Positives and Negatives vs Geelong

Very pleased with Scott Selwood's couple of weeks. His main focus seems tackle & pressure which are his best attributes.
Ive been a huge critic of Scooter over the years, its possible he needed a rocket up his backside to get going. If he thinks he may not be an automatic pick each week then he may give us more...he has more to give and I don't think we have seen anywhere near his best yet.

Has merit.

Recruit the surrogates from the Orioles and other high performance athletes.

Do a trade with Brittany Griner/Glory Johnson (great name) in the WNBA. 200cm Shuey/Duggans running around dominating the sporting world in two countries. :thumbsu:

Kept him to 1 goal against the Hawks in 2012 as well (although to be fair it was 1.6).

eMac had nearly 30 touches that game though

The ball went to them a heap Nd eMac got the better of it

Thought of that game on the weekend due to goal kicking - we kicked 5 goals 21 that day.. Luckily the Hawks were just as bad

Biggest positives for me are;
1. Pressure being applied to the ball carrier and ball around the ground.
2. Quick and direct hand balls & kicking in general play - we seemed to have 'lost' the 'air balls'
3. Team effort - number of passengers are few and far between.
4. Run and carry & overlap out of the back line is opening up the opposition and getting the ball quicker into out forward line.
5. Fewer fumbles across the ground - hands are much cleaner this year.

Pretty much sums it up for me..Team defense and pressure in waves is impressive to watch
Plus the noticeable improvement in so many players.

Which is why I would prefer West Coast developed players to play multiple roles. I know it's the more it changes the more it stays the same but a player who can play multiple roles offer flexibility ahead of one player who can play one role. It can't hurt to add a few strings to the bow if for anything but preparedness.
Isn't schofield playing this role already showing flexibility. FYI he wasn't playing as a kpd in the past.

McGovern doesn't have the condition to play on the big talls, he would get smashed. Playing schoey and having McGovern float across and take interceptions marks is playing to the strengths of our depleted defence and I don't see us changing that.

Got to think this role is only going to improve Schofield next season, when he'll be monitoring the third forward and still being able to go for a run.

McGovern takes the KPF inside the defensive 50 and switches with Schofield who is better suited to track the KPF roaming outside the defensive 50. That would be my ideal flexible set-up but that also requires excellent communication between Schofield and McGovern. There is the possibility that they're simply not ready to do that.

I remember feeling utter despair seeing Wellingham playing on Zac Clark in the NAB cup, thinking that the season was over if this was going to be our best option for the year. But wow, what a fantastic decision by the coaches to persevere with him down back. Possibly playing more consistent footy than he ever did at Collingwood. So many good things to take out of this game, but I'm still blown away by how useful he's made himself to the team.

Hawkins kicked 3 goals for the game:

First - lead out mark. Schofield was caught up in block from McGovern/Kersten which allowed the space. The runner then gifted a 50m penalty.
Second - Schofield on not on gound for whatever reason, Hawkins sits on Butler's shoulders.
Third - Hawkins has Schofield in front on the left, ball is kicked behind on right. 95% of AFL standard tall defenders would have had no chance, and it didn't really matter that it was Hawkins big ass in the way.

So the positive is that when faced with a gorilla forward, we're not allowing the 1 on 1 strength marking contests to eventuate. I reckon Skuzza is doing a great job so far.

On the third one, the other Geelong player (can't remember who it was) used his body well to block Bennell (?) into Schoey as well to get some space for Hawkins. Was just good forward play.

Agreed. The big problems on all 3 Hawkins goals were that they came off a turnover, meaning there was lots of space in teh forward line, and the player who delivered it had time and space to put it in the best spot. That's why Simmo has been saying the onus for defence is on the midfield.
Which was one of the positives to Emac going down that I raised at the time (albeit it was grasping at straws for a positive).

Emac is such a good wrestling type backman that I reckon we just relied on him to neutralise those sorts of contests that Schofield lost.

Now that we don't have that luxury, i reckon it's brought out the best in the rest of the team, learning they all have to chip in re: defensive pressure

Did anybody see Natanui's centre tap to the wingman. Now that's just showing off!

Seriously his tap work is exquisite especially at centre bounces.

Long time lurker here. Desperate to find footage of that spoil by Hurn that clobbered Selwood on the defensive 50 - can anyone hook a brother up?
