Giro was the most impressive in the Peel game but be prepared to also be frustrated. He just grabbed the ball and kicked it long at every opportunity and rarely looked for a target. I think that is a massive weakness at AFL level
So he already understands the freo game plan

I think that was more a product of where he was getting the ball, our inside mids we being dominated so he wasn't receiving much ball in space. When your most outside mid, the one with often no handball option, has no space the only option is to bomb or get caught.

Thoughts on Daw? Been decent in his stint as a backman but I don’t know if he has an obvious matchup this week

Is playing his role nicely in the most effective defence in the league. Is good to have as the second ruck when Goldy needs a spell.

hey mate haven't really seen a lot of North this year personally. Daw as a backmen seems to be a good move from what I understand, just wondering how tightly he plays? As in, has he been dropping off/intercept marking much or mainly sticking to a forward? The Intercept markers are REALLY killing us this year, but not sure we have a forward that he would be a good match for since Tabs has gone out.

Zones off to hit contests as an intercept marker or spoiler.

Can be exploited with a mismatch and fast quality delivery but the North defence is very well led and marshalled and such a mismatch is quickly identified.

The fact that the midfield is a lot stronger defensively this year certainly helps.

Jones is so much better than Hannath in every aspect. He's a better ruckman and has much better hands than Hannath. Jones is a very strong and underrated mark. He is slow though so i'll give you that;). I rate Apeness too but his lack of fitness and football is really showing.

Jones is worth persisting with, but IMO will never be that big goal kicking ruck we all want.
if Scott jones becomes another jono griffin, I could live with that. Griffin wasn't the greatest ruckman in our team, but he was something reliable to fall back on when sandi was injured

Expect him to have a big impact this week then.

His run and spread is surprisingly good for a big man, splits packs and good skills. They don’t have him rucking much cause they want to see his craft i50.

Apeness is shot.
His speed over 20metres when rested is decent for a big man. His run and spread in a game is far from good.

We need another tall but the cupboard is bare. Tabs, Darcy, Dixon injured, Nads getting better but needs another season in WAFL, Apeness needs another half season in WAFL coming off his long lay off.

MJ is looking a liability these days in defence. Would actually favour playing Kersten in his role and putting MJ forward as a stopgap for now. Only other option
is maybe playing Jones forward and 2nd ruck.

Other than that, Giro could be a chance and hopefully S Hill is available.

So you're telling us he'll get kicks at AFL level?

Has our bottom 4 covered if that's the case!

Tarrant and Thompson usually take the best two talls. Thompson will take the more mobile of the two.

Majak takes the third dangerous tall forward, if there is no obvious 3rd tall forward, we usually play a 7 man defence and Majak will play the loose man down in the hole in front of the #1 forward and down the line in contested situations at CHB. He's been playing a similar role to how West Coast use McGovern.

He's 10 x the player in defence than what he was as a forward. He doesn't have to think to much, the other forwards generally lead him to the ball so he is in the play more as a backman, but he's always been an elite contested mark, a very good kick, athletically very hard to mark on because of his size, speed and ability to spoil. Makes him a very unique intercept defender.

He's top 10 in the league in contested marks and only slightly behind Brown in this regard, ahead of Waite, Tarrant and Ziebell. He's a big reason our defence has been so dominant this year.

I imagine Thompson will go to McCarthy and Tarrant and Daw will swap between the loose man role.

My favourite part of this is that Nads is mentioned. He is one of the token names at the bottom who aren't really in the mix (especially given the weather) but at least he is getting closer. Keep kicking goals and competing in the ruck Nads and you'll get a game!

We have to roll the dice this weekend and field another tall - it’s got to be Strnadica, Apeness or Kersten (not in defence). My money is on Nads.

If we fail to do this then the club is failing to act. We can’t do another weekend of Cox spending half his time in the ruck and McCarthy (yet again) wrestling the best defender after we long bomb it into the forward line repeatedly.

I don't think it is that extreme but I certainly don't think it would hurt to get a genuine tall in. Having said that, if it is wet then I wouldn't be throwing Nads to the wolves. Kersten would be a better bet in the wet I think.

We should grubber kick every i50 and see how we go winning our share of ground ball. Our total marks inside 50 usually are less that the opposition leading intercept mark.

sit Strnadica at full forward play cox CHF and free McCarthy up abit by a pocket or flank

Free McCarthy to play at Peel.

All he's capable of is leading up and taking a mark if we win the ball on turnover.

McCarthy and Tucker are my whipping boys. If they can't show anything this season then it's safe to say they will be forever Suban/Sheridan types. Couldn't be more disappointed in both of them.

Can’t agree on Tucker. He’s come on a lot this year.

Huh? when?

He still can't find the ball on the outside and on the inside he's just painful to watch. He just looks to get on his left and has zero awareness of what's going on around him. Nothing annoys me more when all he has to do is look right or move right and he's not capable of doing it. I won't get into his lack of speed or marking. He isn't even a one trick money. He did get 8 tackles on the weekend so at least he has a go I guess.

I voiced a similar opinion on Tucker before season but he like Cam have not played enough to be able to write the off yet. Especially Cam because
a) He is a KPP and they take time
b) Has shown in the past is capable of kicking goals when played in his appropriate position.

Tucker needs to stop taking the safe option. Needs to crack in and hit the contest hard. If he fully commits to the spoil, mark or tackle he may risk losing his feet or getting caught outta position but atleast he had a go. Its gotta be between the ears. Maybe he just needs to feel like his spot in the team is safe and he belongs?

Atleast mccarthy is marking out on the lead this year which is an improvement. Hes never gonna take the big grabs he doesnt have the hands. He will get better when tabs or darcy return. In the meantime he needs to work on his set shots from 15 m out. Hes missed some doozeys.

I somewhat agree. He will play well and kick goals if we are a great team. We also need to probably have two quality talls up forward. With that all said I think Kersten and other spuds could play well with that set up too.
