Autopsy Round 13 = Melbourne 66-62 Collingwood

Some talk that Melbourne’s goal kicking played a part in the close margin. While that’s true our field kicking was also off and similarly impacted on the outcome/margin.

It can certainly be argued that our field kicking was under the pressure of the Melbourne mids, whereas their set shot kicking was just woeful.

Yeah I know. I do think there are some players who just play better in the seniors. He was handy last season, and with added fitness, I think he may have something to offer. But, I'm probably just clutching.
I think many of us wanted him to come on this year. He just hasn’t. Can’t see us retaining him tbh.

Still can find a spot for AJ.
People need to realise he’s the ultimate 3rd-4th banana.
With a fit McStay, Mihocek and the addition of Elliott, that’s when he’s a danger.
I want to see this combo before we start axing..
Krueger and Reef have tricks, but not the game awareness Ash has.
Was off today, but it happens..
Definitely not writing him off. But his off games are really terrible. He seems to lack effort when it's not working out for him. Drop a few easy marks. Missed tackles. You can have these off games, but still put in effort.

He has kicked 14 goals in 11 games. Averages 8 disposals a game and 1.6 tackles a game. Not sure that will cut it, when McStay, Elliot and Ginnivan are all fit.

Just felt like a game where we played mostly terrible outside a total of 10 minutes (5 at the start and 5 at the end) and they played at their best and won by 4 points (although they really probably should have pumped us)

Today you really noticed that we were missing Elliott, De Goey, Howe, McStay, Sidebottom and Ginnivan

What made it worse was basically every player bar a few playing shockers.

Pendlebury, Adams, Mihocek, Noble and Maynard in particular stood out.

Like, at what point does Mihocek realise that when May is beating you, start playing him defensively? Spoil it, bring it to ground, drag him away from the contest. It's pretty simple stuff. Was baffling to watch him continually try and out mark someone who clearly wasn't going to be out marked today.

Just finished watching this on Kayo. My early impression is we’re Collingwood actively trying to kick it to Melbourne?

Every time it was a 50/50 pray and kick somehow there was always a Melbourne player there.

Also Noble……Thar dude HAS TO GO. He is absolutely a spray and pray player. Offers little and constantly creates turnovers.

Played like a team with the flu. The manic defensive game wasn’t there, there was no run out of the backline and the dump kicks to Lever and May were doing my head in.

Cameron spends too much time in the ruck, Cox was needed around the ground for his marking and presence but no he’s sitting on the bench or at FF and getting a couple of minutes a quarter on the ball. It’s Grundy all over again, fmd have the coaches not seen how Mason plays when he gets to run around the ground.

After seeing today and yesterday, Freddy would have been a better in than Reef, he shows zero imho.

AJ I love as a player and think he’ll do well eventually but he does go missing for long patches, worth working on the defensive side of things but probably needs some VFL time. McStay or Freddy or both Will definitely be taking his spot after the bye.

Overall I’m happy with the start of the season, lots to improve and players to come back, we are definitely in the fight this year. Not favourites by any means but in the fight. I’m usually very pessimistic about our chances but fly rubs off on you.
Go pies.

Covid. They were picking him on attributes, rather than him showing that he knows what to do and where to go.

He needs to either start playing midfield in the VFL, or down back.

Ruscoe, I think we’re all realising now, ain’t going to make it. Ryan is very slight of build and more of a runner than a defender. Begg is anyone’s guess but I’m not optimistic. Kelly doesn’t seem to have it.

I think Reef’s best chance is as a medium defender, even if he’s behind Murphy he could still get games and be handy depth. As a forward he’s a liability.

It's cool how you make words mean whatever you like. Doesn't make you sound silly at all.
Ok let's keep this going. You're the one who thinks just by making a post, you've brought an issue into being and cannot be naysaid.

An issue means a problem to be discussed. The problem you see is bringing Lipinksi straight into the seniors. I disagree that this is a problem and hence also no issue.

He is a utility who can pinch hit at various positions. Someone here mentioned he doesn't have enough speed to play as a midfielder. I think he was the fastest player in his draft.

He definitely has the speed. Reputedly doesn’t have the tank, but they’re not even trying to build that by playing him in midfield in VFL.

I think he should be setting himself to be Howe’s long term replacement down back.

He was mostly just running. I thought he was good to go for this week so I’m not sure why he didn’t get selected.
Maybe not enough ball handling and marking practice. Did you see him using the footy by hand or marking at all? Hope he hasn’t had any set backs with that hand because you’re right, he was meant to be back this week.

You can't blame everything on Noble. Most of our players played bad, including Mr dependable himself Pendles.

I love AJ, but today he was running around like it was a Captain’s run on a Friday afternoon. His pressure and want to tackle the opposition was non existent. He needs to learn to shorten the gap between his good and bad games. When he's on, he is very good, but when things aren't going his way, he gives up way too easily.

I wouldn't be averse to seeing Markov replace Noble. Both have speed and both are susceptible to turning it over by foot, however Markov seems to know his limitations and has less 'brain farts', like Noble running 20m out from a kick in, or failing to handball first option, or handballing to a player with an opponent half a metre away from them.

Ginnivan would've been a better selection than McInnes - Jack has footy IQ; Reef doesn't seem to have any outstanding attribute at AFL level that challenges AFL-standard defenders.

Cameron was also sub-standard. Hopefully Howe can return this season, as it might allow us to play Cox/Frampton as rucks as an alternative to the Cox/Cameron partnership, through use of the sub role.
