I think one of the best things to come out of the game was that Mackay was made traveling emergency for a reason I hope. If he was and he will not be on our list next year, then afc is smarter than I thought

Good to not lose the game at selection. Please please please take note of this, AFC. Do not bring back Mackay, as tempted as you may be, and nicely as he may ask. CERTAINLY not without at least one or ideally two to three games in the seconds.

The Mighty Thor stole the show with three goals in the first half to open the game up for us and also laid nine tackles. It took him one game to equal Mackay's PB for goals in his 171 game career. Don't really care for the back of the neck tats, but willing to ignore it if he can become the big-bodied goalkicking enforcer midfielder we've been screaming out for. Showed every indication that he will with his debut tonight.

Gallucci showed promising signs without being exceptional. Good hard running to get the goal even if the sting had gone out of the game by then. IMO we should back him in for at least the next couple of weeks since the midfield cupboard is bare at the moment.

Good to get back on the winners list. Brisbane obviously aren't a powerhouse, but hopefully we can get our mojo back now with a bit of morale back. Test now is to continue against Freo, who will be a good test given their dour defensive strategy we have struggled against the last few weeks.

The big concern from this game is the first quarter. Pretty much every team in the league will slaughter us playing like that. We were fortunate that Brisbane kicked badly and are still too inexperienced to go with us for a whole game. Also concerning is that our midfield depth is paper thin if that. Atkins and Douglas seemed to be in competition for Worst on Ground honours particularly in the first half. Ideally I'd drop one of them, but, coupled with the possible Hampton injury (he's another that's been poor lately) we have just about nobody to replace them (we're down to about Wigg, Poholke and Gore with a combined zero games experience), unless we pull something unexpected out of the hat like playing somebody like Cheney in the middle, or of course if we want to go down the Thompson path, and I certainly don't want to do that.
Think if Cheney and Doedee are brought in down back, Laird could be used more in the middle and Smith on the wing taking Atkins position to find form in the seconds and get rid of that ridiculous haircut. If Knight gets a good run with injuries he could also get more minutes in the middle if Douglas drops off on output.

Pretty irritated with the crows right now. I think we can safely conclude its a very even comp this year and therefore we more than have the cattle to win a premiership, but our coaches utter downright pig headed (should that be craig-headed) refusal to do anything to help out our defense means we have little chance.

Our relies-on-precision defense is great when the conditions are perfect or the opposition cant bring more heat than we can but on inclement days, slippery decks and/or with a team breaking even at the contest and pressure then we invite disaster upon ourselves.

A KPI i'll be looking for for the rest of the season is times when we put extras back occaisionally in conditions as mentioned above or when sides get a run on or to look at our defenders all being goal side at times (normally we have 50% in front) or to have a few drop off a contest on defensive side and covering the center around the wing bounce contests and throw ins. If I see none of that then I see we have almost no chance of going deep this year.

In other news...
Has been interesting to see the competition blow the popular notion that tagging is ineffective out of the water. If I hear our coaches blindly parrot that sentence in the next 18 months I'll be putting a black mark against them.

Looks like Lairdy is getting pretty good around the contests, we use him in there a fair bit now. Luke Brown also starting to get introduced to it and doing alright.

Lots of players in odd positions, saw Milera back pocket last night, possibly even greenwood there for a bit as well. Good for us to keep rotating people around. Wouldn't mind seeing Tex being given runs in the middle late in games when we dominate - in preparation for him to do the same when we are going poorly - he gets frustrated being left out of the action when we get beaten.

Speaking of Tex, he's brought back his regulation 1 howler per game from last year that he'd eliminated in the first 5 rounds.

Greenwood, gooch and charlie - champs!!

Only 13,802 at the Gabba :$ On TV it sounded like there was just as many crows fans. Those different coloured seats are tarps in disguise.

Plenty of Crows fans. I was surrounded by crows supporters in bay 13. Hard to tell Brisbane apart from us sometimes. Quite similar colours.
And I said the same thing to my friends when they put the attendance up. Re the seats.
I heard a Brisbane fan say how happy she was with her teams performance. I felt for her, wow their bad.

Atkins was absolute rubbish up until junk time.

The last 3 weeks has shown me that he is an absolute liability when the pressure is turned up.

This Mcrouch, Douglas, Sloane combination for the start of games must end now. This combination just isn't effective in the heat (start) of the game.

Kelly is a liability (or luxury) we just can't afford. Sure, he tries and is a reasonable defender, but modern afl requires your medium defender to also be composed, attacking, skillful, but most importantly a great reader of play. He must be the only "shut-down" medium defender in the league. He is a liability or luxury we that we can't afford. The panic in our backline can set in so fast and its like a disease that spreads like wildfire. When the panic sets in, the last thing you need are unskilled bad decision makers.

I want Doedee for Kelly now, he is again in the best in the reserves and will be that missing link in defence that adds composure, and will help settle the side when under fire.

Greenwood was everything i expected, but the thing I loved most, composure. You can tell he wants the ball in his hands when the pressure is on. Winner.

Lever, we've missed him.

Thought Milera was excellent in the first half and some of his passes, especially that short snap pass to Lynch was sublime.

Overall, I think its good just to get your confidence back, but there is so much more work to be done.

If you think we will win a premiership this year without Douglass in the mid you have lost it considering the depth we have for the mid, I don't need to debate the point. Douglass is having a fantastic year his best game was the showdown in a tight contest that needed to be won. Both Hinkley and Pyke gave him votes which I was more interested in Hinkleys votes. As he was going to vote a player that cost him the game

As for Milera he is travelling ok need to play him to develop him but let's not get carried away with what he is offering he is in and out of the game for sure

The other young player in Kelly is also developing nicely is showing he can play seniors and is actually offering more than Milera. As for trying a new player that hasn't played seniors yet and calling him the missing link OMG.the crows put him in their best as an encouragement award the real best players from the independent observer didn't I didn't see the game so won't make judgement but remember he was 1st and 2nd in the b and f last year in the twos

The only player that will be added to that backline and he will need to force his way in or hope for injuries is Cheney he showed last year he is more than capable of being top 22 and we talk about needing to harden the F up and who else can we bring in besides Thommo who is Ancient

Good old BF

Lose last week and this thread is 20 pages by next morning

Win by 80, consolidate top spot and it's at 6 pages the netx morning... go figure

It wasn't anything special, but people looooooveeeee to be negative. It's just so easy isn't it?

I know we have work to do, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy aspects of last night. And seems if you do, you're being shot down by the negative nancys who tell you to 100 reasons why we're shit

Maybe they should write a book?

It's not surprising really. When your is being smashed by 10 goals every week, and a few days before the game the radio is saying you'll get a months worth of rain over the weekend, it doesn't sound like a fun time.

Ugly:

The fact that we can be winning by 50+, and an eventual margin of 80, but yet still refuse to ****ing play Greenwood in the midfield.

We have serous midfield issues. We have serious two way running issues. But hey here's a bloke that plays midfield, runs both ways AND LAID 9 TACKLES IN THE GOD DAMN FORWARD LINE! But nooooooooooo let's just stash him away up forward for the whole match, even though the game was won, we don't need to see if Greenwood has something to offer up forward at afl level at all. It's not like he's done well at SANFL level in this role...

This club really makes me scratch my head sometimes. Was looking so forward to seeing some stoppage work from Hugh. Don't get me wrong he played very well and great for him to kick 3, but honestly, sometimes I wonder what the **** we are playing at.

Greenwood played a lot of midfield for a debutant, I thought. And he'll play more now.

Are you saying those who can find enjoyment in a 80 point win don't?

I want it more than anything too. But its round 9, we're top and the teams around us aren't exactly setting the world on fire

EVERY team has had an absolute diabolical week (or more) this year and it's only been 9 weeks so far.....

Hell, GWS should have 2 more losses instead of 2 W's over the past 2 weeks..... imagine if that had happened? What happens if they lose a few more from here and don't make top 4?

I have my concerns, but i also feel people should be balanced. It's all to easy to lay into these players after a shit loss, than give them some kudos after a nice win..... that's my whole point really

Fair call :)

We all want a flag!

It's difficult dominate 4 quarters for a whole season.

Important thing is we put ourselves in a position to win a flag, preferably by finishing top-2 & in decent form leading into the finals.

Even better if we can do this testing some depth, including blooding new players.... & under pressure at times to adjust our game plan.

It's a long season...

We haven't dominated for 4 quarters for a single game this season, let alone all season.

Ignoring our pathetic starts is head in the sand stuff.

Good solid game did what we were expected to do, I enjoyed it hopefully the last two games were a hiccup this one is just another smashing we have had this year, we can't complain about any one of the wins we've had all high scoring games

Would be unlucky for anyone to be dropped unless injured

I am happy with last night and hope it continues no need to reinvent the wheel after last nights game

They're unbelievable aren't they. After 19 years of nothing you think they would also be demanding more, but no.
good thing guys like you are giving us a chance with your forum posting

Even if we finish top 2 it's pretty clear we don't play the style of footy to go all the way.

The Good:
Greenwood
Sloane
Cameron

The Bad:
How 2 brothers can get a lot of disposal and the feeling is meh
Hamptons injury
1st quarters

The Ugly:
15 metres
Father Time nipping at a few players heels
Lever and MCrouch should be in the good

Lever is our most important defender.

I am far from Crouch biggest fan, but i thought last night was one of his beter games. A lot more kicking with penetration.

Never said Douglas shouldn't play any midfield minutes, I'm saying Douglas and MCrouch shouldn't be part of the starting mid combination. We are obviously getting killed at the start of games as I think it's a lot to do with who we start with at the beginning of a game in the midfield.

I think we should change it up and go with a more powerful and explosive midfield. Bring Douglas and crouch on later after the sting has gone out of the game.

Noone knocking Kelly for his efforts. But if you can't see the missed opportunity in playing him as a medium defender, then it's too hard for me to explain.

Did we watch the same game?
Don't think there was a Crows player on the ground that delivered more lace out passes to our players than Matt tonight, even surprised me.

Lever and MCrouch shoukd be in the good

Both true. Matt played very well. Just concerned that both he and Brad had more handballs than kicks, nearly 1-2. The only other player to come close to a 1-2 ratio was Talia and I can accept that from a defender. So a lot of Matts 12 kicks were lace out. Would hope so.

Now this all may well be for nothing as I don't know what direction the coaches are giving but , given the other players ratios, I wonder. It wasnt as if I felt they were terrible, just a feeling of indifference over the brothers combined outputs.
