I can’t remember who, a player, it may have been Danger, had a revealing discussion with Hutchy and Liam Pickering on SEN on Saturday morning which essentially pointed out the player arrival runway as something that isn’t yet being promoted or flogged.

It’s coming.

I like how in the NBA it’s an organic thing where players are merely filmed arriving at the venue (sure, some wear outlandish things, but that’s who they are).

So instead of doing that, we have the AFLX players in a mixture of fancy dress and ridiculous contrivances, basically taking the piss. And it’ll inevitably be turned into a red carpet extravaganza sponsored by Myer and hosted by whatsherface who Hamish McLachlan salivates over during the Brownlow arrivals coverage.

Woo!

They’re already figuring out how to sell it. Yes.

i did not see your club speak up for the hate post on Kane Cornes. Hypocrites of the highest order. I could go on about your club’s hypocscy, especially as it is trying to get sound bites off of Eddie, but a waste if time. It would be somewhat tragic if it turns out to be staged.

If you dont want to agree with my original post saying we have to speak up, thats fine, but lets not turn the shitty racist instagram comment into a my club vs your club argument.
Although I'm not sure that you are serious when you suggest that this has somehow been staged.

I agree that it's very easy to see it become a cringeworthy extravanganza, but to say it's "organic" in the NBA is quite ludicrous. Designers & brands getting a coveted spot in the pre-game snaps and ensuing social media is immensely strategised and of course monetised.

Of course, this is an era where LeBron and others can earn $250,000 for one tweet/IG.

What I mean is, no-one held a summit at a specific moment and actively said “hey let’s dress like d-bags and arrive on hoverboards to actively shill for cash because sometimes during the pregame panel they show us turning up”, as is inevitably happening here.

Whereas someone like Westbrook is just a different cat who genuinely loves fashion:

In the USA everything is fake so the bullshit blends into the other shit more, also we're on the other side of the world so it's harder to see all opinions, but there are probably plenty of curmudgeons (a.k.a. traditionalists a.k.a people who just wanna follow the sport) who can't stand the Hollywood crap too

It was absolutely a deliberate piss take of the NBA entrances. I found it to be probably the most entertaining part of the whole thing.

Funnily enough the only footage I've seen over the entire thing as well.

FWIW Rance has been involved in the fashion industry & modelling since he was about 18, well before he was any kind of name or known public entity.

I agree the whole thing is pretty superflous and commercially driven with the undoubted benefit of being an ego-trip for the players, but I just don't like the point that it's all pure and cool in the US but somehow not here. The players love it, it's surprisingly genuinely a pretty significant talking point among fans and general public alike and deep down even the ever cynical bigfooty types keep a close eye on it to gain an insight into the characters of the game (who so often bleat there's no personality anymore).

I have similar thoughts on AFLX. Yeah the media and fans act like they're above it, spread negativity, exclaim loudly that they'll never watch it it's a disaster, a travesty, "Gil-the-dill" etc. But it's a pretty harmless exhibition that drew in a reasonable audience (particularly young kids), a bruise free run around for the players in a major stadium, the players clearly love getting together like that, the rest of the footy world continues on with their internal trials/local scratch matches, allows trial & development of a new concept that I think genuinely could be pretty successful in taking off for casual participation and spread of the game (minor contact, rectangular field, decent work out, still with the round ball etc - not talking about Gatorade Game Changers or that kind of made for the advertisers nonsense). The real stuff is starting up soon enough, but I don't get the offence that some are capable of concocting from it.

lol, ex Melbourne player Joel MacDonald has just been served by ASIC. Has to face Federal Court about his dodgy as **** business venture that has swindled millions out of big investors.

It's a compromised game that removes a lot of the elements that people love about the sport and includes gimmicky nonsense. The fear is that this is what the game will become.

How's the campaignerish camerawork from 7? Just focusing on Geelong - nothing about West Coast.
