Review Good, bad, the gallant shat loss - R4 vs Melbourne 2024

Good: Soligo was exceptional, and Dawson was better than the last few games. Nankervis was decent. Berry wasn't terrible as the sub. There was some good forward 50 entries, more so than the Fremantle game. I think we were a little better at stoppages in regards to getting the ball to the right users. Both of these were the best they've been this season (though that doesn't really say much).

Bad: The vast majority of forward 50 entries were still dreadful. There was loads of mindless ball-bombing, especially down the wings. We continue to allow opposition sides to corridor clog against us, and when we inevitably turn the ball over, it's incredibly easy to score against us. These two factors are costing us every game, and that will continue to happen unless something changes.

Shat: Continual skill errors, multiple players were pretty dreadful. Michalanney had probably his worst game so far, Keays and McHenry were awful, Hinge didn't seem to contribute much. O'Brien was dreadful again.

If I was tex walker I would be telling the young Josh who got in his way in the last 4 minutes you do it again I will run through you.

Absolutely killed your momentum there
Some posters call him soft with his effort, he jump across not knowing what was behind him. Walker should have called him it was his mark.

Nicks said our system was right (for the first time this season), but our execution was bad

Blamed player form again
Which is his fault either way.

Either get them back into form (which Fagan, as a coach, views as his job), or don't select out of form players in the first place.

Any danger we could also play a lose man instead of an extra one up at the stoppage
Couldn’t agree more…defence would love the help and gives us a chance to try and score from a turnover instead of Laird, Crouch and O’brien fumbling it around at the stoppage

That was actually 75% better than our first 3 games in terms of skill and ball movement. We might actually beat someone playing like that. Still lacked composure going forward and in front of goal.

Melbourne are probably the best side we've come up against so far imo. Polished and strong defensively.

Much better, but our season is shot so let's **** off some dead wood and try some newer players!

Good:

Soligo. He's looking really good.

Keane. Gonna be a general. Can't wait to have Murray back with Keane.

Nankervis was composed under serious pressure. Crazy we didn't go with him round 1.

Liked Berry when he came on. Actually made some play.

Average :

Dawson. Better, but still not at his best.
Crouch okay
Laird good and bad moments. Out of form. That handball to O'Brien was terrible. Thought he was better than most are making out.

Worrell and Butts held up fairly well.

Bad :

Not liking Rachele's start to the year. Lacking class and not getting involved enough. Can blame development, but he's not showing his skills either.

O'Brien not having any impact. Needs to clunk a few marks

Michalaney finally has an average game when the rest of the team picks it up. Would have been nice if he continued his great form. Has been our best up until this week.

Jones just doesn't do enough and isn't getting any better.

Think our player development is really below par compared to other teams. That's going to hold us back from every challenging regardless of who our head coach is.

Rory Laird is the most average 3x BnF winner of all time. Every time he was out of the midfield we were far more dynamic. He is playing the exact same as Crouch was when he got demoted to the SANFL for a year. However Lairdy and Nicks are mates from Scotch days and he is all about backing in the boys so we won’t see him out of the midfield for years.

In defence of Crouch, I think we need a player like that in the midfield, gets his hands on the ball first and usually uses it well. Keep.
I have no issue with crouch leading the 2nd midfield group of we can surround him with pacey skillful players.

He shouldn't be starting alongside Dawson though.

Although Dawson isn't as useless in defence, you are effectively giving up 2 players defensively on turnovers and you just can't have that.

I'd probably prefer we invested games in Dowling though.

I was surprised he wasn't getting more of the ball after his hot start until I realised he wasn't actually on the ground

Isn’t player development part of the head coach’s role?

Did you like Caleb Windsor on the wing for Melbourne? That’s player development.

Did you like seeing kosi Pickett in centre bounces? That’s player development.

How about an afc coach back the kids in for once

It's a shame, because I quite liked him when he was actually given a chance on the ground. Made a couple of mistakes, but was mostly tidy and composed, more so than most of our players.

Think Jones should go back to the back pocket

Milera gone, Parnell doesn't look up to it to me.

Jones isn't a polished outside player. Doesn't give us any shape or width. Not a natural wingman.

He is quick, he is tough, crashes in. We need a small defender who can play on guys like Pickett. Single minded, determined, disciplined.

Played him in two distinct roles too, wing and forward.
Looked alright in the first half, but lost in the last.
He was one out a couple of times in the last qtr but they didn’t go long to him.

Really?

Let's go "A" grader then, does anyone actually think he's an "A" grade midfielder.
He peaked as a B grade midfielder. Was never in any serious contention for any non club award in the midfield.

His current form is below standard, so D grade
