My favourite part with the SANFL clubs is, once it was obvious SOMEONE was going to the AFL, that the worst possible choice was going to be a state side. At this time SOO games were getting big crowds.

How could they not see a state side was going to cannibalise all of them, except the club they were most worried about (Port)? Whicker and Basheer could see they’d get to rule over a cash cow, but as a collective those SANFL club presidents and boards were the dumbest collection of idiots, shooting themselves you could ever find. There’s being anti-Port, then there’s being just idiotic. They went way over that line.

Yep.

And as soon as the second licence was up for grabs every SANFL club except for Port was willing to dump everything it stood for - their identity, their name and their love of the Frankenstein's Monster they created called the crows - to get into the AFL.

And the three clusterfecks they created:

  • Norwood/ Sturt Amalgamation
  • North/West/Eagles/Centrals Cartel
  • Glenelg/South no ones really gives a feck

are never talked about again once Port gets that second licence.

The dripping hypocrisy of these leeches continues to this day.

That these collective minnows, now presiding over glorified ammo’s have control of half of AO remains as most WTF? Of Australian sports management. It’d be like your local go kart track getting to run the Australian GP. The sooner the SMA is half cricket and 2 each for us and the Crows the better.

Is there any discussion/podcast/article

With an interview with aSANFL clubs big wig about about who they were thinking (looking back now)

And yet those same fans will now say "Port sold their soul to enter the AFL and so don't deserve to wear the bars" without a hint of irony.

The Age reports “the majority of the AFL Commission remains open to the idea of the GF game being played under lights this year.

“It remains unlikely, however, that the AFL will go from a 2:30pm start to 7:20pm (night timeslot) in just 12 months.

“Sources familiar the discussions about the timing indicate for that reason, a 4:40pm fixture remains likely for 2023.”

Maybe in the eyes of a couple of thinkers in the AFL administration but do not under-estimate how hard the SANFL pushed to stop Port's go it alone bid.

Never forget that many months into the bidding process, and after Port has made it clear it would be entering a stand alone proposal and was not prepared to join with another club to secure AFL entry, the SANFL Future Directions Committee issues a 200 page report recommending that the next AFL licence be handed to a team formed by the amalgamation of two clubs.

And low and behold, less than 2 full days after that SANFL report is released. Sturt and Norwood publicly reveal their plans to amalgamate as their bid for the second licence.

Just a coincidence of course.

I Dont Think So No Way GIF

Nope - it was never going to be a lay down misère for Port Adelaide to enter the AFL - not with the SANFL in charge of the bidding process..

Which is why Boulton, Bucky and their team at Alberton left no stone uncovered in putting together a comprehensive application that could not be ignored.

Fun fact Graham Cornes went public in his endorsement when he said "The next licence just has to be Port Adelaide".

I can't find the quote but remember him saying as I tripped over my bottom lip. Why he said it I don't know but said it he did.

The Cartel. What a proud moment of SNAFL unification.

A newspaper cutting from 23 June 1994 with 'Cartel' spokesman Jamie 'Pablo' Coppins complaining about the 'aggressive media exercises of clubs such as Port Adelaide' forcing the hand of the other SANFL clubs.

'Clubs such as Port Adelaide'. FMD. What cowards.

BF did a 'whatif' on 'the Cartel' in the jumper design thread a few years back and this jumper was suggested. Reckon it's a winner

Sounds like a character in the prequels, played by someone like Grant Show after Dieter Brummer blew the audition
If you ever managed to see Arturu driving through the burbs in his classic roller silver shadow with that (also classic) taped-on toupée you would know how close to reality that description is.

Hard working dude though from all accounts, it has to be said.

Norwood forever will be a feeder club playing at an outdated suburban oval in front of dwindling crowds as the years go on. Deal with it.
Ironic. If they 'd broken with the rest of the SANFL and supported our bid for the first AFL license and won it they would have probably won the second license and would now be in the AFL rather than a 3rd rate state league.

Norwood in the AFL? Ya dreaming. What would they call themselves and who are they marketed towards?

Best way to go about a third team would be to develop a new franchise which covers all of Onkaparinga and the Fleurieu Peninsula to capture the growing population in the South - this will cover a population over 500,000+ in the coming years.

The Southern Panthers would be an excellent name for this team. Southern since we cover the large southern expansive of South Australia, and Panthers which is a unique mascot to the SANFL (WAFL and VFL never had a Panther team) - so you have a uniquely South Australian club.

SAFC in the SANFL can be the reserves side for the Southern Panthers, unless a reserves league gets established by the AFL.
He's back!

Is that allowed? Don't Norwood have a rule they must always have red socks, because they are red legs?

Mmmm, fire engine red socks with baby blue guernseys... what a combo.

I grew up as a mate of Tom, was in his classes, hung out at parties, played golf with him and he came to many SANFL GF's with me when he was a Magpie fan (He was one of those supported both clubs people, that gravitated towards the Crows more over time). He was the absolute life of the party, he is an extremely charismatic and hilariously funny guy, but he also always had that little bit of weird.

Knowing all I do, it is hard to comprehend that he is a sports presenter and paid for sporting knowledge.

No doubt he now has lots of contacts, spends all day on sport for his job, and hangs in sporting circles as part of it all, but I still can't take him fully seriously knowing sporting and footy wise he is far less educated than many, including myself. Then when he does something like this and just copies a story from another station, it feels like it just shows his lack of depth in the sports industry.
Modern day journo's are employed for their compliance to their master's message, not their ability to report news.

Every poll I've seen says people prefer a daytime GF.

But I'm in the minority. A Sat night GF with family and mates over to watch is so much better in my view than a daytime game.

I reckon as soon as it shifts to a night GF (which it will) most will come on board.

Not sure this is quite AFL standard. Must be an old photo...

The fact that Google maps hasn't caught up with the latest images should not surprised any one.
