Harley hype will mean he gets the nod ahead of Dempsey?
I’m pretty confident Dempsey will get it, although the round isn’t over yet.

Dempsey was either BOG or next best for mine.

Probably lock him in for 2 or 3 Brownlow votes.

Really had a big impact in the win and was flashy + got the TV interview.

Someone will need a real blinder to top him imo.

Maybe but clark is a one position player and im not convinced of the merits of those sort of guys being sub. Your tuohy moc bowes mannagh types are better as subs as they can play multiple roles depending on how you want to change it up.
When you have an abundance of players in the 22 who can play mid and elsewhere, as we do, it doesn’t matter putting a mid as sub.

Clark has the same problem bruhn had last year he just needs to build his tank and get more afl games to get him up to speed quicker. His contest work adds what we need and dont have. Id manage his minutes where needed but i wouldnt drop him. He will be very good in 12 months (like bruhn is now) if we get the games into him.
He has hardly played any senior footy. Even VFL games will be beneficial to him at this stage.

Last night was why I'm not a fan of these shortened pre-seasons we get now. You get two sides, full of rust and lacking in match fitness serve up an often unwatchable and frustrating contest.

It's also why I'm not prepared to get too carried away with regards to writing players off or making bold predictions for the remainder of the season, not until at least six weeks in can we truly gauge just how the season might unfold.

What I did take away though is that Ross Lyon football is still a blight on the game, our young players showed signs that they may make this side theirs, and possibly earlier than expected and that PFD is still a bloody star, even at 34.

Should have won by more, but many positives and plenty to work on, which you is what you expect after Round 1.

Correct.

He (Clark) probably has never dominated a senior game in his life.

I don’t think him sliding back into the VFL to go up against weaker opposition and having a blinder or two would hurt.

I’m not a fan of playing kids as sub.

Hawkins seemed to be limping, right leg IIRC + appeared stiff.
May need some time to recover, but I reckon he’d play with two broken legs 😉
He’s an enormous influence, was encouraging his forwards enthusiastically + praised goal kickers proudly. They all adore him.
I think he’s going ok if he doesn’t have to change direction, or bend down, or leap off the ground, or run fast. I still love him and want him in the team though!

Clark with his first MRO incident in just his second game - a fine for a rough tackle on Jack Steele in the second quarter

Hope this doesn't have him second guessing his approach & physicality shown

Is Dempsey eligible for Rising Star still?
If so... Surely he gets the Round 1 nomination
Wasn't a buy with Dempsey. But he played well and showed confidence. Good mark for his size. These comments already mentioned. Young emerging player, fell over a couple of times. Stay on your feet !!! Also a few more kilos would make him able to stay in a contest. Willing to tackle. Early doors. Clark mmmm seems small. Cant see in him as a top 10 draft pick with the sample presented so far. But very young. With more games, add kilos as well, he could make it. As for Mannagh. Glimpses of a experienced player with footy IQ. Strong core. Did a couple of nice blocks. Im excited.

Ok…so when Harley had 8 touches in the first qtr I thought maybe the Number 1 pick hype might just flow through to him getting round 1 nomination (there has always been a bias in early rounds to high draft picks)…

But he has 15 with 2m to go including 9 handballs and only 237 metres gained. Playing mostly as mid. Surely that isn’t enough? Although the commentators are talking him up - so who knows…

9 contested isn't bad for a debut

So Clark gets a fine for a tackle that was barely even a free, let alone one that warrants a punishment from the MRO. Just laughable.

Good to see some things still haven't changed. And that goes too for the bog average umpiring we were subjected too last night.

Tactically Frustrated

During pre-season we were told:
Training was shorter but with greater intensity and endurance.
More focus on sprint running. Player has slimed down... etc
New trainers were introducing new techniques, sharpening skills

Went to the game expecting to see an improved game style
Maybe a new faster slicker Cats run and carry game
Hopefully low precisions passing while running full tilt
Perhaps a swift rehearsed orchestrated drill ball transition
Presumably a 15m burst into space then long direct pass
Imaginably players waiting in advance for quick clearance
Possibly some screens or blocks to free-up forwards
Perchance lightning leads to predetermined positions

What did I witness?...
Max Homes ran and bounced the ball a few times.
Danger sprinted and sprayed his kicks
Stewart closed on the contest like lightning
Noticeably nothing new we hadn't see before

However I did see St. Kilda do all of the above
They sped through the corridor in numbers
Created chains of overlapping loose player
Had players waiting in position for long kicks.
I also saw the same from Swans, Lions, and others

Predictable styles can be planned against and shut down
While Cats are -haphazard- ..err.. unpredictable
We make it difficult for other teams... and ourselves
Kittens need structure, Should we be concerned?

Do the crime do the time. At least they didn't nab Gryan for the shoey.

If it was the tackle I thought it was the Saints player milked it by putting his own head on the ground to play for the free. The one cited was Steele but haven't seen a stager as bad as that Windhager guy for a while so might have wires crossed.

We need to see a few more games to determine how the side is gelling, and what the game plan really looks like in the longer term.
