VFL Practice Match #1 - Collingwood vs Werribee at Olympic Park Oval (Pies WON 67-57, Treloar survived!)

I know this was a practice match so they may have something lined up for the regular season. But they need to provide more shelter from the weather. That should be easy to implement on game day. Whey really need a temporary stand for fans to sit in to watch the match, but I don't know how feasible that is.

If they can't think of a way to improve the viewing experience, I fear fans quickly will be put off going to the VFL. Which is a shame given the Vic Park matches seem to be getting more popular year by year.

I think they originally said 60-80 mins game time? Probably figure he's done enough in 3 quarters there's no point in risking him getting injured in the final term by Werribee hacks trying to be big men by roughing him up.

The Werribee Hacks where trying to do that the Whole Time he was out there

Agree. Not Really enjoyable to watch Footy there

When they hold VFL matches there, is there a gate that you go through as I am presuming the change may be due to paying to watch the game where as Vic Park is free?

Although it wouldn't provide the coverage of Vic Park some shade sails across the eastern side terrace would be a good start.

Though most VFL Regular Season games be in the Evening and played under lights

Good idea. At the moment the majority of fans are going to be miserable if it's raining. Which is highly likely on a winter evening in Melbourne

Treloar must have dominated at this level.

Just got home, was actually a pretty high quality game for an opening practice match, no doubt due to the history between the two in finals.

A short review of the standout players.

7; That Treloar bloke; Played the first three quarters, I'd say 80% of that time. Showed his ability to win clearances carrying 2-3 Werribee players on his back at one point. Just all class and is a bull. His kicking wasn't perfect today but for a first hitout he was impressive in patches.
11; M.Alessi; Did a few nice things, including setting up a goal. He showed some toughness and ability to win the ball, and some class. What he said....

14; Will Knight; Has to be VFL listed tomorrow, was close to best on ground for us, is a lovely long kick and takes a nice mark.

39; BEN CROCKER; Story of the day for mine, wow why did every club pass on this kid so much? Elite TAC Cup forward and he showed it today. Knows how to use the body, is a lovely kick and can take a mark. We've stolen one here. Will play senior footy this year.

47; Darrean Wyatt; If you're comparing him to Mason Cox, both ex basketballers turned to football, he's well ahead of where Mason was in game 1, year 1. Took a few contested marks but most impressive piece of play was taking on his opponent and running around him on the outer side. Has huge potential, I'd say more so as that second ruck/forward.

Ben Moloney, Matheson, Borthwick, Close and Howe had big impacts on the game too as they usually do in the VFL.

Was a good start for the boys.

There's 2 issues, the sun and rain. There's no shelter so any wet day is going to cause issues or see no/little crowd attending. Personally I can handle getting wet, but I can't handle getting burnt.

In terms of the sun a quick look at the fixture shows one game at 11.45 and the others at either 4pm or 5.15. The 5.15pm games might be ok, but the 11.45 and first half of the 4pm games will have issues if it's a sunny day. The only shade provided isn't by design rather it's just a slither provided by the building.

Those 4pm & 5pm games on a sunny day won't be great either. The intra club game was terrible to watch on the Eastern side of the ground until the sun went down

Some sort of hat might be in order...

Quick views on the match

Treloar - a class above, agree with mattys123 he's a bull, but he's also very smart. Often took the game and opponents on and ran around them.

Golds - in and out of the match, but did some nice things and generally seemed pretty clean with his hands and disposals.

Crocker - smart forward who gets in good positions and uses his body well for a smaller bloke, albeit he got penalised on one occasion for a Rocca/Cloke like push.

Wyatt - showed promise up forward and in the ruck. A couple of nice marks and a good leap when in the ruck. Also gave off a neat handball that resulted in a goal. Has more to work with than some other cat b rookies.

of the VFL players I liked the performances of

Alessi - took the game on and has some serious toe

Knight - was one the vfl list last year, but first time I've seen him. Midfielder type, strong and took some nice marks at both ends

Close - played further up the ground and had lengthy stints in the ruck. Still a rake, but looks to have improved on last season

Borthwick - only played the second half, but got some important clearances

Howe - liked his ruck work, quite mobile

Hore - played mostly as a tall defender, took some important intercept marks

Won't be sunny for much longer. This is unseasonally hot for March.
