PIES v SAINTS - that was an awesome NAB cup match

Yep, was a great game. How lucky we are.

This season will be a cracker.

Good luck to all, but by Zeus, I hope the Crows beat Collingwood in Rd. 21.

:(:rolleyes::p:):thumbsu::thumbsu:

Don't flatter yourself we have had far more embarrassing defeats this century than losing to St Kilda last year.

Not sure that you have really but I won't argue the toss. I am just illustrating the inanity of a poster saying StKilda is not up to the Dogs and Hawks. Maybe you can say that at the end of the year but based on everything we know right now that remark is about as stupid a remark as I have read here.

I think assumingfull fitness we would bring in Dal Santo, Hayes, Gram, Gardiner, Baker and maybe Clarke.

I thought pies were missing some midfielders but maybe not. Who would be starters in best 22 that didn't play tonite?

Anthony, Fraser and maybe Dawes.

Forwards which tonight for 2 quarters we looked limp in options.

More scoring shots we really should of won but ah well grats to the saints.

My biggest disappointment is that the Collingwood players didn't stand up for ball when he copped a lot of treatment in the 1st half. It's been a bug bear of mine for the last few seasons seems we lack any real mongrel.

I definitely do not consider this match a loss. It certainly didn't feel like it.

Let me educate you.

StKilda 100
Pies 99

The bigger number (100) is the winner. The littler number (99) is the loser.

Remember that one rule and you will suddenly find footy makes sense to you.

Firstly its a NAB game so the results count for little as do prediction based on its outcome re the remainder of the season

I thought Saints were impressive and did take the foot off in the 3rd Q

Altough we got back into the game didnt see as much improvement in some of the younger players as hoped for.

Ball was okay but turnovers a going to be a major issue. O'Bree comfortably ahead of him in our midfield at this stage

Dawson is the only weak link I see in the Saints. He is not stong enough against the big forwards and will rely on a lot of help from surrounding defenders. The beauty of Saints gameplan is they seem to be able to give him that support but I would expect opposition teams are putting time into how to get him isolated 1 on 1

They were losses because they were Grand Finals. I definitely do not consider this match a loss. It certainly didn't feel like it. As I was watching I cared more about the safety of the players on that surface than the score.

As Schneider was lining up for the last kick at goal I can just imagine you looking at the surface of the ground with a concerned look on your face.......:D:D:D

I reckon you are being hard on your team. I think what was really obvious is that both teams will be somewhere in the mix come september.

Lots of experimenting tonight with structures and what not.

Both sides will look a hell of a lot different come round 1.

Good bit of entertainment for Feb, but shit, I'm glad footy is played during the winter, because that was a hot sweaty evening.

I don't like the heat much.

good post, thought the same thing.
Was a cracker of a game tonight nonetheless.

Fisher, Steven, Stanley, Heyne, Gaertner, Miles, Smith. not one of them is in St Kildas best 25

you could make an argument that Peake isn't as well.

if Collingwood can't beat that with a near full strength squad I can't see how they're going to do it when St Kilda are in full swing

yep.

I could not believe Collingwood were 40pts down to that St Kilda side....and once again it showed they have way to many front runners. Looong way to go IMHO.

I do not think Collingwood are top 4 certs on that performance at all.....missing Jack Anthony WTF:D???.....Hawthorn will belt Pies.

For Saints - Dal Santo, Hayes, Baker, Gardiner, Gram to walk back into that side........Pies will struggle.

BTW - Tonight you saw the BEST Luke Ball has to offer - played a nice solid game for mine the best hes been and likely to be for some time.....still couldnt kick 40m or chase down an opponent.....

D Armitage had 7 tackles and 9 clearances for us tonight......already easily matching Balls output.....AND set up the matchwinner.....now wonder Ross Lyon hasnt lost sleep on this....

KissStephanie, you are one of the more one-eyed and aggravating posters on BF.

Think about that for a second. It's no small thing.

If that was something close to a full strength Collingwood team they are no chance for the flag this year.
I wish you were a bookmaker if you're offering no chance! There were four players missing from Collingwood's best team and they are a great chance of course, I didn't see anything that makes me change my mind about Collingwood finishing ahead of St.Kilda this year.
Also, no team will ever win a premiership with Leigh Brown in the side.
He is handy depth, and he kicked four goals, but I don't think he is in Collingwood's best side, and I don't believe he will be part of their premiership team this year. :)
By losing to them by a point, whilst missing Hayes and Dal Santo?
I don't consider that a loss and not just because four premiership points were not at stake. St.Kilda did have one extra point on their total, but that was all. They had an extra super-goal while Collingwood had seven more scoring shots. Of course Hayes, Dal Santo and Gram are good players amd Gardiner is their first ruckman, but Jack Anthony did kick 50 goals in his first full season which was Collingwood's highest goalkicker.

Shane O'Bree was in the top ten of the Copeland Trophy for a team that finished 4th last season. Josh Fraser is still the preferred back-up ruckman for Darren Jolly, and St.Kilda use that ground better. Neither team lost because there weren't any injuries on that shocking surface.

That's certainly one of the reasons that it didn't feel like a loss. It was strange to watch because I never really cared about the result. It was a positive to get through the match without injuries and to win so comfortably in clearances, scoring shots, and inside-50's.
