In - Wardlaw, Phillips, Goater, Shiels, Ziebell
Out - Logue (Inj), Simpkin (Inj), Young (Om), Lazarro (Om), Tucker (Om)

FB - Perez - McKay - Ziebell
HB - Goater - Corr - Shiels
C - Scott - Wardlaw - Ford
FOL - Xerri - LDU - McDonald
HF - Thomas - CCJ - Stephenson
FF - Zurhaar - Larkey - Curtis
IC - Phillips - Sheezel - Harvey - Greenwood
SUB - Lazarro

  • McKay to Lewis, Corr to DGB/resting ruck
  • Ziebell only survives due to Logue injury and the fact we are so bare in the back half depth, could play Bergman but would like him to have a run of good games at VFL level before coming back in
  • Shiels to go to a back flank, will give us a good user/decision maker and can do a job on Breust for periods if required
  • McDonald needs a circuit breaker, if they aren’t going to drop him, I want him tagging Day who tore us apart last time we played, don’t get beaten by what you know, if they send him back, have Luke follow him, make him be a non-event
  • What is the best we’ve looked this year? Phillips, Wardlaw and Sheezel in the middle. Why the coaches have gone away from that is f*kn staggering to me, and I’d be going back to it this week + LDU, Thomas. Only players I’d have in at CBA are LDU, Phillips, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Thomas & McDonald (tagging)
  • Greenwood to play as the relief ruck and pressure forward, don’t want him playing midfield and don’t want CCJ going into the ruck as it hurts our structure. Greenwood could play a defensive role on Sicily for periods when down there
  • Laz the sub which is stiff as he was ok but he shouldn’t be getting CBAs given who we have available, good runner is exactly what the sub is for

Confident if we do this we will find ourselves in a position to win the game. Stop failing doing the same thing over and over again…

Could we give Cunners a run?
I thought he played more like his old self yesterday. This is possibly because he has played with Goldy for so long but I thought there was a difference. I am sure others will see it differently. Rest him forward if we have to.

I just want to see effort. Seriously. I don’t give a shit if we lose for the rest of the year, but for the love of god can the team please just put in a bit of effort for 4 qtrs.

North should be made to watch the Giants / Hawks game from start to finish.
You'll see effort there from a young inexperienced Hawthorn. They literally "smashed" the Giants in the middle. Made Green, Kelly, Coniglio and anybody else they chucked in there look like VAFA players in the last q.

I haven't seen an effort from North like that for a long time.

Wed be lucky to get great effort for longer than 10 mins a game lol

Unfortunately, we have the losing culture deeply ingrained into our club ATM.

We swung the axe last week and what did it do?

Interesting stat I've just uncovered.

There are 43 players who have kicked 20 or more goals so far this season.

Referencing just these players, North have the fourth most goals per team (88 from Souv, Sleevo, CZ) The other three teams are Adelaide (128), Brisbane (126), Geelong (105). Adelaide and Brisbane both have had 4 players surpass the 20 goal mark so far.

This tells us two things:

1. These blokes can be/are elite forwards.
2. We need to find more players that can hit this mark, as we rely on these guys for over 50% of our goals.

Hopefully they bring the effort from the 2 weeks prior....

The deck chairs and Titanic references are apt, I think. I don't care anymore about who's in and who's out.

The issue right now is less personnel, and more culture and ethos. The game on the weekend reminded me, in so many ways, of the game on the GC, in Goldie's 300th. Completely flat. Inexplicably pathetic and insipid. There was no backbone and not a single performance stood out.

Effort is the baseline for a professional sports team, and it just wasn't there.

In many ways I'm not a great fan of the term, especially if it means mere 'battling outside our weight division', but geez, we could do with some 'Shinboner Spirit' right now, especially if it means being uncompromisingly competitive, regardless of the situation. Belief in teammates to do their bit. Pride in pulling on the jumper.

None of this seems to exist right now. Too much "just for recreation's sake, to pass the time away" and not enough "North Melbourne boys are hard to beat when they come out to play."

I've little doubt the Clarko situation has been a major factor, both before and during his time off, and I'm concerned this may have permanently damaged the 'halo effect' that we all felt upon his appointment to the role. Will he, and we, ever be able to recapture that sense of hope and genuine belief?

Beyond Clarko, I'm particularly concerned that there may be longer term factors at play and was concerned to hear about a culture of lower standards developing amongst players of an age where they should be setting the standard. It's why I am so critical of McDonalds - both him and the club - for allowing a situation to exist where a player of 'questionable ability' has the mantle of captain. It's a role that should include the capacity to inspire, amongst other things. As it stands, it's the opposite.

...post continued in List Management thread.

There's so much that we need to do to a degree of quality that is out of character for us if we're even gonna be in a position to win in the last quarter. And this has been the case for the whole year.

Limited shitful periods. Shitful moments are ok but how many games have we lost this year thanks to an insipid fifteen/twenty minute period? A fair ****ing few

Wave of emotion/momentum in the fourth quarter that compensates for our lack of fitness

Pressure from midfielders on opposition transitions/forward thrusts

Most dangerous opposition small forward not allowed to do as he pleases

A win is possible but it's like trying to thread a needle whilst blindfolded. We need to have an anomalous performance in so many key areas that the chance of it happening in every key area in the same game is almost zero. Sad, sad state of affairs

Could we give Cunners a run?
Absolutely we could/should

We got smoked by the Hawks for clearances last time. They’re too quick to play Cunnington.
Even more reason to play him. Just looked at the stats for that game & the Hawks did kill us in clearances but it would have been a lot worse without Ben

We got belted in the centre last week against a pretty average Geelong midfield & with Simpkin out, I’d like to see Ben back in.
He played well in the 2’s this week & would give team morale a bit of a boost to have our spiritual leader back out there.

Tell you what, the players better come out breathing fire after being called “weak” on classified.

Need to find the way to bring the Sydney and Essendon games effort for the next 3 weeks and beyond. Especially this week.
