I still wouldn’t be going with both Hately and Valente, them plus Mrouch is one too many slow mids

Replace Hately with RCD and that midfield is superb if developed well

If we are replacing one of those, definitely replace Valente and sacrifice RCD for Hately. I have been accused of under-rating Hately. I completely reject that. I rate him highly, but I'd just prefer to take a punt on RCD. But I will 100% own up to not rating Valente highly at all. His lack of acceleration and agility will just eat him up at AFL level.

Plenty of mids have similar traits to Valente and have had some very good careers. His footskills make up for it.

We all want to bottom out on here until we do !

And the same people who wanted us to bottom out would still be complaining about how shit we were...

THen again some people wouldn't be satisfied with a premiership...

Very happy to take Valente at 21 but not earlier

IMO Butters is a smarter footballer (which is saying something because I think Gallucci’s smarts are underrated here). Also more evasive and a better kick

Less overall athleticism though
This time of year cracks me up. Everyone getting a hard on for some kids kicking when he's running around playing TAC U18's.

I've seen Jordy lacing out JJ, at full tilt, under pressure v Sydney at the SCG in the last quarter when the game was in the balance.

When I see Master Butters executing the skill that cleanly, under that pressure, at such a big time of an AFL match against serious opposition - I'll compare his kicking to Gallucci's.

Sam Mitchell says hi

It depends on how far 21 slides to. I think there will be players with considerably more upside still on the table at that pick. If Valente was best available at that 4th pick I would be desperately hoping to trade it for a 2019 first rather than take him.

He’d be hard to fit into the same midfield as Sloane/Mrouch/Gibbs/Greenwood though. Maybe when he moves into the midfield full time around 2021/22, Gibbs and Sloane start to transition to half back/half forward, Gibbs even a wing?

You’re right in that his kicking efficiency is unbelievable for his position, something none of our mids truly have

Hard to pin point a comparison, he won’t be as good as Sam Mitchell but he’s that style of player
In saying that, no one would have thought Mitchell would be as good as he was when he went at pick 50 or so.

Very few slow inside mids make waves, but when they work out they are very handy players (Priddis, Mitchell, Thompson, Kennedy, Crouch etc). It isn't neccesarily draft pick reflective when it comes to them, as the priority is on speed, particularly the last few years.

You really need to see Butters more Pete, his TAC Cup/Championship kicking and footy smarts levels are a class above Gallucci at that level so why is it unreasonable not to expect it will translate to AFL footy

Mitchell went 32 in the best draft of all time

He wasn’t that lowly a pick

I’m comparing him to when Gallucci was at U18 level, no need to be smart

In our environment he could end up better or worse, but I’m confident we’d get the best out of him

Is there a comparative player you can think of Bicks?

That’s also an inappropriate use of the word patently

Scorpus has done plenty of work on this, even if you natural bias wants to believe otherwise

You can get a superstar at pick 8, but your chances at pick 1 or 2 are much higher (3 not so much)

Could be that the deals GC came back to Poot are be a bit better than what Crows have offered to GC (if there is such an offer) - ie GC are taking Crows' offer unless Poot can offer even more, which could be more than Poo are willing to cough up.

Yes, those Port comments have me puzzled.

Do they just want their supporters to know they've tried and got nowhere?

Or could it be that GC and AFC already had a deal so the negotiations with Port were essentially for the other pick? That would explain why their trade suggestions for that pick would be way overs.

Or if an AFC deal was in place, do Port want to get it out there now as public knowledge so when they place their bid on the night and AFC's lesser bid is accepted they can throw their dummies out the war room and shout "draft tampering"?

Of course.

The bit about not getting a star at 8 was made up to bolster his point, no one actually said that - or even implied it

Just that if you want a superstar you need to be higher up in the draft. Exceptions that prove the rule notwithstanding

Like I said - when I see him execute under the spotlight of high pressure AFL, and he does it better than Jordy, I'll happily concede. Not before.

Don't think that's unreasonable.
