The three things that are keeping Nicksy in the job

1) Zero expectations or pressure on him to do anything
2) Tex
3) We generally always have a go and compete. If players start to drop in effort will lose by big margins as there isn't much talent in that team

Tonight's LOL moment ...
I was watching Nicks' post-game presser. When he said:
"There's still a lot of positives coming out of where we're at", I laughed, and stopped watching.
Wow. Did anyone watch the presser in full? I’ve searched for it but can’t find it. Would be interested if any journo asked a difficult question

A lot of blame put on basic kicking errors, particularly in defence.

Just a thought Matthew, how about dropping those players who can’t kick.

Berry was BoG for us.

Sog building to a break out game.

Fog finally playing like a mobile key forward.

We looked good ever time Laird and Crouch were not involved.

Doedee was terrible. Made the comment during the game comparing DeGoey partying in Bali and Doedee holidaying on the Gold Ciast during their time off. DeGoey will perform. Yes I do think our lack of KPD is affecting Doedee, but he was not switched on at all. His worst game for us.

Hately being moved all over the shop. We saw with Crouch out he is a pure mid.

Goal kicking beyond the joke now.

Tex giving away a dumb 50. Then arguing about it. We were never going to win, but when you see the onfield leader act like that (arguing a free/50 so strongly) you will naturally go negative. Our guys did. From. That point on our game was over. They kicked four more goals.

Overuse of handball. Had some great passages of attacking handball. But far too much negative handball.

Watching games over the weekend, do you notice the crows always give free kicks away that only happen in crows games. The umpires we awful today and are not up too it. The AFL has a big problem, can’t get umpires and can’t find any up to standard. We are about as good as the umpires at the moment

I'm just focusing on the positives and ignoring the fact that the club's direction is an embarrassment designed to promote a short term sugar hit at the expense of long term growth, endorsed by supporters who believe it's their role to blindly support the club, an administration who believes it's their right to do as they please without scrutiny, and chase perpetual relevance instead of the ultimate success.

So, with that in mind:

Good:
Parnell.
Sure, defensive stuff needs work. But that's the kind of stuff a good defensive system/team defence can cover while he learns. And he's only a kid, so plenty of time. We have an absolute dearth of genuine drive out of defence with Brown/Butts/Murray being generally allergic to it and Jones/Hamill having no idea where to run to, so Patty's dash, ball use and general competitiveness, courage and aggression sticks out. Love it.

Soligo. Forget the draft pick. Last year was a weird year. This kid's special. Rate of improvement great. Nice user, composed. Tough as nails. Works both ways. Only 19. I don't mind that he's a midget - the problem is limited short people. He's not limited. Josh Ward was drafted at 7 and is the same size/very similar style of player. Soligo's been better than him by some distance. I genuinely would not be surprised if he was a top 3-4 player on our list in 2024, and probably our best player by the time he's 24. How good is it to have some hope in the kids, finally.

Too many umpires making too many decisions. Umpires calling frees when they are 50metres away from the play is just bullshit umpiring.

I remember Burgess talking in the PS that it wasn't just running that Fog needed to do in the off-season, but ID what type of running he's to do in the AFL and what sort of player you want him to be. So his initial guess on Fog was they wouldn't need to load him up on endurance training, but have him be more of a burst runner over 10-30 metres. That both those plays today look like he's gone that route for sure.

And the play against Witherden with the Eagles where he turned him inside out

Fog is definitely showing some attributes not previously seen with him

Thanks what a pathetic bunch of questions and Nicks is deluded if he thinks we are ahead of where we were last year. Whose developed? Berry and some newbies, Soligo and Rachelle. McHenry, Jones, Sholl and Shoenberg have gone backwards. Pedlar hasn’t come on. It’s turning out to be wasted year for TT. Worrell hasn’t even had a chance. McAsey has played a good sanfl game.

Our gameplan has gone backwards.

Nicks is an idiot.

I would add Sam Berry, think it was a real breakout game for him.
Took on Touk Miller and came out on top.

Yeah, honestly, I forget Berry's a kid too because he's the only bloody bloke in that midfield playing like a seasoned veteran. Works his guts off. Smart choices, defensively sound. Just an excellent player.

It is the rule. Rightly or wrongly he encroached. An easy decision for the umpire.

He then argued the point which effectively killed the game for us. No doubt too many of our guys also upset about it and we dropped our bundle. Gold Coast kicked four goals in four minutes.

It was a mentally weak end to the game

And yeah, Murray should have got a free.

There were two or three examples that were worse and weren’t given during the game. The Suns player hadn’t even got back off the mark when Walker ran through. Terrible call

Nicks walked into that press conference to bag the players and that's pretty disappointing. He should have backed them in. To me his defensive nature suggests he isnt great on reflecting on his coaching. Its one thing when the side is a top 4 side and loses, to bag the players but to do it in this circumstance was kind of lousy. Bet thats going to further win the players over.
