I was all for Nankervis being selected over Milera for Rd 1, but Milera was better today than the stats give him credit for. Arguably the most solid player DEFENSIVELY that we had out there today other than Michalanney.

Unless injuries are a factor, I think either one of these options is really the only way to go vs Essendon:

1)
Unchanged 23
Draper into the 22
Curtin sub

Or

2)
Out: Curtin
In: Nankervis
Draper into the 22
Sub: one of Nankervis, Sholl, Cumming or Peatling
Yep any talk about dropping Milera is just ridiculous

Ridiculous because it won’t happen, but not ridiculous due to performance

Milera wasn’t bad today - he did what he needed to do

But I’m in the Nank camp - I just feel that Nank is a more pro-active player, he looks to get involved more

Kick it 6 times and have 78 metres gained?? Cripes, low bar.

Not sure why he has become a new whipping boy but after a year out of the game that was a perfectly fine comeback game
I’m not putting him down and i actually don’t mind him, but saying Dawson should drop out is ridiculous because of the performance he put up, saying milera could be replaced is not a ridiculous assertion.
There’s usually a reason why players become whipping boys though.

Milera might be the new whipping boy because today's game was basically what he has done his entire career. It was not a good first game back (it was everyone's first game back, not like you bank form from August.) He was his usual 13-16 possession self.

100 games - 2 Brownlow votes (two 1 vote games). Not sure what people are waiting for. He is who he is. He is never going to be N W-M

As I said I prefer Nank because he is more proactive - I’ve been on the Nank ahead of Milera train all pre-season

The issue is that we were dominant across the ground so Milera will get a pass mark for playing his role - whereas if Nank played I’m sure he would have had more of an impact

That was my point

I think we'll give him a week or 2 more in the hope he improves.

I'm not super bothered by that as such, but we've got depth so he'll need to

Most here have been so focussed on this whole Nank over Milera thing in recent days. Like obsessionally.

OK let me watch the replay - always enjoyable even if skipping at 2 or 3x speed for 50% of the game - and will respond to you Gents further.

Clearly the coaching panel - Head Coach, Coaching Director and Backline Coach collectively feel Milera>Nank
at this stage as a hbf. This is inarguable. I tend to agree with them but accept the majority on here don’t agree. Time will ultimately prove things up.

Agreed, Whipping boys come about through continued unwarranted selected. That fits Milera being selected this week.

Isaac Cumming perhaps, if we are managing him a bit early in the year

Absolutely not

I think Keays could be a good sub.

A genuine injection of creativity against Essendon late in the game could be in inspired move.

Still reckon he is important and is coming off a B&F

I'd be happy to see Sholl sub and Curtin up on the wing

Ignoring for a moment the question of who gets dropped, who are the players who realistically have "earned" an AFL selection?

Nankervis, Bond and Taylor are presumably the next in line. Each of those three "deserves" to be playing AFL footy, but are currently being held out by other options.

Obviously Butts and Borlase can both play, but will only get a look if one of our KPDs goes down. Likewise, McAndrew is the break-glass ruck option, and Burgess the break-glass KPF option.

That then leaves Pedlar, Dowling, Berry, Schoenberg, Cook and Smith as depth options who could realistically come in and play, with Ryan, Edwards and T. Murray as potential debutants. Hard to see any of them playing AFL footy unless injuries come along.
