Autopsy Round 11, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Kuwarna

I'm not going to post any positives or negatives. I just can't understand how the entire team looked absolutely gassed from the very beginning of the game.

Yeo's groin might be fine and he might have a lot of his strength back but he's lost his explosive power. Did he come back too early, does he need to build into. I don't know but it was just sad watching it.

Yeo too busy thinking about saving the groins for $1.3m and the crows.

I am sure crows fans will be thrilled with their club after his effort.

Most disappointing loss of the season because the attitude and effort was just off...

Worst game of Bailey Williams career maybe. He gave up. No words other then disappointment. Sheed looked like a man who knows its over. Dropped his head. Its time. Yeo/Cripps/Kelly did not do enough as leaders and dropped the bundle.

One or 2 times when Witherden put his body on the line and hit the contest hard and so many others just didnt... A one step backwards game thats for sure

For those that are interested in player ratings (not fantasy points).

Top 5 for the Eagles:
1. Barrass
2. Reid
3. Chesser
4. Kelly
5. McGovern

Bottom 5 (not including Dewar as sub):
18. Hunt
19. Sheed
20. Rotham
21. Hough
22. Maric

Kelly looks surprising up there but I believe the high rating was for being top two for the game in pressure acts, clearances, contested possessions, tackles and groundball gets.

I'm surprised Hough ranked so low, but was probably a product of the non-existent pressure up the ground giving them silver service into the 50. Didn't think he was bad though tonight.

Yes I didn't have him in the bottom 5, but I did think maybe he tried to do too much at times.

Not going to rewatch that mess to see what he did wrong though.

No effort or lack thereof. Effort was good last week but decided to not give a sh*t this week but maybe fatigue since the fitness isn't there yet. As a result, whenever the team got the ball, there was no one running to open spaces.
  • Turnovers killed us and our poor defence on the spread got exposed big time when the effort is not there. When the effort is there to defend then it's not as bad, a few goals here and there but when its bad, then too many goals gets conceded.
  • Sheed, he may have tagged Dawson for a bit but once he was released from tagging, he did nothing else. Should've been subbed if it wasn't for Witherden's injury. When he's not tagging, he's useless Hutch like. Surely we can bring Trew in for him. Unfortunately he looked like he knows that it's over for him as he's too slow and is poor on the defensive spread plus not getting enough ball.
  • Rotham looked really bad however, his performances seems to correlate how the team is playing. Whenever the team wins, he actually does pretty well, getting more than 10 touches and uses his rebounding ability as he can get more ball whenever the team is under less pressure as he doesn't have to constantly defend. When the team is under more pressure, Rotham has to defend more at the cost of attacking which his defensive abilities get exposed (despite the team doing well against Naarm, Fritsch still exposed him defensively which I had him as a negative).
  • Kelly burning Reid and turning it over.
  • B.Williams smashed in the ruck although to be fair it was against a good ruckman. However as a result, Adelaide were able to setup aggressively and get cleaner clearances.
  • Forwards failing to halve contest.
  • Getting murdered on the spread.

Meh =
= Waterman tried but without the team winning the ball and starving entries, not even he can do much. I can guarantee if Curnow or Cameron were in our forward line and we play like this, even they couldn't get a touch. However what frustrates me with Waterman, is when the team is doing poorly, he just gives up chasing just like a boxer who's down on the scorecards but mentally quits. It's what I saw with Waterman and that can be attributed to the team's poor performance in not getting enough ball and supply to him.
= Darling, tried but pretty much same as Waterman.
= Yeo looked underdone early in the game but came back decently later on as he started getting match fit.

Positives +
  • Reid still showing flashes in a team getting destroyed. Loved his fend of against Rachele and should've had another goal if Kelly never burnt him.
  • Gov continues to give it his all and likely singlehandedly stopped us from losing by 100 plus with his intercepting abilities. Was good with ball in hand asides from thinking he was Jetta with that missed kick. Will say it again that he's in AA form as he's a genuine rebounding option that not many KPDs can do.
  • Barrass was really good as well, helped kept Tex quiet from a goal scoring perspective as he made 2 out 4 shots.
  • Dewar showed glimpses of the limited time he's in. I believe he will make it as he has the talent and class from the limited time I saw him.
  • Hough was solid and was a victim of poor upfield pressure and effort.
  • Witherden's spoil and putting his body on the line.
  • Didn't lose by 100.
  • One of Chesser's best game imo. Used his speed to attack and chase, one of the few who actually tried.
  • J.Williams competed well in the air and was ok in the ruck.
  • Still almost matched them in clearances although our clearances were under pressure.
  • Ginbey gave it his all and was consistent. Refused to chase at times which infuriated me but so did most of the team to be fair.
  • Ryan showing signs but glimpses in a team getting smashed. Loved seeing him rebounding on the half back flank.
  • Jones was great with his pressure and with his run and carry. Used it better than usual.
  • Now we know for sure that Sheed's time at AFL level is finished barring injuries to our mids.

Final thoughts.

I think the team hasn't fully recovered from it's fatigue after defeating a top 4 side at home last week. As a result the team looked very lethargic from the start and the Crows were able to get easy chip kicks and the team was fatigued enough that they couldn't make space for consistent stretches and was too tired to defend on the spread plus not getting enough players at the contest to either run it forward or defend the spread. Hopefully with better fitness next season, the team can produce consistent efforts for longer stretches both home and away games.

Last year this would've been a 120-150 point loss (lost by 122 last year) so keeping it under 100 is good at the very least.

They had 59 inside 50's
He had 0 - Rebound 50s and 0 tackles and 4 touches.
What did he even do out there aside from being a witches hat?
Squibbed out of a marking contest and then ran at Tex to spoil in a one on one and instead of crashing into Tex he went to the front and waved a hand at the ball. To scared to crunch Tex?? Iwish Witherden had been the one going!

Disagree with the Waterman comments his chasing was fine today and has been something he has prided himself all season and been praised for
Jack Darling was so good against Melbourne with his defensive pressure last week today was poor
Jamie Cripps and Liam Ryan's defensive pressure wa so bad and allowed there direct opponent to run of and create

Our forward line as a whole had its worst game for the year and allowed Adelaide to generate to many goals from the back half
Thought Chesser was terrific and a highlight for us along with Hough

I am shocked you read that post. I am waiting for a AI summarised version to comment.

It's unlike you Keys to enter the predictions and dreamtime zone re last two home games and ladder position, but I'm liking it!

Yeah, won’t be doing that again

Chessers best game but there were times esp early where he needed to go harder but didn’t .Ryan can at least stick a tackle
HEDws should have played! Geez Simmo there’s a reason Tex and Fogarty love playing us. No big body to muscle up.
HW is better than BW at rucking around the ground as he uses his body better.
Cripps was insipid. Why mark 60 odd m out and slip a quick handball to Duggan on your right?? It cramped up a left footer running the wrong side?.Bad handball? Or did Duggo call for it?
Can somebody make up a sign in 10ft high letters saying “ SHEPHERD”. It protects teammates and encourages players to help mates. And it’s a new concept in AFL circles.

I couldn't watch the game but checked the score at 1/4 time and got that old familiar sinking feeling. Knew a 100pt losing was incoming. Wtf happened? How did we go from what we did from last week to this? I don't understand.

Didn't mind this from Simpson.

Honest about the fact the team is not the same one that was decimated by injuries and that they have to be critical and honest with the players.

Says he thought they were past these performances.

Talks about Yeo not being good, but is pretty balanced in how we had some wins around the ground but as a team were shit (not his words exactly).

Adelaide is not a champion team at the moment, but what they are is generally a well organised and structured team that can move the ball well. If your team defence/pressure is off and they get to play how they want, they will cut you open. Different kind of challenge to last week with Melbourne, who tend to keep the ball in the contest more. I feel like with our focus on the contest at the moment, we are vulnerable to this type of uncontested play... our team defence just isn't up to scratch yet.

Terrible day. Hopefully some good learnings to come out.

Could this have anything to do with flying over on Friday? Two nights in a row not sleeping in your own bed. Seemed out of the ordinary when Simmo mentioned it in the presser I'd of thought a short flight like Adelaide we'd do that Saturday midday.

Positives:

Chesser put in.
Reid gave us some more highlights.
Barrass Gov and Hough looked to play well. [kinda odd given we lost by 99 but I'll take it]

Negatives:

I mean, yeah 99 point loss.
Getting pretty sick of Kelly being a selfish campaigner week in and week out, can't help but think he has a performance based contract and gets paid extra coin for every goal. Easy fix there, deductions for every time he burns a team mate in a better position.

Honorable Mentions:

Jake Waterman's becoming the Novac Djokovic of the AFL with these full forward impersonations. We've seen him getting out the G-Train, The Duck, Plugger Waterman, Fevolution/Loosh but today we were that shit he had to switch it up. And I think he gave us some first class Matthew Richardson's. Blood pressure was visibly rising and it was actually entertaining to watch, can't wait to see what he does next.

Simmo: for many years his predictive programming powers have been growing and this week he crowned himself the GOAT. Just imagine what this could mean for us when he finally flicks the switch and starts to speak about the club as if he actually believes we're a good side.
