Autopsy Round 1 2019: Hawks defeats the Crows

#hawthornproblems

The next two weeks are a huge test. Naturally, I think we will have a couple of down ones and end up getting a reality check, but what do I know?

If we bring this endeavour each week, we will finish top 4 again because from what I have seen, the top echelon of teams are beatable and not as frightening as the last couple of years.

Sorry, also think it's important that Daniel Howe somehow gets into this team.

I reckon the one area we were let down was the amount of ball Sloane got. Howe still checks his back pocket to check if Sloane has enough water and food to survive :)

I’m still in shock. Could not see how we could possibly overcome their midfield. Funnily enough their mids racked up huge possessions but were largely ineffective. Worpel, ill say it again - easily the most promising homegrown pure midfielder we have drafted since Shane Crawford- don’t include Hodgey as he played everywhere. Is thriving on the extra responsibility since tmitch went down and looks to be a future captain in waiting.

Agree on Frawley, best game I have seen him play in a long time. Benny McEvoy, you freakin STAR! Thank F...k that St Kilda has no idea when it comes to list management- you just don’t trade out a young ruckman with leadership qualities, great character and great hands ever... cousins - our recruitment team is absolutely taking the pi$$ out of drafting - no 46 in the rookie draft. He will probably never become an a grader but could easily become a solid B + - kicks goals too. Love what I saw In Scrimshaw. Feel a lot better now in trading out our first rounder/ Burton and second round pick for Wingard. Calling it now - he will become a superior player to Burton

If you knew nothing about draft history, in yesterday’s game you would swear that Harry M, Sicily, Hardwick, Worpel, Breust we’re taking in the first round....

Sam Mitchell- gave so much as a player and doing the same as a coach, massive massive coup in getting him back earlier from West Coast

Napoleon dynamite - you currently have no peer as a coach - genius. Love this club and we still have Howe, Wingard, Scully and just maybe a fit Agra this Birchall to come back....

Eddie doesn't get rated here because he never does anything against hawthorn.
This is exactly what I have always said, if you only watch Hawthorn games you'd be completely justified in thinking of him as a chip scabbing hack who averages 1.5 goals per game, he saves all his brilliance for non hawthorn games. But yesterday he lost all of my prespect. That 50 m penalty was him dangerfielding and then he tried it again.

Couldn't agree more mate.

If we were all thinking the competition was even last season, it's going to be a whole new level playing field this season.

I actually think it'll be exciting to watch the lower teams leapfrog those who have been atop of the ladder for years.

Also how we as a club combat this and remain a contender will be great to watch also.

The big test is improving our bottom 6.

Scully, Howe and Wingard will improve this quite a lot. Depth is going to be a good headache

Would have to be very close you'd imagine.

MinerBoy and I could literally provide you pages of posts slagging off Breust during our threepeat and afterwards.
Calls to trade him, posts that he was soft, lazy, disinterested and worth less than half the mids in the comp that various posters wanted us to trade him for.

You may not have noticed it but it happened a lot

Sheesh. Probably had noticed, but probably mentally blocked out the dribble.

I reckon he's been absolute gold. I know that Hawthorn have put his name out to trade, but I'm sure that we'd be getting some absolute quality in return for him, if that was to have happened. He's one of the best in the AFL. So hard to match up on.

Exactly. However criticism of Breust generally is a reflection on the poster rather than Breust.
Hell, we even have posters who criticise Clarko.

It’s going to be exciting without huge expctations

I’m calling Box Hill to go back to back in a canter though

Hardwick is such a good player. Hard to believe how his development has led him to become a key defender in our setup.

Frawley looks different. Haven't seen him look this good since the Melbourne days. Must be fit for once.

Harry is outstanding.

Not sure how we drop a couple of players to fit in Scully and Wingard.

Imagine how hard it is going to be fitting in Mitchell and Coniglio plus whatever low gold draft pick we somehow find :)

If our midfield continues to develop with the same promise they showed yesterday then I wouldn’t be surprised to see cognilio drop from our wish list and we go for tall timber up forward and down back.

It’s a toss up between take a-grade talent whenever it presents itself or go after the options you really need. Dunno. Good problem to have.

The game plan has changed a bit. We’ve finally done away with the switch to the outer side at all costs tactic. That got found out and chopped off by the good sides last year, partly because we don’t have the same kicking skills as we once did. Now, we look shorter into the guts but if that’s not on we just bang it long and straight to a contest and get numbers around it. Hence the discrepancy in the stats. We don’t stuff around with it now. It’s effective but very taxing (and fairly unattractive). Poppy, Nash and Breust are key to it up forward. Last year we won games late doing it but ran out of puff at the wrong time. Will be interesting to see how long we can keep up the intensity.

Great point. The off-field fitness and recovery (mental and physical) will be as key to our performance this year as anything that happens on field.

It’s important to consider that as physically and mentally demanding as this game style is for our side, it will be just as demanding for opposition sides. Opposition sides that are hopefully unprepared for the effort and commitment needed to play against it. The crows certainly tried their best, ran their guts out and got nowhere. They broke in the third quarter when every effort to move the ball forward had twice as many touches for them as it did for us. The balance of speed certainly tipped toward our forward end of the field.

Yeah, I’m pretty excited about this year. I think the hawks have the chance to write a new, unique and exciting chapter in the strategy of afl.

Incredible win.

Looking at the stats we shouldn’t have won.

Brilliant planning and execution.
But all this extra possessions was Crows going wide and across the ground because of our defensive structures. Whereas Hawks often went the direct route through the centre which strangely Crows allowed it. So makes a lot sense.

WTF was with Betts sitting on Stratton?

Is it just me or is that disrespectful AF?

Imagine the melts if the situation had happened the other way around.

I don't get all the frothing over Betts, overrated AF and isn't half the player Breust is yet gets a million times more love.
I loved Eddie for it. A bit of character in a player doesn't hurt. Funny stuff. He and Stratts were having a laugh throughout the game.
