That was the "after some time" part. And the difference is that Swans and Brisbane can (and do) get father/sons and their academy players. Other clubs do not.

Or they employ a former player with a gun son as an assistant coach so they can get them through their academy. I'm sure Nick Blakey would've never discovered AFL footy without Sydney's academy assistance.

He seems to show a lot more loyalty to senior players now than he used to in terms of list spots. That is what I was getting at.

Chapman, Bartel, Kelly, Stokes and SJ etc., were all booted out at around 31/32.

Yet, in more recent times, equal and often lesser players like Tuohy, Guthrie, Duncan, Stanley, etc., seem to be treated very differently and be allowed to play on into their mid thirties/announce their own retirements.

Sports science is a lot better than it once was.

34 is the new 31 in this sport.

A guy like Dangerfield would have never played like this ten years ago. Big power athletes usually never lasted long in footy.

I’m sorry, but Mullin was pretty invisible till later.

I did go back and watch his footage on the app. His best passage by far was in the 2nd where he took the running bounce throughout the middle and launch the i50 from the centre square to Neale's advantage deep directly out. Resulted in Dempsey's brilliant goal.

His first quarter was a little anonymous but given the low total TOG and higher stats the other quarters I think it's likely he was on the bench a lot early.

His stats were low but the only mistake I think he made is his inside 50 turnover. The rest of his involvements were good. I especially liked him taking on the tackler and winning a couple of times. The kid has some serious upside

Gees just saw the play where stewart runs down bailey and then sends the ball down the guts for henry to kick the snap from the pocket to put us back in front.

Absolute bone chilling moment.

If we won that game that play would be remembered for decades. Sadly it will now be forgotton by next week.

Thinking about things since Saturday, and although I had that horrible feeling all week that the result we got is what would happen, I concede that all teams this year have had their ups and downs, but as supprters we critique our own team more harshly- well I do.
I think this result hurts so much because of the joy we felt 2 years ago, and how great that was. And we were indeed close. A Holmes virus and injury, and that may have been the difference.
Who knows who was afflicted with Covid last week, but it sounds like there was a bit going on.
And S. King.
Some of our guns has poor games, none moreso than Stengle, and let's hope our young players that have experienced the pain of Saturday come back stronger and hungrier.
And hoping we can keep players like DEK, who will be disappinted but if honest with himself, should get that he was not an automatic selection last week.
And then those that will retire.
How long Stanley, who still has something, and Duncan, who looks cooked, stay on, will be interesting list management.

Chappy wasn’t booted - we had a 1-yr contract on the table for him but he wanted 2 years which we weren’t going to offer

As such, the club advised him he was welcome to explore his opportunities & if he could get a 2yr deal elsewhere we wouldn’t stop him from leaving, which is the same situation that Stringer currently finds himself in at Essendon - he has triggered a 1yr extension but wants a 2yr deal which they won’t give him

Duncan as sub is a terrible descion and I don't think we can have both Bews and Mullin together. We lost it in the middle, same problem we've had for the last 2 years. We're still relying on Danger to lift to get us over the line.

What annoys me is that Miers goal assist is one of the greatest plays I have seen in football in 40 years of watching the sport but like you said since we lost it likely isn't on the highlights reel.

It's behind the 2019 and 2013 prelims as far as prelim losses go for me at least.

But it honestly hurts more than the 2020 GF tbh.

For me 2008 GF, but I'd rank the 2013 QF at home the next worst. A true funereal atmosphere walking out of the ground that day, playing at KP and going down, a ghastly outcome and the noise after the game was just silence, we were all in disbelief.

2019 QF was frustrating as I thought we were better than the Pies and we played poorly and lost by 10 points. 2013 PF was frustrating as an errant Allen Christensen kick OOB early in the last when he had a free Harry Taylor deep forward was turned straight around for a Hawks goal, a vital turnaround. And I felt we were out on our feet even if Varcoe had kicked the goal to even the scores.

This one, well we had our chances, but the feeling is mollified by the fact we went 9-9 in our last 18 games this season. It's just not the form a Premiership side has. When Ollie goaled I was ecstatic, but that was immediately killed by two Lion clearances (one courtesy of a Duncan misdirected handball), and we were down by 11 points. Poor Stanley, he was out of it, but maybe nobody just had the quick thinking for him to do a James Manson circa 1992 and grab his back for someone to take the kick for him.

But we have a promising group of younger players, and I have hope for the future.

Yeah when it looks good it's great but you can get burned defensively. Still not bad for a 30ish gamer

Yup, this is another 2019/2021 GF incoming all because the pre-finals bye gives teams that haven't earned it a slight break and as a result we see more upsets that the AFL deem exciting because we see a few straight sets exits and we see teams finishing 5/6/7/8 being more competitive, but as much as they want another "Bulldogs 2016 fairytale" final what we are really seeing is teams out of the top 4 just typically aren't good enough but getting upsets later in finals than usual.

1st v 5th is going to be a blowout, so I hope whatever the AFL stands to gain out of a Sydney premiership is worth it because I suspect a lot of fans will likely turn off at HT or 3/4 when the score is one sided.
The only interest for me is hoping we see a colossal Sydney bottlejob, but when your only hope heading into a GF is "man I hope the team higher on the ladder has one of the biggest chokes of all time just so the game isn't done by 1/4 time" and not "I can't wait to see the best teams in the league go at it on the biggest stage" then you have a problem.

Clearly a class above all year but optimism for us with Holmes, Bruhn.

Our team total was same as pies, dons, suns, dees, saints who all missed finals.

BTW Sydney team total 103! Others above 80 were blues, freo, gws, hawks, port and dogs who made finals.

We should be pretty proud making the prelim.
