Well, that's torn it. Lachlan has singlehandedly destroyed our latest dynasty before it even began.

Just as well he didn't hear about the rort we have going at the local library. I believe members of the leadership group (and their families!) are allowed to borrow two additional items from the city library each week. And any overdue fees have been waived for the past five years running...

While I love it, Haynes is apparently cooked - and only a club looking to shortcut their way to success like St Kilda seem to be, is crazy enough to take that salary with a 30 year old player, whose body is not what it used to be.

Haynes has reportedly got 2 years to run on a heavily back ended contract of $1m per annum. It's basically why they've floated him to other clubs but no one prepared to pick up the salary.

GWS are in a serious amount of pain as far as their cap is concerned. You can see why when you get a look at some of these contracts floating around. Toby Greene's name also came up between a couple of player managers and they were shocked at the salary component they'd have to pick up. Ended up being a pretty short discussion. Same issues apply to Whitfield I suspect and why he's been floated, but unlikely there'll be takers.

Gotta love the Cats model. Apart from a flag this year, and the fact we're a destination club, it must drive other clubs and their list managers nuts at how we attract good players for "unders". I think most clubs are just realising that apart from on field success in 2022, Geelong have set themselves up for a sustained run of success largely based around the cunning and strategic list build. As a club staffer from elsewhere told me recently ....... "it's taken the club and the rest of the competition a while to wake up to what Geelong are doing ....... and it's gonna take a few years before we even get close to catching up ......... if the next 5 years is like a 5km race, then Geelong already have a 1-2km head start". Comments were being made in relation to list management and not placing such a priority on early draft picks. Chris Scott articulated it 3-4 years ago, but nobody really clicked with what he was saying.

I'd be convinced I've died and gone to heaven if that happens. After living through and watching Geelong fall at the final hurdle and seemingly cursed so often from 1980-1995 this just can't be happening!!

That's only part of it I reckon - the way we manage players really came to the fore this year. We have been slowly testing the waters with that sort of thing over the last few, but went all in and we all witnessed what happened there.

I think it will take other teams a while to bed that in (to ensure they are fresh at the pointy end) ... but that ultimately means you need depth and that feeds directly into what you've quoted above. If they want to rest their top players from time to time, they need depth to cover or else they cannot rest them as they are a greater chance to lose a game and not be up the pointy end.

It's glorious in it's simplicity and even more glorious in that pretty much most other teams (if not all) are no where near being able to do the same thing as yet.

with the Suns adamant the they want a second-rounder from the Cats to trade the No.7 pick as part of the overall package.

The Cats believe they can retain pick 7 to head to the draft table, and use picks including 18 and 38 to secure deals for Collingwood’s Ollie Henry and GWS mid Tanner Bruhn.

But, as reported by the Herald Sun on Sunday, a key part of the Suns’ trade demands will be to accept a future second-rounder back as part of the Bowes deal.

If the Cats are not prepared to hand back a future selection the Suns will be happy to trade Bowes – and his $1.8 million salary – but not the cherished No.7 pick.

With Ratagolea seemingly leaving it seems possible we could secure Bowes, Bruhn and Henry for 18, 38 and whatever we received back for Ratagolea without using our F1. Clearly upgrading our host of other picks will also occur to facilitate it as well.
