Ill accept a different order from the umps but not different names.
Quite comfortable with seeing Walsh or Cripps in the umps votes, they were huge.

A question. Given we’ve given away Butler and Higgins, who comes in now as a small pressure forward if one of our lads loses form ?(I’m looking at you Daniel.........). Is MRJ ready?

A couple of observations last night. Caddy’s lack of speed a worry, Pickett’s pressure and ability to close space is sensational - picked himself for next game. And does anyone else think the game looks more like basketball? A lot of end to end fast break stuff last night (and cudos to Teague - they were well set up for this) with a spare well forward of the ball and wide to create repeated outlets. It was pretty bruise free footy and I hope it returns to the more contested style we love (and SHocking hates.........😬).
Caddy was ok first half but he couldn’t run out the game. His speed/ endurance will always be a concern but he does have class. I’m happy to continue with him until Ralphsmith, Martyn etc demand selection.
MRJ just needs the miles in his legs, patience there
Thought our small forwards were ok last night. They have that defensive role that underpins our game plan. Like the fact that Bolton Edwards and Lambert are all capable small forwards

Jack Graham is WAY leaner. He will elevate big time this year.
Nank was very, very effective in the ruck. His tap work was A1. If someone could get that one down to Bolton in a gif.....
Balta. Can you believe this kid?
Lambert back doing Lambert things.

And yeah, that No. 4 might have a future, looks promising.

Was at the game way up on Level 4: Amazing how different the game looked to me (compared to most posters) from way up there- and how different it looked being at the ground vs watching only on TV for a year.

I thought Carlton made us look slow for 3 quarters, absolutely smashed us on transition from their halfback to forward - their handball chains and ability to create a loose man had us cold. We had no answer. I honestly think if they hadn’t had those brain fades in the 3rd quarter they would have beaten us. I think the we had a bit of an escape.

The other thing a I noticed was how many of our tackles didn’t stick- and how many times we didn’t keep our feet in contests (and they did)- which time and again allowed them to run off from the contest and create their chains..
I don’t know what boots we were wearing but we seemed to slip over a lot more than them.

Everyone is lauding Dusty’s game so I must be wrong - but from where I sat he tried to do too much and butchered an awful lot of kicks. He had impact due to weight of possession and the odd good thing but it wasn’t his best game.
The forward line was totally dysfunctional: and only Jack playing a traditional lead up FF gave us anything that had any appearance of system.

But whatever- we won ! And it was just great to be back at the footy. The kids and I had a ball supporting our tigers. I really enjoyed the speed of the game- it actually took me back to watching games at VFL park in the 70’s - and if this style of match becomes the norm- the long lost traditional big lead up FF will be back in town.

What a night, the atmosphere was fantastic especially during the flag unfurlings and the song was sung like 100k were there.

Positives:
Graham looked as fit as he ever has, covered the ground with ease and helped cover for the loss of Cotchin. Plays like this all year, and he'll be top 5 in the B&F.

Bolton standout in the middle with his evasiveness in traffic. Which allowed us to use Edwards in other roles as the night wore on.

:goat: how good was it to see him in Norm Smith form to start the season. If you're a gambler get on him for the Brownlow before his odds drop.

Balta aka Rance v2.0 started a bit slowly but as the game wore on he displayed more and more Rance type traits and his efforts in getting a couple of stops in when the Blues looked sure to score were immense.

Negatives:
Vlastuin getting injured when we're likely to lose Astbury to suspension isn't ideal.

Astbury his brain fade will cost him at least a week. Was stupid and uncalled for.

As for Carlton I like their bookends in Weitering and McKay, they can build around them. Walsh & Cripps needs some younger players to step up in the middle to help them.

Changes:
Out: Vlastuin (inj) Astbury (susp)
In: Cotchin Chol

B: Broad Balta Grimes
HB: Short Pickett Baker
C: KMac Cotchin Caddy
HF: Castagna Lambert Rioli
F: Lynch Martin Riewoldt
R: Nankervis Graham Prestia
INT: Edwards Bolton Ross Chol
EMG: Martyn RCD Ralphsmith Miller

Love his presence of mind to also peel off to one side as he fell so he didn't fall in his back. So many defenders would've just let the momentum carry them that way and give up the free.
The 'accidental' boot to the back of the head topped it off.

Mate, not even salty with this loss. Champion team will always find a way to win I guess.. Dusty was huge but the player that I really think Carlton could not stop was Balta. McKay is no slouch and got to all the right places but Balta found a way to nullify him at critical times.

Umpiring ordinary both ways, we easily won the free kick count and your blokes got some questionable frees at different moments, so it's a non-factor. I really liked what I saw from Carlton but was, as always; impressed by Richmond's ability to find a way to win.
I thought the blues showed a lot of fight last nite and will definitely take a few scalps this year.

Agree. Worst conversion rate I have ever seen from Dusty.
Our tackling was ordinary and it looked like we were playing on an ice rink !!!

The second angle might do him in lmao doesn't look at the ball at all lmao
Should be a week , but won’t be looked at, Tigers player copped it and the press will be on about Arsebury and tiger culture , did you see that prick Tom Morris after the game

Interesting Stat

L. Baker - 0 tackles. But he must have been brushed aside at least 10 times.

Also how good is Houli's Banner holding form to get votes for the match.

Umpires destroyed another good contest.

You’re right mate. 25 frees to 15. Just outrageous the continued raw deal we get to keep lesser teams in the games for longer.

Is it just me or does Pickett give teams looks consistently with ordinary fumbles and turnovers? He seems like he’s prone to consistent brain fades to be honest. I like the good stuff he brings and I didn’t think he was bad last night but there are those moments that I feel happen often.

I also feel like we are going to be about as good as we were in previous years but is it enough to snag another flag? Other teams seem to have added and this year we have kept It the same. I am hoping someone from down below can make a real case for best 22 and give us something a little different. Someone like an MJR would be exciting to introduce although I don’t think it will be happening any time soon. I had hopes for RCD but he seems to have stagnated. Perhaps a Will Martyn or Naish will make a case but I do feel we will need the full brigade this year. With the short rotations and normal quarters again. Long season ahead.

Nah was at the game but if I wasn't I'd switch off when Tom Morris comes on :moustache:

Things I liked

Bolton and Balta have elevated to another level.
Jack Graham is a jet
I like what I saw of Jack Ross
JR8 is there a better reader of the ball than Jack
Dusty will win the Brownlow

Things that worry me
Rioli has peaked
Caddy is too slow and not sure where he fits in this side
Lynch's ability to read the ball is worrying very one dimensional.
JR8 is worth 100 Lynches
