Did we watch the same game?
Don't think there was a Crows player on the ground that delivered more lace out passes to our players than Matt tonight, even surprised me.

The lack of pressure on him at any stage helped, but he did hit more stab passes in this game than he has in the last 30.

Matt hit up tex a few times, including a sitter tex dropped. Think he got a talking to by rabbit. He had some pointless handballs, but looked to get on the boot more often.

Care to explain then why the 'fittest player on our list' had the lowest game time of anyone bar the injured Hampton, and spent much of that time forward? Or would you like to sit in the back and chew on your foot in privacy?

There is and always has been a difference between training ground fit, and AFL midfield matchday fit. I'm pretty sure he'll get there eventually, but not yet.
His TOG had nothing to do with his fitness and there has been no correlation between fitness and T O G under The Don.

We prefer to give less experienced players lower TOG and build this up over time.

If you had watched any SANFL live you would be aware that he is still running hard in the Q4.

He should have been given more time in the midfield but this will come very quickly.

Take your Crouch blinkers off, most of them were absolutely not stab passes, but I guess we should all accept that's as good an acknowledgement as you've ever given any facet of Matt's game.

These kinds of threads are starting to sound repetitive:
- 6-9 goal losses = whole team crap, pretenders, no more playing (insert random Crows player), we won't make Finals, crap, crappy, crap, crap..
- 10-16 goal wins = disappointing win.

Good: 2 debutants playing with heart. Greenwood showing good attack and composure.
Bad: 1st quarter. Aim for the rest of the season is to play each quarter NOT like our past month's 1st quarters!

Good:

Thor. Feel good debut. Tackles like a beast. Expect he will struggle at times, but promising start.

Charles. He is electric. Not bad for a Petrenko clone.

Bad:

We have ZERO tall targets. McGovern needs to come back quick smart.

The starts. Another shit one.

We don't like less than perfect conditions.

When we are bad, we are very very bad.

They were 30m stab passes. It's not even a debate, that's what they were, why do you need to try and die on every hill? It just makes you look incredibly desperate for no good reason. I said he played well and that's still not enough for the zealots and the true believers.

Brad Crouch, the least fit player, has the lowest average TOG of anyone who has played this year without going off injured.

There's a clear and proven difference between SANFL midfield fit and AFL midfield fit too. Midfield running at the AFL level is faster, harder, longer, and has more repetitions of that higher intensity.

Keep gnawing at that foot.

Something I learnt actually: a pessimistic fan base is willing to write off good early season form because "it's only April/May". But losses can potentially mean you're out of the premiership race.

Fascinating. Obviously there's work to do, few would deny that.

Isnt it patently obvious that you can't have won a premiership by this points, but you can have lost one?

I must have missed the post where you actually said Matt played well previous to this but there I've managed to prise it out of you, harder than pulling hen's teeth out but kudos to you for saying the 2nd "positive" thing about Matt's game tonight even if somewhat begrudgingly. :thumbsu::)

At least we know Cameron isn't injured.

Our back six looks disorganised at present. Hartigan was poo for the third week in a row - he currently has NFI whether to mark or spoil (he usually does neither). Time for a spell in the seconds. Walker, Otten and Lynch are shocking in the air, and all three got caught out playing from behind. We had one contested mark in the first half. One.

Fumbling was the theme of the night. Douglas and Lynch the worst offenders.

Lever is outstanding. Should be in the leadership group already.

Greenwood was awesome. Composed with the ball, and a madman when he didn't have it. Haggis would have a smile on his face after tonight.

It's too early to tell if we've regained our mojo - I want to see our mids tighten up on them at stoppages, an end to the constant fumbling and our backs to stop making schoolboy errors.

Atkins was absolute rubbish up until junk time.

The last 3 weeks has shown me that he is an absolute liability when the pressure is turned up.

This Mcrouch, Douglas, Sloane combination for the start of games must end now. This combination just isn't effective in the heat (start) of the game.

Kelly is a liability (or luxury) we just can't afford. Sure, he tries and is a reasonable defender, but modern afl requires your medium defender to also be composed, attacking, skillful, but most importantly a great reader of play. He must be the only "shut-down" medium defender in the league. He is a liability or luxury we that we can't afford. The panic in our backline can set in so fast and its like a disease that spreads like wildfire. When the panic sets in, the last thing you need are unskilled bad decision makers.

I want Doedee for Kelly now, he is again in the best in the reserves and will be that missing link in defence that adds composure, and will help settle the side when under fire.

Greenwood was everything i expected, but the thing I loved most, composure. You can tell he wants the ball in his hands when the pressure is on. Winner.

Lever, we've missed him.

Thought Milera was excellent in the first half and some of his passes, especially that short snap pass to Lynch was sublime.

Overall, I think its good just to get your confidence back, but there is so much more work to be done.

Is smith actually injured? Maybe just a knock and mothballed?

I thought our effort was terrible in Q1 - lots of situations where we had not many players around contests because of lack of work rate. Even against brisbane if you're outnumbered at the contest every time you will not win the ball out. Also we were really, really fumbly.

That was the noticeable thing that changed after Q1 - effort to have players at the fall of the ball. And that turned it. Then Brissy got tired and our effort stayed - we smashed it. Effort went away with 15 minutes left in Q4 and it went back to status Quo.

We remained fumbly all night. That was disappointing.
Smith was sore so taken off, curtly on crutches. Not sure how bad he is according to Teague.

Hugh Greenwood makes sparkling AFL debut as Crows smash woeful Lions at the Gabba

The average will apply pressure for longer, the best sides will sustain pressure.

The first quarter was very worrying and will be what needs the most analysis.

This was Brisbane for f#$k sake and they simply followed a blueprint and made us look likes panicky scared little pussies, for a quarter at least.

This will reinforce the perceptions of us.

Ugly:

The fact that we can be winning by 50+, and an eventual margin of 80, but yet still refuse to ****ing play Greenwood in the midfield.

We have serous midfield issues. We have serious two way running issues. But hey here's a bloke that plays midfield, runs both ways AND LAID 9 TACKLES IN THE GOD DAMN FORWARD LINE! But nooooooooooo let's just stash him away up forward for the whole match, even though the game was won, we don't need to see if Greenwood has something to offer up forward at afl level at all. It's not like he's done well at SANFL level in this role...

This club really makes me scratch my head sometimes. Was looking so forward to seeing some stoppage work from Hugh. Don't get me wrong he played very well and great for him to kick 3, but honestly, sometimes I wonder what the **** we are playing at.

Greenwood was in the centre square for about half a dozen restarts across the match, and his heat map backs that up.

Team high 22 pressure acts too, ahead of Brown, M. Crouch, and Otten with 21, though 5 Lions were higher

Keep forgetting I have a free AFL Live Pass and all the premium stats that come with it

We had a win but not an overly convincing win......well at least in our minds. It funny that we all think we did poorly tonight...myself included. I know that comparing how other teams have fared against the Lions is not a true indicator but lets take a look
Rd1 Lions beat the Suns
Rd2 Essendon bt Lions by 37pts
Rd3 St Kilda bt Lions by 31pts
Rd4 Tigers bt Lions by 52pts
Rd5 Dogs bt lions by 32pts
Rd6 Port inflicked the Lions biggest lost which was by 83pts.
Rd7 Swans bt Lions by 54pts
Rd8 Hawks bt Lions by 38pts.

Now you also have to remember some of the medias comments about some of those wins. Essendon were really excited. In fact if you go back and check the statements most were happy to win by 40 points. Now here we are all bitching about the win. Any win by 80 points is a good win. However we all saw a team that fumbled the ball. That struggled again in the first 40 minutes. That executed poorly when the pressure was applied even during the last half. So I say we had a big win and I happy about that but we need to play better footy for longer and the reality is that yes we can play better footy. if we want to win the flag we must.

The obvious good to me was Greenwood. Have been calling for his inclusion all year and late last year. Many were not convinced but right now I believe that all are convinced.

I am not sure when Brown was moved into the centre but during the last quarter he looked good in there. He's a strong tackler (remember the tackle at the end of the Richmond game) and we need to improve our game in that area.

It was good to see CC come back in that 3rd quarter but he still needs to play out the full game. If he could play like that even for only 3 quarters what a difference that would make.

I am disappointed with Atkins. This kid has all the attributes of being a great player but for all his wizardry and skill he stuffs up too often by trying to do the lairy thing like running around an opponent and then having to handball over his head to get out of trouble. He needs to think about what is best for the team and improve his execution....god knows he has the skills

Next week will be a better test to gauge where we are at and then there will be Geelong at Geelong.

We did it in the last quarter, and stuck Sloane on the half back line, presumably to give him some practise for future tag breaking while Smith was off.

Could he also be another string....flexability. Brown is just so underrated.

Eh, maybe, but I'm more inclined to think they were just getting a battered Sloane out of the road with the game done, and Hampton and Smith both being off injured was limiting our ability to do it with the bench.

Greenwood was in the middle for the entire last quarter it looked.
