I don't get the controversy with the deliberate rushed behind call ? he ran backwards towards goal had a teammate there to handball to or miles of space to kick it out and wanted the behind. If one of our defenders did it all oppos would say it's a good fair call
Yeah I dont get it. He had plenty of time to dispose of it but decided not to. Is that not exactly what the rule was brought in for?

100%, people that don’t think it’s a deliberate free don’t have a clue. A similar one was payed against Phil Davis last week, you don’t get the option to rush the behind when you’ve had time to look at your possible outlets and decide that you don’t want to take them.

#eco , not for anything the Tigers have done, but this season is so crap, doesn't feel right.

In saying that Rioli deserves a Roast.

He should not be gifted games, so bloody lazy.

Needs to be dropped for minimum 5 games, and not allowed back until he proves he is ready.

Our biggest issue is our forward line not functioning , but even not working hard enough. We are currently last for inside 50 tackles last !!! that is one important stat in our game plan.Needs to be fixed the forward line.Poor delivery is also a issue to.

Another issue is that we a not coping with teams flooding against us and extra man in defence.Dimma noted this coaching needs to rectify it.Most games we lead inside forward 50 against teams ,but 3 games this year we have kicked 4,5,5 goals that's poor.
Yeah it’s almost like no sides have ever tried to flood us before which is hard to believe
That tackling stat is poignant one as it tells work rate of our smalls
Jacks form is a worry , first signs of an ageing player are they lose overhead marking ability , he has clunked very few marks , very few and also not finding much of the footy perhaps his wheels are slowing down
Listen he may make a fool of this come out and kick 5-6 but the signs aren’t great

Yyeah ... Our wingers have been flying this year  But the 3 million dollar question (brandos contract). Will be....HOW to wipe the smile off Brandos face, while he shows his old tiger mates in and around all the Goldy and Brissie cafe's, beaches and golf courses over the next few months. ;)

I prefer to macca to Brando

Less soft

Like we discussed

Caddy is going alright. Bit stiff to lose titch to pandemic

Ignore the fuss created by the commentary. They said 'the umpire said you had time and space' and wondered exactly why that was significant. Remeber an important Law of our game - 'Most commentators have no idea of the Rules'.

Here's an actual quote from the laws of Football regarding one of the conditions in which Deliberate can be paid:

c) Player has had time and space to dispose of the football

Also the defender had made 2 steps back and was actually standing on the goal line before Jack touched him - and still had momentum that was taking him over the goal line irrespective of whether Jack touched him or not.

I get what the defender was trying to do - he wanted to stop and wait for Jack to put him under pressure. That's good defensive thinking. Similar to 'accidentally' hitting the forwards arms in a marking contest (it's only a free if it's deliberate - and all backmen can be very clumsy).

Agree one of the worst but we got the 4 points that's the silver lining.
No other team has flooded us like Sydney did, if other teams do that they too will score low as spending more time in their back half.

We must come up with a plan to combat this and I guess best it happened now in that we still got the win and the coaches look to formulate a plan for future teams who try it in the manner that Sydney did.

I would have thought the plan was obvious.

Dimma saying what could he do was a cop out IMO.

I am going to look at the replay at 15:00 on foxtel.

First questions that come to mind is who was our plus one in the backline and why where they so ineffective??

Why did Balta not have at least 4 shots at goal even if beyond 50 and starting in defence?

Why did our players not adjust in transition kicking to contest or areas where the impact would be proved minimal??

Why did Short not have multiple shots on goal from long range to??

I agree with most of that, he performed fine, didn't mean to come off as overly criticising his game if that's how it sounded. His contested work was really good and it's not his fault they played him that way or defended the way they did.

But the fact remains, they did let him run around on his own a lot of the game - or sent a junior to him - and suffered no adverse consequences by doing so. Opposition analysts are all over that stuff to get an edge.

A winger in a premiership contending side needs to be able to hurt the opposition more often than not with their disposal if they get left alone, rather than giving the opposition a golden opportunity to just not man him up, wouldn't you agree?
Well they did play first gamer Stevens on the wing, who lined up on either MacIntosh or Caddy. The other wing was young too but it's not like they did that deliberately, Stevens has only ever played wing anywhere, and the Swans were very young all over the park.

Don't think it's a fact that they let them run around on their own, and the adverse consequence were that both he and Caddy were in our best 6 players. Caddy has always been one of the more creative players in our side so he does use the ball better than 90%, but MacIntosh was part of many chains by hand or foot and I don't remember burying my head in my hands at any of his disposals, unlike last week.

Guess we'll have to wait, a bit of confidence might be the thing he needs, because we badly need wingmen in form and both he and Caddy are strong and good one on one players. North's Polac has been in good form on the wing and plays like Hawks Smith who tore us up, so MacIntosh will have his work cut out next week. But he is our best match up on him or any good running wingman, providing he plays like yesterday.

You realize we actually won the game?
I don't mind the idea of an inside player: either Ross or RCD, but I thought Lambert & Graham really stood up. I don't like Ross & Graham in the same team. Pickett & Egg played OK I thought.
Against North's ruck next week CJ & Chol are going to get a very good development session. Might lose the game though.
Rioli for Dow sure.

Yes I know we won the game. We did it, and did it in a very ugly fashion. At least we can take the 4 points, but there wasn't much else to take from it.

Not sure which game you watched, but Pickett hasn't been an asset or provided much value since the GF match.

Regardless of winning and getting the 4 points, we need to focus on improving because we seriously have a lot of work to do to be able to contend against the top sides. Even our coach has stated this.

Sure, you can only play on the opponent you get, but it did no doubt flatter his performance a bit, not unlike Soldo's in some respects.

Nobody is bumping his stocks up based on yesterday - despite the fact he was the highest rated ruck in the league for the round when TOG is accounted for. ;)

Don't think it's a fact that they let them run around on their own,

That's how they managed to get 2-3 on 1's in defence for much of the game, those spare players came from *somewhere*. Probably easier to pick up watching it live.

He's definitely more valuable as a defensive winger than a play-maker if we can manage to get that match-up happening. The worry is that there's no shortage of games where that's difficult or problematic.

I genuinely do hope he stakes a claim in coming weeks, he looks to have improved his thinking and has worked a bit more savvy and subtlety into his ball use from what we've seen this year, which sits well with his other good attributes - hard running, fitness base, courage, good size and aerial capacity.

I just think anyone proclaiming that Kmac is now automatic best-22 for the next half a decade based on yesterday - which is what was being insinuated in the post I responded to - is getting a fair way ahead of the reality in the here and now. He's still an opposition analysts wet dream in the making, which again, is no fault of his.

(Collingwood)Geelong, Brisbane, Port, Eagles, GWS - teams who seem to be rated as contenders. We so far have a draw from one match against this lot and worryingly, 5 matches to go.

(Carlton, Melbourne, Saints, Hawks) Bombers, Bulldogs - teams who could possibly yet contend but look mid table at worst. We have a 2-2 record v this group.

Freo, Gold Coast, North - teams who don’t look in contention but have all beaten more fancied teams this season.

(Swans) Crows - If you lose to them you are going nowhere. This may change for the Swans if they get players back.

Bolded are the teams we have yet to play, and I would think we would need to conjure 7 wins from 11 matches to make finals. We have one that we should win reliably left, v Crows. So we need to win 6 from the other 10 just to make finals. North looks the weakest of them all right now. We would not want to be losing this week, but I am sure North will see us as a beatable team. Should we lose, we will need to win 6 of the remaining 9 matches, with 5 of those being against teams currently seen as being seriously in contention, just to be confident of making finals.

So that gives a bit of context for this match, I see it as a match we really need to win. Pickett to Higgins.

Out: Rioli, just looked like someone has taken the air out of his tyres on the weekend, so unless he went in ill or something, he makes way.
Possibly also Chol.

In: Ross/Collier-Dawkins/Dow, whoever the selectors deem most ready. I would consider Coleman-Jones for Chol, who I thought went from decent to horrible when the rain came yesterday, though he did have a very hard fall. Probably not the best time to be chopping and changing though.

If we end up with loose players behind the ball we need to shuffle them around so we get the better ball users loose where posssible, Egg-Smith, Balta, Short, Caddy. We have quite a few players who don’t have the most penetrating kicks and them kicking it into a crowded forward 50 is a recipe for disaster.

I'm focused on this season and being successful. The only thing we need to improve is lowering our eyes and hot targets inside 50. That's how our forwards will look better. We're half a game out of the top 4 playing average football. Debuting Aarts, getting games into Stack, Ross, Chol, Balta, Egg. So some plusses and minuses. Winning games without Cotch, Sheds has been great. Kmacs form has been good. I did think Pickett played better this week without Cotch or Prestia. Now if I was selector I think I would've played CJ over Chol, and someone else before Egg ie played Pickett in the back line and debuted RCD. But this is a crucial game, dropping Rioli is a no brainer, get Dow IN but you want Ross and RCD debuting whilst Graham already in the team. Ruck combo of Chol and CJ?
Chol could barely compete against Sydney's Backup ruck. Goldstein runs all day competes really hard. Soldo can match him to some degree but you'll destroy CJ if you play him
