Barlow has got to play in the midfield at bounce downs regularly ,he was a champ there when Harvey was coaching , I don't understand Lyons reluctance to play him there. In the undermanned side that played Port , he was put in the midfield and stared as the stats below vindicate. Play him there and we will do a whole lot better in centre clearances and stoppages. Move Suban /MDB to the forward line or better still replace one of them with a decent player.

depending on conditions/matchups and injury the only possible ins are Mcpharlin and Taberner. Outs will be most likely Mzungu and c.Pearce. they wont risk Griffin by the sounds of it. also Mcpharlin seems unlikely. We are going to need a tremendous team effort to get out of a prelim. remain pessimistic

Given our early season form, honestly thought it was better for him to retire. But with Ross bringing back the tagging role, it's time for the king to return.

I dont think he will still even be 100 % in 2 weeks hes carrying a injury that requires lots of rest to get right another 2 weeks i think he will be about 80 % fit

Ross said on 6PR tonight that Fyfe was fine, in great spirits at the club this morning and would definitely train this week. He also said that if we was not OK, they would have him in a bed behind a curtain not hanging out at coffee shops in a moon boot and crutches.

Who really knows as at this time of the year, everyone is playing smoke and mirrors. But if Freo's conditioning staff and medicos got Fyfe up for the qualifying final - and he played better than he's played for most of the second half of the season - I guess we can have faith that they will get him up again.

One thing I'm not sure about is whether activity sets back the recovery time? In other words, does the clock for his recovery time reset after Saturday's qualifying final to requiring another 4 weeks or will the next 2 weeks of rest and treatment he'll get until the preliminary final be added on to the 3 weeks he had already had since he suffered the injury? Would be great to get some insight from someone who would know the answer to this.

Not according to Lyon. He indicated that he had a slight calf complaint. Seems more likely than not that McPharlin will be right for the prelim unless he has another set back.

In my medical opinion and my basic understanding of periostitis, the most likely scenario is that the initial rest would have helped reduce some of the inflammation of the periosteum...But, the return to full activity likely would have aggravated the inflammation again :( The next 2 weeks off likely will be aimed at reducing the inflammation again (hence the load reduction, lack of training and the moon boot), so that by PF time, his pain has reduced enough for him to play. With this type of inflammation, I dont think he will be back to 100% fit until after the pre-season next year as time and rest are the best healers. He will have to likely expect to play with pain for the rest of the season. The risk of this, is that the periostitis leads to micro-fractures....again, this is not really acute, rather a chronic injury that results from repetitive stress. i would think that during the off season, Fyfe will spend a lot of time with a biomechancial specialist to figure out what the cause of the added stress load is...wrong boots? Flat feet? poor running style?
Freo could also ask the Domain staff to NOT mow the oval for a few weeks...get it softer for him :)

Not sure if Griff is going to get back in

Lyon hinted Matt Taberner was a strong chance of returning to the side after a five-goal haul for Peel on Sunday.

He said when “going really well” the forward line consisted of Taberner, Zac Clarke, Pavlich, Chris Mayne, Hayden Ballantyne and Michael Walters.

we can only hope by saying that RTB is only trying to up Clarke's trade value.

That's a big blow.. I really believe the Griffin/Sandilands combo is vital to our finals campaign.

A fit and firing forward half that we had the first 8/10 rounds is what we need.Tabs and Clarke playing well was an important part.Since Clarke has lost form Griff coming in hasn't improved the situation .We need Clarke to find that early season form and Tabs to help out Pav.

I honestly think that Matt Taberner is the key to the premiership lock.
In: Tabs, Griffin, Macca
Out: Gu, Clarke, Clancee
Hopefully both McPharlin and Griffin will be right for the prelim, but you can't rush injuries, so we'll just have to wait and see. Suban had a horrible game, but I have faith he'll get back on track against Adelaide/Hawthorn.
Also Christ I hope it isn't forecasted to rain, but even if it does we have to back Tabs in, he will know how important his contribution is.

You might be right. I think across 3 games earlier in the year Tabs and Clarke had kicked something like 12 goals between each other - it's just that as Clarke's dropped off Griffin's come in and kicked 7 goals in 7 games; which is pretty much what you'd hope for your second ruck. With Clarke at his best though he offers that extra dimension and he's got 4 solid training sessions to prove his worth.

What quarter did Taberner get his goals? He gets subbed off every AFL game by mid third quarter
Pretty sure he got 3 in the third and 2 in the fourth, most of them were made from contested marks inside 50 from what I remember, he kicked very straight as well. Good signs.
Edit; what makes this even more impressive is that Peel only had 9 goals for the game with the forward line having limited opportunities.

im sorry if I piss people off with my dawson hating, but seriously he cant handball or kick the ball without making a total mess of it, he either handballs to a team mate who is in more pressure than he is or he kicks straight to the opposition or does some kind of horrible kick along the ground. Stopping people from kicking goals is only 1 part of been a defender that's the only thing he gets close to doing right and even than he ***** that up and his opponent kicks a crucial goal. So I feel I am completely justified to call him a massively useless player

I completely agree and don't understand why the hell people think he is a decent player. Seriously bad under pressure and just holds onto a player when it's bombed in 1 v 1 giving away free kicks. When the ball comes in fast he just jogs behind the opposition player who just takes the mark. You know he's bad when everyone knows he doesn't like to kick the ball, wtf is that it's football

Dawson is one of the best one on one defenders in the comp.Holds the big forwards to a minimum of goals. With Luke now a week to week proposition and Johnno not a lock down defender tell me who would you play on the big key forwards. Tell me one forward who has kicked a bag on him.
Luke,Johnno ,Ibbo and the rest of the defenders play better and walk taller when he is out there. Freo held Sydney to a minimum score for a reason. The defence was on top. If A Pearce had of played on Tippet the result would have been different.

Tabs has to play.

Whether it's the Hawks or the Crows, it would be silly to play Pav as our sole tall (Clarke isn't a forwards a-hole).

We've seen Hawthorn chop us up rebounding from aerial contests in the past. Taberner would at least keep one of Lake or Gibson away from playing third man up/intercept marker.

Likewise, although Adelaide don't have tall intercept players, I really rate Talia's defensive game. It'd be a big ask for Pav to win that battle on his own. Hartigan is an honest toiler but we at least need to keep him away from double teaming Pav, Tabs can do that.

Dawson has the odd brain fade but he does a really good job most weeks (bit like Tanner really). One of the goals tippett got on the lead in front of goal was mostly because Clarke didn't fill the hole. He went to get in front of the leading player going to the flank + Dawson temporarily dozed off.

Dawson temporarily dozes off all the time at least 5 times a game and when he does have the ball more often than not it goes straight to the opposition
