Round 1 - Essendon vs Adelaide Pre-Game Build-Up Thread

We have two bags of Crouch, 75kg of Mackay, 5 weeks of Tex in a moon boot, a salt shaker half full of GF tears, a new midfield with Gibbs, Dougie , Greenwood, Gibson, also a quart of Talia, a quart of Guns (Fog), a case of Eddie Betts, a Pint of raw Hampton and 2 dozen Rorys.
We need em all for the trip, we wanna push it as far as we can.

In the Fog interview he kind of alluded to not yet understanding the AFL leading patterns yet. I took that as him needing to learn the structures in the SANFL before he will be selected. Also if theres questions of his running ability then the breakneck speed of a docklands game will have him cooked by half time.
Sounds like he's regurgitating what he's been told by the coaches. They would been reviewing his games to shreds - not dazzled by the marks and goals - but highlighting all the times he ran into someone's space, should have led his defender away etc.

We saw on the weekend that he knows where and when to lead to find the ball. Just a smart footballer who knows where to go instinctively. Jenkins has had however many years in our system and doesn't know how to lead.

We place a great deal of importance in structure and coordination between our players. Those things are valued higher than football ability. It's why we find it difficult to bring Doedee or Gallucci or Poholke or Fogarty or whoever in early. But are comfortable shoe-horning Mackay into the half back slot because he knows our playbook like the back of his hand.

And in Pyke's two years we have done really well so I doubt they'll be changing their thinking now.

Not referring to Fogarty here specifically but I'm not convinced that all players can be structure players though. Some are just rough diamond/instinct players and trying to get them to play within a rigid system only stifles their strengths.

Dangerfield is the obvious example. Its no coincidence that our structures are better since he left. At Geelong he is the gameplan.

The downside is that you lose some individual brilliance and plodders keep getting picked over more talented teammates. They know where to go but can't necessarily do something useful when they get there.

The whole, but Jenkins kicks 40 goals a year stat has to be one of the most misleading ever.Way too many of them are junk time goals in the last qtr when the heavy lifting has been well and truly done.
How many times does JJ kick multiple goals when we lose?
On face value, here are his stats:

From 20 games (he was injured in round 2, had rounds 3-4 and 5 out, had round 9 out).

It doesn't look like we struggling to bring Fogarty in early , we've given him every chance for round 1

Ditto Milera 2 yrs back , we just don't fast track average players like Galluci and Poholke

Forget Doedee he's been injured last 2 pre seasons and a late starter to footy . Getting plenty of opportunity now

Had a reasonable patch mid year after being dropped, trouble is he trailed off significantly when it mattered most. His only decent haul involved 3 last quarter goals(of 4 total) in a game we dominated. I’m not a Jenkins hater, i think he can be an extremely damaging/dangerous forward and showed that in 2015/16, but his form late last year and coming into this year is poor. He’s lost all confidence and needs an extended run in the 2’s to rediscover his form at present.

Talk about an overreaction
This is the place for overreactions. Two weeks ago Talia was going to miss the entire season because he was a late withdrawal from an internal scratch match. One week ago it was decided that Gallucci's career will be a failure because he wasn't selected in a pre-season trial match. Now our season is down the drain because we lost a pre-season game.

Are you concerned at all regarding our defensive and forward line structures and the lack of run and speed?

Not yet.

With our midfield depth now we will see an extra run through the forwardline, and maybe 2 when Brouch returns. Sloane and Gibbs forward of the ball is a better prospect than Cameron.

Defensively we were still able to turn the ball over in the first 2 JLT games and I'd like to see Milera added when fit.

Team for first game
Brown, Talia, Kelly
Liard, Hartigan, Douglas
Atkins, Gibbs, Seedsman
Jacobs, M Crouch, Sloane
Lynch, Walker/Forgety, Hampton/Murthy
Betts, JJ, McGovern

Doedee, Greenwood, B Crouch/CEY, Gibson/MacKay

Be interesting week can see battle lines form over a few players.
Gibson/MacKay
Hampton/Murthy
B Crouch/CEY (injury concerns)
Walker/Forgety (injury concerns)

Unless McGrath goes to him

It's Interesting, after a full preseason training as a mid and trumpeting his midfield move would they go and move him back? They can be pretty stubborn and pigheaded our coaches box...

I agree he's best placed to take Betts but not sure if they do it. As a rule our main weakness is giving up cheap goals over the back, we commit too many to the contest or structure poorly, you guys can cash in like everyone else...

Stats are clearly wrong.

4 goals and 17 touches in the 2nd biggest game of the year. But he doesn't play well in big games

Had 1 touch til quarter time, a goal in the 2nd, did little in the 3rd another handful of touches, junked it in the 4th with another 3 goals.

Numbers never tell the whole story.

Stats aren't wrong, they are misleading. Those stats are indicative of a premium flat track/ball hogging game, he did basically no work and that showed the following week where he didn't benefit from the work of his teammates. As azza77 said above, when the game was on Jenkins was Mr.Invisible.

Jenkins' celebrations in the 4th when kicking his junktime/joe the goose goals were actually kind of disgusting to watch. Celebrating like he'd just won the game on the siren.

From Ben Hart sounds like Walker and Brouch are no chance for round 1. Actually let slip that Walker may not be available for "a little while".

Did imply Fogarty is a big chance.
Walker did that himself this morning.

Said that Brad had done a fair bit more work than him. IMO Brad plays a SANFL game before a return to the seniors. Whether that's a trial this week or next who knows.

There was a write up on freo maybe having two debutants as a big call for round 1 could we have 3 in Fogarty Doedee and Murphy don’t say we don’t take risks if we do
