As a side note I'm liking that they're using Waterman more and more as a swingman.
If he can develop his intercept marking he will become a very handy utility. His gut running and nous for finding space is just as useful spreading on the rebound as it is leading toward the ball.
Until recently he's been a feast or famine player, largely dependant on whether we are moving the ball well on the outside. Having the ability to go back when the space or goals aren't there for him up forward will help him offer more consistent contributions.

He’s a young key position player in a team overloaded with AA level key position players. He hasn’t looked out of place at AFL level given he’s basically played out of position. I think people forget how long it normally takes a key position player to become an effective afl player.

I’m in Sydney and hear non stop about the love for McCartin and Blakey who are similar ages. They are playing but not actually contributing to winning football in any way.

brander will come good
I hope he does but our key positions are sewn up for a few years surely ,with edwards even being an emergency recently. I wouldnt be surprised if brander is used to get back into the early stages of the draft this year or next

Thing with Oscar is, have you ever seen him make a mistake or not execute something as well as he should? Very rarely, other than some shots on goal. Even in his first game or two that he played in defence in 2018.

His upside is so huge because he’s looked so comfortable right from the beginning. Might not have any standout traits but a tall playing like an experienced pro from day one is pretty good sign that he’s going to succeed.

Ideally we win this season and Kennedy retires a dual premiership triple Coleman medallist, so that we can fit in another KPF because we can’t afford to drop Oscar again because of balance
It's amazing how well his stats match up against Naughton's. Splitting hairs in most areas except hitouts, goals and clearances (Oallen) vs contested marks (Naughton). The difference is to be expected with the different roles they play.

He does most things to a very high level as you say. He's actually a rare breed in that he is a natural footballer with the athletic qualities to match. Many are either athletes who have to work on it (petch) or footballers who need to put a lot of effort into running, agility etc (guys like Ryan and Sheed are examples of players who have done the work).

Going to be a very good player for a long time, and looks like a future leader also.

Kennedy’s leading patterns are so elite. As Buckley said in his press conference our forwards work so well together to create space and have done so for a long time. It’s really noticeable when you sit behind the goals

Not sure about a long time.

I’ve vivid recollections of JK & JD (in the past & including in hub) often leading to the same spot and competing for the same mark. Created a pack, got spoilt by defenders fist and rebound.

AFL On The Couch (last night) Brown discussed this issue and identified our recent improvement ties in with better leading and delivery.

By long time I generally mean since at least when Simpson arrived and even before. Sure there’s been down times but Kennedy and lecras used to work together great as well as darling.

Last year it was Allen/Hickey/vardy/waterman that was getting in their way. JD and JK don’t often spoil each other. They have it figured out

But he doesn’t have a cool nickname like Astro

Speaking of “On the Couch” they showed the run of Oscar Allen to get from the centre of the ground to the goal square. He was being “chased” by Scharenberg. This was where Allen stopped the ball going through for a point and then kicked the goal. Seeing this extra vision not shown in the telecast makes me realise how much I miss going to the games.

Love this play. Shuey's run started within his own defensive 50.

Gaff puts the block on Grundy and a channel opens up through the corridor leading to the goal that put the team in front.

Note the supporting runners getting wide of the ball and stretching the Collingwood defence which creates space for the resultant attack through the corridor.

Mentioned a few weeks ago when we were is a slump players need to do more without the ball. Play the team game and put on a block, run and sheppard, pressure acts and help your team mate however you can.

When everyone focuses on the basics and especially helping team mates when you don't have the ball everything else comes together.

Yep, Simpson was saying how they tweaked and tuned a few things about their onfield brand during and after the QLD hub losses. The players took ownership, weren't happy with outcomes and the style they were playing, returned to a former 'brand'..it's as though they were experimenting with something new during the hub and it didn't quite gel?

Positives:

The missing midfield-forward link was rediscovered. Naita dominating the ruck lead to the ball getting in quick but the kick quality, running patterns and lowering of the eyes was a huge step up.

Defensively we look much, much better with our higher pressing plan. The defenders look more settled/less rushed and our higher ground position is leaving us far more room to confidently switch the ball and not leave our selves stranded 2-3 kicks from our goal. We're skilled enough to kick through a more compressed field and our opponents struggle to navigate the congestion as fluently.

Oscar 'n' Jake. Post Kennedy life no longer seems as daunting as it once did. Absolutely quality kids. Jake, a cult hero in the making. Oscar becoming a star in front of our eyes. Allen's ability to match it with Grundy was, quite frankly amazing and an absolute credit to the work Oscar must be putting in. The size to compete with the monster rucks will come in time but the kid has the skillz.

Negatives:

Duggan still struggling to pick the right option coming out of defence. Hurn improved but still seems a shell of his '18-'19 self.

Minor nitpicks in a dominant performance. I don't think a side has played that fluently all year : largepurpleaubergine :
Agree Rookie. The precision going forward was the biggest thing i took out of the weekend.Where has it been for a season and a half??
-Another little thing; JKs fourth goal? was created by Gaff running straight at Grundy and shepherding him ,that created a lot of space inside where Shuey duly went and had so much time and space to deliver. In this day and age of micro managing;looking for any tiny perceived advantage;shepherding is a major weapon going unused.WHY???

Major positive = Gaff's blocking, intercept marking, and all-round lift in intensity & 1%'ers. His impact on our team is often under-estimated.

Small negative - our blokes don't seem to have cottoned on to the current interpretation of HTB. Too many times our 2nd man in jumps on an opposition player that's about to get pinged. Noticed it from Redden, Cripps & Nelson.

I've been sceptical about Petch for a bit. Lifting his production is one thing but another thing is that he's a one trick pony. He needs to add many facets to his game other than speed. His footy IQ is low and his foot skills are to be desired.

Speed after a while drops. Jetta is prime example of that and you could see that decline at the end of his Sydney career. That said Jetta was able to adapt cause he was an elite ball user.
Petch needs to take a leaf out of Camerons book.1st we tackle;2nd we tackle;3rd we tackle. The kicks and goals will come just by being constantly involved.Sacrifice your desire for a stat and do something for the team!

Haha fair point, although I seem to recall more than a few Vic floggos locking them in for the flag before that game

If they don't count then scroll back to WCE v Tigers 2018. That's the last time I saw us play so well against such good oppo, to the degree it made the oppo look second rate.

Will be very curious to watch this Amazon series once the season is over and see if the boys took it upon themselves to go to that level or if Simmo asked them to make a statement. They flicked the switch big time, but how often can that be done?

The great sides seem to be relentless against any oppo, where we seem happy to conserve and chalk up wins without going for percentage, then pull off an absolute shellacking once a year against a contender. I wonder if that's now tactical and we've moved on from the flat tracking days.

Think you'll find a Sam Mitchell bake kick started the turnaround.

More Negatives and some perspective considering we've all had dicks out since Saturday over this game.

- Not sure if that still counts as us finally being tested. Sydney, Adelaide, Dockers and now a severely depleted Collingwood side.

- Lost the contested possessions against an under-strength team.

- Darlings dropped mark. It's funny and all but it only adds fuel to the notion that he is mentally weak or something. Sure the 2015/18 grand finals and this particular mark will get the spotlight, but he routinely drops easy marks he should be taking. It's not just these three.

I was also somewhat disappointed Oscar stole his goal. Darling needs to kick a bag and start building some confidence again.

It was an odd decision by Oscar - if he missed would they have called advantage still? Can never seem to get my head around their interpretation of that rule.

it came off the side of his boot and snuck through, but it was pretty low percentage. Good thing Oscar has the midas touch

The decision to take the kick is the decision to take advantage. The outcome is irrelevant
