because of it.

We remedied things last year, so let's hope we can do it this year, albeit a lot earlier in the season.

I only really noticed one occasion where we picked him out when we had a better option. Forget who it was but Cunningham was free inside the arc and we went to the boundary to find Buddy when we should have picked out Harry. Thought we bombed kicks more around the ground than necessarily in our I50s.

Dunno if anyone has said it yet but the last time we conceded over 130 points apart from last years grand final was round 20, 2008. Little bit concerning.

Yeah my concern is the way we collapsed. Last year we fought back and made games respectable.

Anyone who thinks we are a realistic chance at a premiership is kidding themselves. We were found out today just like in GF and again let down by poor coaching.

How we were not primed for today, after 2 soft kills, is nothing short of poor preparation but the coach, and not for the first time.

I fear the horse era will be looked back on as "good coach, got one early but was never really able to prepare a side for the meaningful games".

To be fair, this year we don't have the Express Pass that allows you to go straight through to the GF without playing any meaningful games like we had last year.

Broke our back in the last. 11 goals is insane, pretty much only them and Collingwood could do that much damage in a last quarter.

Even when we got thumped in the grandfinal they never kick more than 6 in a quarter. 11 blows the game out of proportion.

We can't defend the quick ball.
We rely on the midfielders to get back & help & they were off today. Too slow getting back.

Big games hurt us.

After witnessing the Port autopsy thread, I’ve come to appreciate what a measured, philosophical bunch we are in responding to loss.
The “sack Hinkley” threads (they’re up to v7 now) should be printed, bound and tomed, and retained in a museum. They’re magnificent

What are you saying - that 9 out of every 10 posts stating "I'm not watching next week unless we sack Hinkley" is not measured and philosophical?

Yeah, it's razor blades at ten paces over there.

We were 6 points down with 5 more scoring shots in the third.
If we were as accurate as Melbourne we would of built up a 20 point lead.
Was definitely not over.

Yeah, it certainly seemed that way. At least on the scoreboard.

But I have to disagree slightly. It just felt, to me at least, like we had to hit the front to break some type of psychological barrier. Unfortunately we just couldn't get it done.

Hayward had a poor game throughout but his first quarter was something special. Think he was so poor it encouraged a kick it long mentality. No-one who plays footy is weak, however some are not mentally tough. Will is one.s

Gulden composure and skills
TMac and Ollie both had good games

Stayed in it until late 3q

All show, no go from Heeney, Hayward, Blakey, Campbell, Warner, Rowy, PMac
Mids are not good enough
Matchday coaching
Amartey cannot kick
Club has no interest in quality ruckmen
Only Sheldrick ready to replace Harry or Rowy
