Although it wouldn't provide the coverage of Vic Park some shade sails across the eastern side terrace would be a good start.

There planning on playing games there during the season so at a minimum you think they need some stepped concrete terraces undercover, a bit like those in the outer at Casey.

Um score? And to everyone else stop fking whinging about the ground. You know what you get so suck it up Nancy

Um, it was the first time I've been to the ground since the Glass house section opened and the first time I've watched footy there in any capacity. While I thought it wouldn't have the amenities of Vic Park I at least expected a little bit of shade or shelter.

The Werribee Hacks where trying to do that the Whole Time he was out there
Didn't have it all his own way, but that's OK. His body was tested by the Werribee players and he survived the test for three quarters before he came off. Different story next week against the Doggies where Treloar will have protection with Crisp, Adams and Greenwood joining him around the ball.

Re the amenities, there is a large elevated section of concrete steps/seats/terraces on the east side of the ground. For the intraclub match, and the one in 2015, the club had an awning installed over the terraces (bit like a giant sail cloth). They should have done the same thing today, and for the VFL games this year, as the ground definitely needs some protection for fans. It cant be that difficult to arrange, and to make it permanent. Then it will be very similar to the Casey ground.

Re a larger and more permanent stand, there may be opportunity for this in the east or south-east of the ground. It would need the permission of the Melbourne & Olympic Park Trust, who manage Olympic Park (it's crown land), but they OK'd the new Glasshouse. There is nowhere else for it, as the north side is too skinny being very close to Swan Street/Olympic Boulevard, and the west side has the Holden Centre.

Re the previous grandstands, i.e. the old Olympic Park stands, these had to come down to make room for the MCG sized oval. The old Olympic Park was a running track, with stands on both sides. It simply wasn't big enough to work as a footy oval, hence the removal of the old stands.

They already have them, 2 lots of concrete steps in the outer. On the night of the intra club they set up sail coverage out there, didn't have it today. Add the grass mounds around the ground, the glasshouse viewing area (200-300 people raised) and it's not much worse off then say Williamstown's home ground.

There's 2 issues, the sun and rain. There's no shelter so any wet day is going to cause issues or see no/little crowd attending. Personally I can handle getting wet, but I can't handle getting burnt.

In terms of the sun a quick look at the fixture shows one game at 11.45 and the others at either 4pm or 5.15. The 5.15pm games might be ok, but the 11.45 and first half of the 4pm games will have issues if it's a sunny day. The only shade provided isn't by design rather it's just a slither provided by the building.
How did people watch footy in the old days pre stands etc? Mind boggles

The set up is great for us

Grandstands have been around for a while SV. We had a stand in the very early days at Vic Park, and several within a couple of years of our club's launch. Elevated viewing areas (hills, mounds, etc) have also been around for ever. Fans want to see the game!

The elevations were the key.
Flemington had those and even stands 150 years ago.
100,000! Went to the 1880 Melbourne Cup.
Lovely mounds and slopes gave good views even then.

You stood on your carton of beer and got progressively shorter as the game went on.
Fantastic.
And no screens either in yesteryear.

Yep the first grandstand at Vic Park was built in 1892, a good history here http://www.victoriapark.net.au/2.html Of the current stands the Ryder stand was completed in 1929 and the Rush stand in 1966.

People also weren't concerned about skin cancer either.

Only the fly screen on the clubhouse door
Fly screen, such an Australan thing too.
I did a new fly wire the other day, tricky thing too

Which is why I hate cats - bloody things using the fly screens as a ladder!
I love cats, low maintenance, great companions, friendly, catch mice
