Reigning Premiers playing "apparently" the biggest club in Australia on a perfect Friday night at the G

Attendance?

66,254 Bwahahahahaha

Eddie will blame the Grand Prix somehow. Or ISIS.

Our backline was crap now I know I've harped on about houli for 150 games but I'll say it again he is not the answer get him and hunt out ffs and persist with short ,markov ,Drummond ,menadue

SEN player ratings https://www.sen.com.au/news/2017/03/23/ratings-or-round-1-carlton-v-richmond/

David ASTBURY – 6
Took care of Casboult which was his main task on the night. Did his job.

Dan BUTLER – 7
Debutant was lively with two goals from 19 disposals. Got some speed and smarts about his game.

Josh CADDY – 5
Former Cat kicked one nice goal but overall wasn't a huge factor - 17 disposals in total.

Jason CASTAGNA – 7
Kicked two goals in first quarter and might have kikcked four if not for innacuracy. Ended with 2.4

Reece CONCA – 7
Used as rebounding defender and might have found his niche. Bright start to a pivotasl year.

Trent COTCHIN – 7
Stats not huge but eight clearances, eight tackles and five inside-50s had an impact on the contest.

Shane EDWARDS – 4
Flew under the radar to a degree. Only had six kicks for one goal.

Brandon ELLIS – 5
Used off half-back where he played a support role. No glaring skill errors which was a key.

Ben GRIFFITHS – 3
Played as second forward but struggled for large parts. New year but seems more of same.

Shaun GRIGG – 7
Veteran wingman linked up well all night and relished space afforded to him.

Dylan GRIMES – 5
Defender played a minor role taking a variety of opponents. Rarely put under pressure.

Bachar HOULI – 3
Couldn't find the footy for most of the night. Only had four kicks and 14 disposals.

Taylor HUNT – 1
Quiet night. One kick and will be very nervous about team selection already.

Sam LLOYD – 2
Snagged goal right before half time about his only contribution on a quiet night.

Dustin MARTIN – 9
Set victory up with three first-half goals and ended with four and plenty of assists. Huge.

Kamdyn MCINTOSH – 5
Hardly sighted in opening half then got more involved. Steady without starring.

Toby NANKERVIS – 6
First ruck did well. Team won clearances and he contributed two goals. Good debut for former Swan.

Dion PRESTIA – 8
Gun recruit contributed as club would have hoped - 28 disposals, one goal and six clearances.

Alex RANCE – 6
Didn't have a touch in first term. Did well but Weiterung kicked three on him.

Jack RIEWOLDT – 6
Lurked inside-50 and was dangerous at times. Only one goal though from 10 kicks.

Daniel RIOLI – 5
Added bulk to his frame and he was lively when around the ball. Two goals and three tackles.

Nick VLASTUIN – 5
Played more forward of centre for one goal from 11 possessions, but laid 12 tackles.
Obviously no one will get a 10 this year. 30+ possessions, 800 odd metres gained, 4 goals, that in reality was 6. Nope no 10's on SEN.

10 is obviously reserved for Dangerfield, Fyfe and Ablett.

Just finished watching the replay after being at the game last night and I'm hard pressed to be too upset about anything in life at the moment. A bit of a lapse in the 3rd quarter when I thought we should have put the game beyond doubt but we steadied and won easily with minimal influence from Jack and Rance. Rance even looked a little out of sorts. Maybe he went to watch the Book of Mormon the night before. I saw it last week and found it totally overrated. He was probably hoping for a better troll of his religion too. Thankfully, I can move on with the upcoming Comedy Festival looming. I'm sure Alex will too and be in AA form next weekend against the Pies.

One thing became very clear to me watching the game. We must sign Dustin Martin. I could handle Deledio leaving. But not Dusty. Not after last night. I thought at some stage he would become the best player in the comp. This year might be the year.

HUGE game next week now. 80,000 plus.

I wonder whether the difference really becomes structural for them, Lennon probably plays more as a mid sized hit up forward whereas Lloyd is an opportunistic small forward?
Hard to see on TV, but I had a mate at the game who said that Lloyd spent time on the bench and came on when Griff went into the ruck so that Nank could have a spell on the pine. As such they expected him to play tall and get involved in marking contests, which seems plausible with Butler, Edwards, Castagna and Rioli crumbling everything.
If this is the case, then Lennon may be the better option.

It only took us about 8 years to make a call on Vickery. We have been a bunch of slow learners to date. Maybe this year is our break out moment when the coaching group demand the production of those standards that have made Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney the power clubs they have been. That said, potential replacements are still thin on the ground.
I know they are thin especially in the tall forward position but geez, how many chances.

LMAO at the ladder, Carlton second, the fans and club better snapshot that....

At the end of the day a 7 goal win in round one I would take any day of the week, its the next two games that will define our season I believe.

Conca, too slow and he slows the game down, always has. Hunt just hasn't got it together at the moment, not sure he will.

I don't think we will see any changes, that's Hardwick's MO, but who knows what Hardwick will do when he doesn't know himself.
And Concas disposal is very poor. What a waste of a pick. Ellis as well. When we start replacing these guys with youngsters like Markov and others then we will be a decent side. They just are not up to AFL standard.

Not a lot of love for Griff, this week and I'm not a huge fan, but I thought he was ok v Blues.

With the structure of the side at the moment he is required to contest and if he can't mark it bring it to ground for the crumbers, which he did. Move it forward quickly, instead of hanging on to it for an eternity as was his want last year, which he did. Give Nankervis a spell in the middle of each quarter, which he did, and finally compete hard in the ruck when he's there, which he didn't.

The fact that there is no one putting any pressure on him as a Forward/Ruckman means he plays.

Chol, not ready for AFL yet. Moore, ditto. Elton, if it's the same Elton I've seen running around the last five years, isn't up to AFL standard, and can't play ruck. Maric can't play as a mobile tall forward. Soldo ditto.

So the fact is it's Griif.

Disagree...
Dangerfield and Ablett are the pinnacle of footballers in our code...
Dusty whilst good is to me a Rugby League player playing our code...
Dusty lacks the AFL football skills of the other two...
Its his strength that makes him a quality player...a little like leigh matthews...a physical attribute that would also make him a quality RL player...
Dusty is larger than life...
Not very skillful...
Just a bull...
Glad we have him all the same...

That made me laugh. Rugby league player.....:drunk:

No...
Its the same old same old with dusty...
And I'll take it cos I'm a tiger supporter...
I want to see what dusty has got come the season proper..
He's super fit and super strong...
Thats it...
Everything he did last night was larger than life...big...big...big...
Big kick...
Big fend...
Hes a beast...
Just lucky with his genes...
Given a choice i prefer Dangerfield as a player...his brownlow year was sensational in skills...

You are an absolute clown mate. Surely your winding everyone up ?
jusy lucky with his genes ?
It is the same old with dusty, tear another game to shreds and 3 brownlow votes

The premiers conceded 75 against us and 92 against the Pies in the second half of the season when marching towards a flag. It's round 1 and the game plan is a 180 flip on last year, so there are going to be teething issues as we get it bedded in. If we concede nearly 100 to Carlton in round 14 when we meet again then there is reason to be concerned.
Not if we kick 150!

And Concas disposal is very poor. What a waste of a pick. Ellis as well. When we start replacing these guys with youngsters like Markov and others then we will be a decent side. They just are not up to AFL standard.

both did well....

its funny people lose their shit if you talk about dropping grigg, but hunt conca bellis are fair game. Conca was ok. Did some good things are looks pretty at home in defense

i just hope we keep faith in the kids that have shown us some hope: rioli castagna butler nankervis vlastuin

Interesting to think that last year Martins first instinct would have been to look sideways and chip the ball 15 metres.
This year, no hesitation looked forward saw space and banged it forward to a one on one contest.
I know what I prefer to see!
spot on... and yes, a very very clear indicator of the change: it was great footy to watch too. long may it continue/.
