McVeigh appeal risks two-match ban

July 10, 2007

Foxsports.com.au

ESSENDON utility Mark McVeigh will risk a two-match suspension when he challenges a striking charge at the AFL Tribunal tonight.

McVeigh would only have been suspended for one week if he had taken the early guilty plea after being booked for striking Cats star Gary Ablett during last Friday's clash at Telstra Dome.

But because of his existing poor record, McVeigh will miss two matches if the tribunal upholds the guilty verdict.

Teammate Dustin Fletcher has accepted a one-game sanction for striking Geelong's Kane Tenace and will miss Saturday's clash with Western Bulldogs.

Fletcher was booked for striking Geelong's Kane Tenace and McVeigh for striking Gary Ablett during last Friday night's match at Telstra Dome.

Yep, risks 2 weeks if found guilty.

Odds on to go. Does anyone remember the last time we got off at the tribunal?
Possibly Lloyd in 04 when he got reported in round 2 against st.kilda was rubbed out for 2 weeks and then appealed and got off and kicked 8 against the WCE in the miraculous game. Probably then

yeah very poor decision they should have just accepted it... they must have a pretty strong case though.... this is probably the most crucial time in the season to lose players.. with the bulldogs adelaide collingwood and hawthorn to come we need to keep out best 22 on the park...

mcveigh is one of our best leaders and very important to the team. losing him against adelaide would be detrimental to our chances... at least fletcher gets a week off to rest i spose

Fletcher suspended, McVeigh to face tribunal

ESSENDON'S Mark McVeigh will face the tribunal tonight to contest a striking charge.

He was cited by the match review panel for striking Geelong's Gary Ablett in the third quarter of last Friday's match.

He will be suspended for two matches if he is found guilty after he chose not to accept a one-match ban for an early plea.

McVeigh's teammate Dustin Fletcher accepted the panel's offer of a one-match suspension for striking Kane Tenace in the same game.

West Coast's Daniel Kerr yesterday also accepted a one-match sanction for striking the Lions' Will Hamill during the Eagles' loss on Saturday night.

Won't get off that.

Why not?

Footage is not conclusive and it looks more like a push than a strike.

If you look a the footage you could argue that McVeigh went to push Ablett in the chest but Ablett slipped or leaned over at the time and there was some contact to the throat.

I reckon he's got a pretty good chance of getting off.

According to another article he is likly to miss against the Dogs anyway even if he does appeal:

McVeigh could visit the tribunal on Tuesday night, but only to plead guilty to hitting Ablett in the body, rather than the head, as assessed by the match review panel.

He would still miss a match even if that ploy was successful, although it would reduce the amount of carryover points that will come into play if he commits future offences.

Yep, was successful but still gets one week. Had 103 points in the end.
Gary Ablett helped by telling them it was on the chest.

Gary Ablett tried to help but sounds like AFL legal counsel Andrew Tinney decided to ignore Gary's evidence as he thought it was a case of player protecting player.

Ablett told the tribunal he could not recall being punched, only pushed, which prompted AFL legal counsel Andrew Tinney to claim there was "unsatisfactory" aspects of the evidence because Ablett wanted to help a fellow player.

What has footy come to when a player cant tell the tribunal a little fib??

I have seen players with blackeyes and stitches claim it was only a little push and shove and no punches were thrown.
