Review Good/Bad v Brisbane, Round 9

I doubt Greenwood has the conditioning to do more than pinch hit as the alternate alternate rotation in the midfield at the moment, but he looks like he could be of serious use once he does - though again, Brisbane pressure wasn't great in the second half.
That was almost positive...well done :)

Hoping with Hampton out that Wigg comes in.
Good percentage booster, impressive games from the debutants.
Still not sold on Brouch

Brouch was much, much better. He was even running freely and kicking with penetration in open space, in vast contrast to last week.

Something I learnt actually: a pessimistic fan base is willing to write off good early season form because "it's only April/May". But losses can potentially mean you're out of the premiership race.

Fascinating. Obviously there's work to do, few would deny that.

It's not a pessimistic fan base. It's just numptys on here.

Most people thought the big wins were good but not everything, and the losses were frustrating but probably inevitable to happen at some stage.

It's an insane season. There are no premiership favorites at the moment.

Greenwood

Charlies amazing quarter

Brads goal outside 50 all got me going.

We don't have to be at our best right now we just have to rack up the wins and fire in September. Brad needs to step up and take the pressure off Rory. He is good enough and started to run with the ball in the second half.

Otten and Hartigan were poor. Otten especially i would be bringing Jenkins straight back in for him. We get scored against too easily for a top side need to tighten up somewhere.

Good was Greenwood's first half exceeding expectations, CC after the main break. Defence was misely, Sloane slowly getting the hang of taggers, Betts snapping out of it, Atkins even though had a clangerfest seemed to get over his stage fright.

Bad - how brought down to form some of the playing group actually are, all evidenced in the first quarter. Last two weeks have shattered everyone, players must read BigFooty. Crouches are stock starting mids - can't do much about it with current list, must keep rotating the young talent around them.

If we keep winning, we stay on top, we have fundamental problems, but which team doesn't, f... the arrogance coming over from the east of us. Many wins to be had before and after the bye, I hope this is the form regression we had to have, clean it up against Freo and back on to the mission.

I thought Hartigan was good this week. He was pretty sound and didn't produce any howlers. Lever was similar.

It's amazing that anyone could champion an utterly inane analysis, particularly in hindsight.

Noone who had any sense would have thought what happened against melbourne and north melbourne were 'inevitable'. They were both particularly rate achievements in inepitude. 64-0 quarters arent inevitable.

So absolutely disingenuous it brings shame on you to provide it as fare.

Very impressed with Greenwood, definitely have a player there. Gallucci had some nice moments too, didn't set the world on fire but definitely held his own. Hopefully he stays in the team for a few weeks to get his confidence up. Will be a solid player for us in the years to come.

Maybe im normally a big fan. Just the fumbling early bothered me. Wasn't only him however.

Yeah. The fumbling was general, even Laird. The commentators and players made a point of mentioning the dewy and slippery conditions, so that must have been a big factor. At one point I was amazed when Hampton fell over embarrassingly when he was by himself. Poor old Dougie got the ball a lot, but slipped and fumbled just about every time: he seems abnormally sensitive to slippery conditions.

Part of the problem was a number of players firing dry weather handpasses at players, giving them very little help in reeling the ball in - Atkins and Brad in particular were guilty of this over and over again.

Better than last week isn't hard, still coming up to fitness hence am not sold yet. See what happens with more difficult opponents with Freo and Geelong in the next two.

He is close to the fittest player on our list.

If you know nothing then don't bother to comment.

The good:

We're not creaming our pants at an 80 point win over a bottom team, unlike some supporters that we know would do.

Greenwood goes alright too. Not just the goals but his tackling. He likes to get his hands dirty and we need more of it. He stays in, hopefully for the rest of the year.

The bad:

I can't help but be unsatisfied with that performance. Unable to match intensity early, need to be stronger over the ball, fumbling at the first sight of pressure and overuse of handball when our hands are not clean enough.

We need a better balance between defence and attack. I don't like the fact that we tend to bleed goals on a regular basis.

What we are badly missing up forward is Gov. His contested marking and pressure in fwd half is greatly missed. Combined with Knight's pressure and running power will greatly improve our forward line when both back. Walkers form is of concern, no confidence currently. I also feel Cheney and Doedee need to come into our back half for Kelly and Otten if he is playing back. We are being scored against too easily, need to tighten up quickly. Greenwood is a huge positive. Reilly O'Brien might also need some minutes soon as Jacobs is tiring.

Good to not lose the game at selection. Please please please take note of this, AFC. Do not bring back Mackay, as tempted as you may be, and nicely as he may ask. CERTAINLY not without at least one or ideally two to three games in the seconds.

The Mighty Thor stole the show with three goals in the first half to open the game up for us and also laid nine tackles. It took him one game to equal Mackay's PB for goals in his 171 game career. Don't really care for the back of the neck tats, but willing to ignore it if he can become the big-bodied goalkicking enforcer midfielder we've been screaming out for. Showed every indication that he will with his debut tonight.

Gallucci showed promising signs without being exceptional. Good hard running to get the goal even if the sting had gone out of the game by then. IMO we should back him in for at least the next couple of weeks since the midfield cupboard is bare at the moment.

Good to get back on the winners list. Brisbane obviously aren't a powerhouse, but hopefully we can get our mojo back now with a bit of morale back. Test now is to continue against Freo, who will be a good test given their dour defensive strategy we have struggled against the last few weeks.

The big concern from this game is the first quarter. Pretty much every team in the league will slaughter us playing like that. We were fortunate that Brisbane kicked badly and are still too inexperienced to go with us for a whole game. Also concerning is that our midfield depth is paper thin if that. Atkins and Douglas seemed to be in competition for Worst on Ground honours particularly in the first half. Ideally I'd drop one of them, but, coupled with the possible Hampton injury (he's another that's been poor lately) we have just about nobody to replace them (we're down to about Wigg, Poholke and Gore with a combined zero games experience), unless we pull something unexpected out of the hat like playing somebody like Cheney in the middle, or of course if we want to go down the Thompson path, and I certainly don't want to do that.

Was that the worst 80 point win in Crow's history?

We looked terrible for large parts of the match. The big win was adding 2 more players to our list of players capable of playing AFL. We need to give Beech, Wigg and Doedee a chance over the next 6 matches.

We need to improve 40% to win the flag but so do GWS, Eagles, Cats, Bulldogs and the Pear.

I'm telling you, we're a chance!!!!

Care to explain then why the 'fittest player on our list' had the lowest game time of anyone bar the injured Hampton, and spent much of that time forward? Or would you like to sit in the back and chew on your foot in privacy?

There is and always has been a difference between training ground fit, and AFL midfield matchday fit. I'm pretty sure he'll get there eventually, but not yet.

The Good:
Greenwood
Sloane
Cameron

The Bad:
How 2 brothers can get a lot of disposal and the feeling is meh
Hamptons injury
1st quarters

The Ugly:
15 metres
Father Time nipping at a few players heels
Did we watch the same game?
Don't think there was a Crows player on the ground that delivered more lace out passes to our players than Matt tonight, even surprised me.
