Ratten To Be Sacked

B+ coaches have a space in the AFL. They may never win a flag but will put a club back into top 4.

Little battler clubs like ST Kilda and Port should know their ****ing role. It's not to win cups it's to be sustainable long term and not fold.

The arrogance by St kilda is full display.

Yeah ratten needs another shot probably at Gws/GCS

Not sure about the unluckiest altogether, but he’s been stiffed here. The overrating of the list today was unbelievable, the Saints lack stars & are a middle of the table list, exactly where they finished! And tbh finals were in their control until Max King decided to scatter his goal kicking everywhere in Round 22, that’s hardly on Ratten…

He's picked some poorly administered clubs to be at. Both times the lists have fallen apart salary and quality wise.
I agree with this, the Carlton list back at that time was nowhere near the quality of the Pies, Cats, Saints & Hawks of that era. He did what I thought was an adequate job making finals a few years in a row. One year being stiff not to make a Prelim I might add. Now history has repeated with the Saints, it’s simply not close to a Premiership squad.

I'm all for respecting Ratts, but what does Malthouse have to do with anything?
Hold on was that Malthouse that last coached carlton to a final win? i guess that was when you finished 9th?
Sorry very long time ago, my memory is not so good sadly :$

Brett Ratten is one of the luckiest coaches this century.

He was a suburban coach, at Norwood in the EFL with half a year as assistant at Melbourne before that. He then got handed the Carlton job by his mate Stephen Kernahan and his incompetant, bumbling administration. He then got gifted a generational player in Chris Judd, who carried the team on his own back to respectable levels. He then got the lemon and sars because he was a bog average coach.

He then got a gig, on the back of Clarko taking him on with a readymade elite team, by another incompetant outfit in StKilda FC. He lasted 4 years there before getting the lemon and sars again for being a bog average coach.

He has got 8 years pay as a Senior AFL Coach with bog average ability.

Kudos to him. He has done well with his luck to fulfil his goal twice and get paid handsomely for it.

The lovefest for him has always been about his tremendously sad personal loss.

Takes from the press conference
1. St Kilda believe that list underperformed, inconstant, and unprofessional
2. Ratten's leadership style wasn't demanding enough
3. The processes for success was faulty

Here is my take
1. The list is workmanlike and lack talent/skill.
2. Lethlean shows the dark triad and he is totally self-important, lacks empathy and is a snake.
3. The list was constructed by Lethlean and he is blaming the coach for his mistakes.

The only person that needs to be sacked is Lethlean.

It’s delusional, Saints might be the team furthest from a flag in the comp.

Nowhere near contending, can’t bring in talent because no one wants to go there.

They will plug along for the next 2-3 years finishing anywhere from 6-12. Never being the worst but nowhere near the best.

It’s ****ing embarrassing.

Ratten made the fall guy. List management has been horrendous.

Have paid absolutely exorbitant rates for 3 very average players.
Horrendous may be being too kind. It's literally been about as bad as it could be without deliberately trying to be ineffective. Everyone responsible for list management and recruiting the last 5-10 years at St Kilda needs to go.

Having a realist view of the player list is important to make the right decisions going forward.

St Kilda after Lyon never really had a real direction. Partly going to the draft and partly topping up. That approach has left them in the middle of the pack.

Made the finals twice in 11 years. Never ever recovered after Ross Lyon left, and some Saints fans still blame him for losing two grand finals.

Staggering.

Brett Ratten has been ruthlessly sacked as coach twice and been made a scapegoat on both occasions. First at Carlton which was ironically almost exactly 10 years ago and now at St Kilda.

His results at both clubs were average without being spectacular, but there's been many coaches who have performed at the same level or worse yet been allowed far more slack.

Examples such as:

Hardwick in his first seven years.
Buckley between 2014 and 2017.
Dew during his whole coaching tenure to date.
Alan Richardson throughout his entire tenure.
Brad Scott during most of his tenure at North.
Hinkley between 2015 and 2019.

That's just off the top of my head but I'm sure there's more.

In my opinion, Brett Ratten is the unluckiest/most hard done by coach in recent times, especially given the fact he's been unfairly shafted not once, but twice.

Would you agree?
Great call on Dew.

Ratten pushes hard for this exact type of recruiting. He got about $3 million dollars spent for him for a nice initial sugar hit. Then it all went to shizen as every outsider knew.

WTAF are you on about?

Unless you have behind-the-scenes intel on all the leading available candidates you’re really just guessing I reckon.

Still seem to be some very viable options though, in Yze, Buckley, Pyke, Leppitsch and even old mate RTB.
Well you know my personal preference then !

Shouldn’t the list manager call it out though?

The List Manager and Ratts were on the same page. The AFL were also no doubt pushing hard for the massively in debt club to do a quick fix to get memberships back up and bums on seats. Which all came to nought because of Covid anyway.

But just on Ratts, he has always been a "for now" coach. He hasn't, and never has had, the ability to be a patient coach or anything other than a superficial AFL level coach.

He has done extremely well to be employed, and paid for 8 years, by 2 bumbling administrations.

Those three potatoes brought in are reprehensible decisions

A waste of time, draft picks and money

Total debacle
