Two thirds through the first quarter my wife looked at me, gave me a half smile and one of those looks I've come to know so well when watching these games. Undeterred I reached over to get my drink. It was only then I realised it was half empty.........
I feel like I should know wtf you're talking about?

Fair call really. Clearly menzel is no chance of being picked in finals they gave games to the most likely that are. Don't mind it we need replacements up to speed short term pain long term gain
I said in the game thread, I would have picked Otten, either to directly replace Walker and sort of stand in the right place so the rest of the structure doesn't fall apart, or to replace whichever player from the current best 22 would move into Walkers role. Considering they spent much of the year forcing Otten into squads he didn't need to be in, I find it strange that he wouldn't be a first choice backup now?

The alternate would be to try out a different non-Walker focussed gameplan in case of future emergencies. Which there was either no sign of, or it failed spectacularly.

Agreed. I think it is clear that Hartigan will be better than Keath in finals at this point. Seed should stay in also. It was clear from the match who is soft and who isn't. Pyke will be greatly informed by the match and will have plenty of ammunition with which to work on the players. The real competition starts now: nil-nil. The only advantage we have is two home finals, not to be sneezed at.
Seed was good offensively but was poor defensively. Cant tackle and man up.
He needs to get a hell of a lot better.
This is why u cant ever look at stats and make an observation. You have to look at the game and see how they go.

Im not overly concerned about losing today but for me we have to clean up our kicking into our forward 50. Most of the year it has been a strength but the last couple weeks in particular today it has been terrible. Our tackling was ordinary today and needs to get back to the tackling we saw against geelong a few weeks ago.

Overused the ball horrendously, which is why the disposal numbers for the midfield were so inflated in a loss. I think the only player who really gave true value for his disposal count today was Seedsman, and maybe Smith.

Really need Greenwood back in, it's becoming clear that his inside work is the anchor for our clearance creativity.

I was overly harsh on Hartigan in the gameday thread. His one on one defensive work is very good... but feel like he has gone back to 2015 level in terms of disposal. Does he stay in and Keath go out? Keath didn't really do much to inspire today tbh

Seedsman going to be tough to drop after that

Seedsman gives us another option when good teams (like Geelong) blanket Smith knowing how important he is for us. I would much rather drop Cameron, Milera, Mackay and potentially even Atkins first.

We had a review thread for this game on our board but it seems to have been mysteriously deleted. Anyway, these were my thoughts:
- robbed by the umps
- Brad Crouch is a serious footballer, love that he plays socks up
- of course Jetta decides to play his only decent game of the year today, he'll disappear against Port
- Lynch and Jenkins were horrendous
- how has David Mackay played 150+ AFL games??
- Cameron showed up for half a quarter max, I'd take whatever Brisbane are offering for him and run
- Laird turned it over a hell of a lot for someone who is supposedly AA
- I reckon Kelly is a a bloody good player, another brilliant recruiting decision by the Pies not to take him father-son
- Mitchell is a champ and probably deserves to go out playing finals so that's something I suppose

They weren't perfect but I doubt that the 87 disposals from the Crouch bros are why we lost...

I find Hartigan very reliable one on one with his direct opponent. I'd argue he's possibly the best in the squad in these situations*.

If it's a situation he voluntarily puts himself in, he is atrocious.

*A large part of this is that he doesn't have to deal with a second Kyle Hartigan clumsily and unnecesarily crashing the pack and causing the ball to spill to an open forward.

Seedsman was very average, to tell u the truth, he seems to be playing without confidence. Due to that he was second guessing himself, plus his tackling was awful

I'm glad you inserted the word "possibly" in there.

Don't feel anything in particular towards or against Melbourne or West Coast but it's good that the team that won made the finals and the team that lost didn't. Both got exactly what they deserved. It was in Melbourne's hands and they have no one to blame but themselves.
Besides. Anytime a Melbourne team is NOT in the finals, it's good enough for me!:D

Seedsman may have played himself into Mackays spot.
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...don't be so far ken silly Golumless:D

Good - No apparent injury
Bad -The umpiring was shit; but hey, so was last week;)
Ugly - Some passengers who didn't cement their spots. Atkins and Knight.

- how has David Mackay played 150+ AFL games??
That is something a lot of us here would like to know. He plays a good quarter here and there, and a good game once in a blue moon. His preparation and recovery is apparently as professional as they come, and no doubt would look good on the training track with no pressure. But simply isn't up to it when the whips are cracking, but there is no doubt that he will be picked to play the first final, and no doubt he will be exposed, AGAIN !!

Totally agree with this. People stating that he has been good this year are stuck in 2016. His decision making and execution has been awful for a lot of this year. He is miles off how well he played last year. Will need to be much, much better if he holds his spot.
