Review Good, Bad, Keeping shape, keeping shat - Crows V Bombers

it was good to see Rankine, Rachele and Soligo in the guts , Rankine wasnt at his best, but as a mid he is clearly getting better.
Rankine can thank Brad Scott for that. Scott sent a bloke out to smother Rankine, who had (I think) 2 disposals to half-time.
Attention Matthew Nicks, Coaching FAIL: no tag on Merrett ==> best-on-ground.

Good:
  • The finals flame has been extinguished, so we are not subject to having a little bit of hope, only to be disappointed. Now we can just embrace the disappointment.
  • Soligo

Bad:
  • Nicks will keep trying to prioritise wins over development. He can't even do that properly though.
  • No succession plan for O'Brien (it's not like he's Max Gawn quality...someone should be coming through and tipping him out, but there is no one. No young developing ruck)
  • Brodie Smith
  • Giving up a string of goals to hand Ess back the lead, after we had been DOMINANT.
  • Poor coaching as usual

Need to hit the draft hard next 2 years before Tassie come in. Forget Petty for god's sake

He worked his way back in the 2nd half and finished with 12 disposals, 271m gain at 81% TOG, 6 tackles and kicked an important goal.

Yeah we played bad and possibly didn't deserve to win.

But neither did Essendon.

That game was two teams around the same mark. Both crap.
Made it a tight game. And an absolute howler of a non decision at the end the difference.

Having said all that, Brad Scott outclassed Nicks. Scott saw last week with Carlton allowing us space, we play on our terms.

He took that away from us.

Scott effectively took Rankine out of the midfield.

You've seen our kick in? That's why they got repeated inside 50s and shots on goal lol.

That’s what also didnt help when we had momentum, that stupid kick ins that they marked uncontested. We did this 4 or 5 times in a row, what an absolute joke. Yet they walked out from our behind without being touched. Our overall skills are atrocious and I can’t understand what the hell we did in 3 months of pre season

Borlase is just “fine” for what he is.

If he’s the guy you call upon when you’re missing 2 1st choice key defenders you can live with that.

Can’t see him ever been more than that but he serves a purpose in a depth chart and he’s perfectly servicable for that (if he was the 1st back up, as he kind of is for now but only as Murray is LTI then he’d be a weakness)
Borland
Thought he did really well in a few contests tonight - another yard of pace and he would be more than handy.

14 possessions at 93% DE.
Borlase also has only 2 goals (I think) scored on him in the 3 games he has played.

And watch us still try and win every game to improve our ladder position while killing our draft position

This is when you need an astute football manager not a paper shuffler

The best part of that game was Sog.

He was tagged heavily. And rose the occasion. At 21 to produce that output with the attention he received is superb.

We might have a genuine elite mid here.

Who was the last AFL Premier to build primarily through drafting?

With the draft heavily compromised it doesn't work any more.

Look at Collingwood approach.

Richmond built their dynasty through trades as well.

Port going down this track.

How is it 2024 and we still have a lumbering spud ruckman on good money. Unless the ball is kicked straight to his hands he cant compete at contests, his marking form is s**t too why’re his arms so stiff and extended like 10 seconds before the balls reaches his hands. We’d be better off with 2 athletic types with 10 games between them, because teams are figuring out they can work him over.
He has the coordination of a baby giraffe. Baffled how this guy has been #1 ruck for so long with no attempt to recruit a replacement.

It’s not like there have been no options - there is a ruck merry go round every off season we could just jump on.

Played shit and somehow still had half a chance at the end of the game.

Pretty much sums up the year so far very much an almost team but should be a lot better.

Good to see a centre bounce of Sol, Ranks and Rach in the last qtr and not going to a stock standard Laird Dawson Keays (Crouch if he was playing).

Fog has been unsighted most of the year.

Cook looked meh. Hamil looked lost or devoid of any confidence.

Dawson and Soligo were massive.

Smith needs to be done just bite the ****ing bullet and rip the band aid off.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see us lose to North next week.

Was at the game last night. Frustrating as all hell.

Essendon were the far better team but wasted chances. Their spread and numbers around the ball were elite. They just knew that they always had an outlet handball in a better position and they executed the handball every time. We on the other hand regularly waited 2 seconds too long to get rid of it, handballed one too many times and/or constantly handballed to players in a worse position and burned players that were open.

Amazing too how 20 seconds after the centre bounce there can be a genuine raffle of Essendon players all on their own 15m out from goal. How does that even happen?

For most of the night it was like watching two different games. We somehow stayed in it despite not being able to take a mark inside 50 and just being generally incompetent in most things requiring skill, while they played Formula 1 football and looked like the Harlem Globetrotters but just couldn't finish.

This could also be confirmation bias, but surely we're the worst in the league for those holding the balls where you get spun around at least once, then eventually dragged down without so much as even an attempt to get rid of it. We seem to always think there's no need to get rid of it while being tackled because the tackle will probably slip, which it never does so I don't know what gave them that impression.

Laird putrid.
Gollant and Cook non entities.
Fogarty constantly burnt by shithouse delivery.
McHenry and Sholl delivered exactly what they always do.
ROB is as effective as a post. Can't clunk a contested mark to save his life.

We were in with a chance because Essendon are not very good at all. It was the most winnable match based on quality of opponent and location in our first 10

Can’t believe you lot. Rightful free kick paid, this whole thread would be on a different level, extolling the praise of the team.
Instead, we’re moping in the doldrums, demanding sackings, firings, throw out the bath water etc.
Yeah we could have played better. We still should’ve won though. We were robbed blind. Get hot under the collar about that.
Good teams find a way to win. We found a way to.
Numbers weren’t in our favour. Doesn’t matter. Should. Have. Won.
Umps f*ckd us. There’s history here.

Sure, umpires make mistakes, they're human, but if you can't see that our players disposal was terrible for the majority, if not all of the night, then that is on you. It's easy to blame the umps, but you really need to look at our players/coaching staff where the blame of the loss lays.

How many times did we kick it over our players heads, even on 20m kicks. We had numerous spoils in defence that went towards their goals that cost us goals. We had zero intensity for the first quarter, luckily they kicked inaccurately. Our kicking inside 50 has been deplorable all season. None of this is on the umps.

62 inside 50s to 43, that tells you the absolute dominance Ess had in general play. I think Nicks said we were -15 in loose ball gets in the first quarter alone. That's down to work rate, again, not on the umps.

I know it's cool and edgy to be the guy who says the umpires didn't cost us, we cost us but just to remind everyone it's possible to be angry at both how s**t we are AND how s**t the umpires are.

They didn't fail to pay that free because we are a s**t side, they failed to pay it because they have no balls and are incompetent. Kinda like our coach but also a separate issue. If we had been a great side and played well and lost off the back of that decision we would be ropeable so it's okay to be ropable.

This 100%.

It’s possible to hold two thoughts at the same time. Yes, we were outplayed and out coached and shouldn’t have been in the contest at the end; and yes, we were absolutely robbed by a disgraceful umpiring decision.

The precise reason that diving on the ball became a rule was to stop defenders killing the clock in that situation. If you aren’t going to pay that, the rule should be changed.

On another front, that late play by Hinge in the eastern forward pocket was our season to date in a nutshell. No plan, executed with no awareness, incredibly low percentage kick, no intent or intensity. Gets run down and puts it out on the full.

They drafted their core -Butters, Rozee - draft. JHF trade ( which was always happening given his background)

,Daicos , Daicos , De Goey - Crisp as a 3 year gamble

Richmond - Dusty at 4 , Cotchin at 2,

Drafted their core traded their outer

We still need 1 more elite midfielder for Laird, Crouch cover

He is growing with confidence every week. We have found a gem with this one.

Absolutely farcical at the end. How they don't pay that as holding the ball is mind boggling. Draper reenacting the dive on the ball after the siren adds a little more salt on the wound but is good for the AFL and umpires to see.

As for the footy, I've been a Brodie smith supporter for his whole career pretty much, but he has to be dropped. His form is so bad and so is his confidence. I don't know why we are giving him kick in duties when he has been playing so badly and can't make a good decision.

But who do you replace smith with?

ROB couldn't take a mark to save his life last night. Half the time he didn't even try and just tried tapping it to the ground. He's gotta be better than that, and in fairness he has been better than that.

Rachelle was weak as piss. Dropping his head twice, murdering the ball all in the last quarter. And not giving the handball over the top that needs to be given 100/100 times. Shocker night from him. Soligo is looking like the better 6 year signing more and more every week imo.

Depressing result overall. Probably a season killer. Nick's should be under pressure. Hopefully the Bulldogs fire Beveridge and we might get to have a crack at getting him. Our club always needs a bit of a tough taskmaster imo and he would fit that bill.

I'm hanging out for the "Coach Nicks has the Board's full confidence" statement, coming soon to a Presser near you.

I wish.
I have about the same confidence in the players at the moment. Play a patch then go missing. Chuck in a show pony softie, a couple of slowies with a shallow list and ya ****ed

New club theme song:

We’re the joke of South Australia, we’re the sloppy Adelaide Fumblers,
Some of us squib in marking contests, others pad their stat numbers,
Spud shape keepers, brick handed ruckman, our selection couldn’t be dumber,
We’re the joke of South Australia, we’re the sloppy Adelaide Fumblers.
