Drugs in Sport - Surely not us?

"Bulking up" is far from the only warning sign. Lance Armstrong was hardly a muscle freak. This runs far beyond getting on the 'roids ... and one of the good things about this is that maybe the sanctimonious Australian sports media will get off its high horse in future.

Spot on DG, bulking up isn't everything.. for one being able to play the game very well will beat pure size every time, I think what you are suggesting is the stamina ones that will give more of an advantage to the way our game is played these days. I remember the super fit brownlow medalist Aker suggesting years ago that his West Coast opponent must have been on something because he had him well covered the previous time they played but this time he just kept running and running off him all the time, super human like. I think it was EPO. As much as most don't like the loud mouth it doesn't automatically make his educated observations wrong.. However he did retract the statement for legal reasons.. That was 10yrs ago, in modern science terms.. that was ancient times imagine how far its improved and how much harder to detect.

Ill give a little on my experience with certain 'supplements'. I use them but I don't play a professional sport but I like to keep fit, I still train pretty hard for an old fella. Importing laws from overseas can be very strict in Aus but are a little more lenient in NZ. Then importing from NZ to Aus is even easier.. Certain banned substances are readily available if you know what youre doing. With banned 'products' all they do is change one ingredient to one with similar effects not on the banned list and off you go again, by the time the legislation process goes through to ban that product, one ingredient is changed again, re branded and it just keeps rolling.
I guess you could call it cutting edge stuff.

Forget Akermanis, our very own Dale Lewis was roundly condemned, particularly by the Victorian AFL media, when he came out not long after he retired and said the sport was rife with drugs ... can't remember the specifics, whether he was referring to social drugs or PEDs, and I think he made some estimate ("75 per cent"???) ... I'd be very interested in whether anyone running these now very extensive investigations thinks to call Lewis and ask him to elaborate.

You can say it here too, as long as you make it clear it is just your opinion and you aren't claiming it as indisputable fact.

Really? So if I named the people I personally thought could potentially be on drugs at the Swans I can't be in any trouble?

just word it carefully or use it in a joke, of all the shit you read on the interweb Id doubt anyone would bother with it

I wouldn't be doing any naming because before you know it the media will pick up on it and it'll be a new story.

I think this is so serious that idle naming of players is potentially very damaging to people who are probably innocent.

I'm hoping like hell that no one at Adelaide is guilty just the same as you guys are hoping everyone at the Swans is clean.

I'd hate to be an Essendon supporter right now because I reckon something big is going to break there, I hope it doesn't but the ashen faces of Hird and co at the presser indicates they think they are cooked.

Yeah understandable, I'm just trying to think it all through so if some sort of Swans-related news broke I wouldn't be too shocked.

I had a friend who did training up to Olympic coaching level. We used to train together sometimes. Both of us have poor genes for muscle gain and left it too late in life. He used some steroids and the results were noticeable. It was obvious with most that were using them at our gym.

When I saw Essendon at the beginning of last year it was noticeable how much weight many of them had put on. I have noticed it with the odd Swan. However you are talking about guys at the right age for rapid muscle gain and many are going to have the right genes. So although I'm pretty sure there's been some cheating going on, it could be good genes, youth, right training regime and right diet.

I still can't understand how they do rapid muscle gain while increasing aerobic capacity because my understanding was that the two don't go together (you have to cut back on aerobic training to put on muscle?)

If you name names you either use a source or strong material logic. No circumstantial "facts" either thanks.

Quoting a source is not a defence.

Under the Defamation act (2005) the defence of honest opinion, in this instance, would require 3 things;

(1) It is a defence to the publication of defamatory matter if the defendant proves that:
(a) the matter was an expression of opinion of the defendant rather than a statement of fact, and
(b) the opinion related to a matter of public interest, and
(c) the opinion is based on proper material (which in this case would be if it is based on material that is substantially true)

Delightful, thats for the person to decide what source is worthy of backing up there statement. I'm not turning this into a legal thread I'm just stating that if someone posts direct names of people they believe to be drug cheats on the Swans board they better have more evidence than Jason Akermanis did.

No what you are doing is posting incorrect information "If you name names you either use a source.." when SM specifically asked for advice from a mod.
It's better with the caveat mentioned but that was missing from your initial post.

I'd be pretty disappointed if the swans as a club were implicated. I take great pride in our club maintaining a clean image, an issue like this would taint our proud club, and more importantly would taint our premiership.

I'm pretty confident we wouldnt have any systematic use of ped's within the club.

Wouldnt surprise me if Luke Parker was on the juice. He was a tank when he joined the swans (obvious Joke).

I was giving BF advice as to what post would be acceptable circumstance to name names here Scott... If he wants to talk about what would protect him legally, he speaks to you.

If I had to live in Adelaide Id take drugs.. just sayin
Actually, it's a great place to live, and affordable.

I do however get really pissed off with the amazingly one eyed and narrow view of the majority of my fellow Crows supporters. They know so little about clubs other than Adelaide that it's embarassing. The media here doesn't help either, they are similar to most Crows supporters. I watch every game every year so actually get a broader understanding of the whole comp and i makes for a more pleasant experience.
