Autopsy Round 1 2019: Hawks defeats the Crows

Most impressive thing for me is that 6 of our 8 goal kickers were midfield/ruckmen.
Can't recall our midfielders being so goal focused in Clarkos time at the club

There’s definitely a new vibe this year, that and the intercept marking.

Also how Clarko backed worps and cuz to take two of the center bounce positions so many times when coaches would be nervous with the new rules against some of adelaides best players

Was lucky enough to go to the game , from the ground key observations

- Frawley / Mirra/ Sicily/ Stratton / Hardwick were great , beat the Crow forwards hands down, Scrimshaw looks a player as well.

- Sicily kicking out was a weapon , with the new rule was bombing to the wing.

- BB and Cegs controlled the rucks, BB is at the peak of his powers right now if he stays fit will have a huge year, Cegs 2 Nd year back off an ACL moved well.

- Mids worked so hard as a group , Worpol is a beast , got 200 gamer leadership written all over him, is hard as a cats head at the ball , Cousins work rate and finding the ball is starting to come through , he is looking more comfortable every game.

- Work rate and tackling pressure was off the charts and Fowards all contributed.

All goes well for a good year !! Go Hawks

If ever there was an illustration that stats can be misleading it’s this game. Rory Laird had 29 touches but I must admit I hardly noticed him playing.

Hopefully the boys can bring similar pressure and intensity next Sunday.

Can't have been that bad then.

Great to hear that you were surrounded by the brown and gold family and it sounds like you had a good time as well.

Let's hope that we get another big turn out next week against the doggies.

Have a great night but stay safe and watch out for those feral locals.

I went back to hotel.. early flight this morning, a few of the lads went out, definitely feeling it this morning. Was a great trip, not sure I’d come here for anything other than footy or work lol.

After the crows, port & Collingwood, Hawthorn has the next highest level of support over here. Heaps of local members all over the hill & within the cheer squad.

There were plenty of us today & we made plenty of noise.

I stayed at the Stamford so spend pre-game at the Strathmore, the bar manager said he’s never seen so many oppo supporters. I was looking around the pub and it was genuine 50/50 support, wouldn’t have been surprised if we had a few more tbh.

Just thought I’d mention Frawley, he was excellent yesterday. I understand he played on Joe the Goose but his presence in the air and assurance with the ball was impressive. One of his best games for a long time.

While I’m on maligned players, Conor Nash was really handy too. He had a deft hand in quite a few of our goals. He’s a bit unpredictable in what he does with the ball at times but yesterday it often came off. Whilst he probably will never clunk a contested mark, his presence and intensity in the air was much better too.

Do yourself a favour and try and remember another time in the last decade a key forward has been embarrassingly taken to the cleaners as bad as Tex was yesterday by Sic, not only did Sic dominate him in the contest he had 27 touches and was close to BOG. One of the greatest touch ups you’ll ever see.

Perhaps still attracts the best tallest defender so still has a huge role to play

I’m a big Ruff critic (a tad harsh as he was a freak), but his deft touches and smarts where super impressive yesterday. If he can just just duke a few more then he will have a good season, at least atm he is impacting the contest which he did not do last year.

Hey guys, just curious what you all thought of the guernsey worn by the Hawks?
I really liked it, it was a very classic look. I liked the Hawk logo on it, too.

There’s nothing that has sustained a brawl here more over the last few years than the design of our away jumper. This one seems to be doing OK.

It does have a classic feel, though. It’s apparently the style worn by Hawthorn when we were still the “Mayblooms”, the name for the club when horses still trotted down the streets of Melbourne pulling cartloads of coal or ice under wood shavings. I’m surprised, but I quite like it. The boys looked natural in it and I didn’t notice it after the first bounce.

Iread that for that season they reversed the colors, they were called the "Mustard Pots". Season want too flash apparently

The most impressive aspects of our defensive unit is how confident Impey, Sicily and Scrimshaw were when they dropped into the hole. It meant that Stratton and Chip could play lock down, which they are both phenomenal at. Being the man dropping in front of the forwards when the ball is coming in can be the loneliest place in football, but Impey did it so often and clunked everything overhead.

Outstanding win.

Special mention for Impey today. Best game he's played for the club for mine. Took them to the cleaners with repeated intercept marks in addition to great pressure and carry from half back. All pre season our good watchman on the training track routinely mentioned him as a stand out.

Best of all he just looks like he's really enjoying himself out there.

Great win by the boys interstate. Bar Gunston (who's obviously underdone and managing ITB / hip issues) the entire leadership group had great games. Was a little surprised no one mentioned Smith's game although can understand given the youf on show. Quickest and best two-way runner out there. Imagine the extra freedom he'll get when Scully comes into the team.
