Autopsy Round 11, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Kuwarna

Positives:

Chesser put in.
Reid gave us some more highlights.
Barrass Gov and Hough looked to play well. [kinda odd given we lost by 99 but I'll take it]

Negatives:

I mean, yeah 99 point loss.
Getting pretty sick of Kelly being a selfish campaigner week in and week out, can't help but think he has a performance based contract and gets paid extra coin for every goal. Easy fix there, deductions for every time he burns a team mate in a better position.

Honorable Mentions:

Jake Waterman's becoming the Novac Djokovic of the AFL with these full forward impersonations. We've seen him getting out the G-Train, The Duck, Plugger Waterman, Fevolution/Loosh but today we were that shit he had to switch it up. And I think he gave us some first class Matthew Richardson's. Blood pressure was visibly rising and it was actually entertaining to watch, can't wait to see what he does next.

Simmo: for many years his predictive programming powers have been growing and this week he crowned himself the GOAT. Just imagine what this could mean for us when he finally flicks the switch and starts to speak about the club as if he actually believes we're a good side.
As good as Waterman has been this year, I don't think he's yet earnt the right to give the team a bake yet. He was an average player for the first 85 games of his career, not Wayne Carey.

We had 15 seasoned players in the 22 today, 16 if you count Bailey Williams who is 24.
That's too many to be having 100 point losses.
Lack of experience cannot be used as an excuse.
And its also concerning because in reality the amount of youth developing is less than I might've thought (recongnising the likes of Hewett, Bazzo, Culley, Johnstone, Barnett who've had some exposure could be added to this) and Waterman & O.Allen could be considered youngish.

The biggest change in Witherden this season has been the way he has put his body on the line.

I thought he was soft prior to this season but he's copped some big hits this year, even after looking and knowing he's about to get smashed. Looks like a different player this year from the last few.
Problem with Witherden has always been a lack of pace and the way he takes too much time to kick the ball. It’s almost as if he is intent on drawing a hit or tackle by waiting until the last moment to kick it. Quite often this results in crap delivery. I don’t think his ticker has ever been a problem

Negative: Unfortunately Rotham’s Dad wasn’t as good at pulling out as his son is.

In all seriousness, the lack of effort and intensity is what kills me. Can handle losing to a better side, but that was just uncompetitive trash.
If you are talking about the incident where he pulled out of going for a mark, I think he was called out by Rochelle. He was coming back for the ball and dropped his hands thinking one of his team mates had called him out

Adelaide is not a champion team at the moment, but what they are is generally a well organised and structured team that can move the ball well. If your team defence/pressure is off and they get to play how they want, they will cut you open. Different kind of challenge to last week with Melbourne, who tend to keep the ball in the contest more. I feel like with our focus on the contest at the moment, we are vulnerable to this type of uncontested play... our team defence just isn't up to scratch yet.

Terrible day. Hopefully some good learnings to come out.

Agree 100%. Good insight.

Sitting at basically the top of the riverbank stand behind the goals I witnessed crows players spreading unapposed and then making leads with their opponents 10 metres behind them.

Little to no pressure on a team like that at home is asking to get smashed.

Rotham stunk it up against Melbourne too, it just wasn't called out as much

HEdwards deserves the spot
Replace a fast agile player in rotham with a 200cm lumbering giant for a game that is forecast to be soaking wet ?

Not that I think rotham shouldn't be dropped but it may be a good week to bring in an extra small running player and maybe put someone like Jones or hunt back

Kelly was back to his lazy season apart from occasions
It was a hard day for our inside mids we bailey Williams was smashed in the ruck and crows took full advantage of that .

Thought jack Williams rucked well as the backup . We almost looked a better clearance side when he rucked around the ground .

I call bullshit u

Disagree with the Waterman comments his chasing was fine today and has been something he has prided himself all season and been praised for
Jack Darling was so good against Melbourne with his defensive pressure last week today was poor
Jamie Cripps and Liam Ryan's defensive pressure wa so bad and allowed there direct opponent to run of and create

Our forward line as a whole had its worst game for the year and allowed Adelaide to generate to many goals from the back half
Thought Chesser was terrific and a highlight for us along with Hough

“I call bullshit u” too

Not really, agree on all points.

Sounds like players got ahead of themselves after last week’s win.

Most disappointing loss of the season because the attitude and effort was just off...

Worst game of Bailey Williams career maybe. He gave up. No words other then disappointment. Sheed looked like a man who knows its over. Dropped his head. Its time. Yeo/Cripps/Kelly did not do enough as leaders and dropped the bundle.

One or 2 times when Witherden put his body on the line and hit the contest hard and so many others just didnt... A one step backwards game thats for sure
That wasnt the worst game of baileys career? Have we forgotten about what witts did to him a month ago.

He's not there to get touches.

I actually thought he was okay. Didn't stop trying and was solid defensively. The one error I can remember was a spoil in the first half that went inward rather than towards the boundary, but even then it was a good effort to get to that contest.
People on here rating a third tall defenders game on how many touches they got is just tragic.

The first quarter was some of the worst team defence you will ever see. Forwards not locking it in, mids unaccountable and the defence leaked goals every time they went in. Definately looked like a team coasting through the motions.

Not much more to say. Sadly we never made inroads after that. We got stuck at halfback again like we always do when we are playing poor footy and our workrate is down.

I'm back to freaking out about our age profile and inability to replace retiring players through the draft.

Positives
-Chesser great game
-Reid great game

Negatives
-Not enough CBAs for Ginbey. Our midfield dominated last week with him there. Yeo rushed back in made the midfield worse.
-Witherden injury
-Sheed needs to go. Cant get games over WAFL crew
-Hunt continues to be down on form. Need to shift him to the backline because struggles on wing.
-Dewar not getting much gametime again.
-Duggan with a shocker

Upon reflection overnight, I was too dismissive of what a $hitshow that was.

The team on paper is a hell of a lot better than that.

Drank their own bathwater from the week before? The team chooses when to give effort and when not to, which has been the case for a very long time? Belief?

I'd like to put the blame on the midfield as that's where it started, but it was pretty much the whole team.

Oh well, onto next week.

And thats been our problem for decades.

Could not believe the space offerred to the Crows players in the 1st quarter. They just chipped the ball around to uncontested mark to uncontested mark. Not an Eagles player within 5 to 10 meters 99% of the time.

We zoned off and zoned out.

Once the damange was done we tapped out.

Defenders in the forward 50 had no hope as they were zoning as well and with zero pressure up the ground it was a turkey shoot.

We still have a long way to go.

Cripps, McGovern, yeo all ageing a d needing to be replaced.
Barrass, witherden, hunt, Ryan Duggan all second ageing tier and will eventually go in the next 5 years if they last that long.

This team stagnated for 4 years because of the Kelly farm selling and Simpson thinking we had 1 more flag if we got the crew together and the injuries hit.

Sadly we won't contend for a flag for another 5 to 10 years at least.

Got to enjoy the youth coming through and appreciate the success we had consistently and the wins along the way.

Saying we stagnated for four years because we gave up picks for Kelly is beyond stupid. You think we would be any better with a couple of extra chessers and Burgiels in the team?

Another thing I have seen recently is Barrass hitting some more aggressive kicks forward. Nowhere near McGovern levels but he's delivered a handful of good 50m kicks forward the past two weeks with a lower trajectory.

No matter what age a player is they should always be looking to improve or add strings to their bow.
