The players never stopped on the mark they kept running at him. It was 50m.

People lose their minds because of when this happened in the game. If it was 1st quarter when North were pumping us no one would care.

Spot on. There should have been 50m against Wardlaw who had run into the protected space before Bobby had kicked it in the 3rd. That wasn't called and would have put him 35m out. The Maynard tackle. The ball had already gone out with 2 umps right there who didn't call it. The players arms were free but made no attempt to get rid of it. And he landed on his elbow. Ditto with Xerri. The ball was OOB he was running to the boundary and got a little tap. Milked it for ll its worth.

Moore's g/f had COVID this week, wonder if he had it which made him even more laconic on his opponent than usual.
I'm not sure laconic would be the correct word to use given Moore's tendency to give long speeches.

Unless you're implying he mouthed off less than usual to his opponent...?

Look at the umpire. Hadn’t even blown the whistle until they were well over the “mark” so he couldn’t pay a 50.
Our guys were right to attack the player in 2 counts. 1, it was touch and go as to wether it was 15 metres. 2. They hadn’t heard a whistle.
As soon as they heard a whistle they both stopped and looked at the umpire, which allowed the Norf player to play on.
It’s all as clear as day on the video if you watch the umpire as well as the players.
Yeah looking at it the 2nd and 3rd time, it's clear our two thought (or made it look like they 'thought') it was a live ball in play and the ump hadn't blown the whistle yet. The ump blew a millisecond after the mark was taken and our two were already over where the mark (stand) would've been.

The ump then blew again paying the mark but then the north player immediately played on.

I have said this many times. Team lift and play their GF against the pies. Their best game for the year against the pies and then they are happy to lose by 7-10 goals the following weeks. Speaking to North supporters at the game, they said, North's best game in 15 years. (up until 3/4 time)
Look at Adelaide, Saints, Port, North and many others they lifted against us where are they now.
Looking forward to seeing North kick another 8 goal opening term next week or an 18.2 where every kick when through the big sticks.

Correct, it appeared a 50 but the players were already there and the mark had not been set yet either.
The North player should have stood still, then it would be 50.

Or how about they miss just 2-3 shots in the first half that they would normally miss and they lose by 2-3 goals!
Works for me!

Seriously though, do they thank the umpires for some mistaken calls that went their way during that run?
Or just blame them when players don’t execute?
It’s really bizarre (and conditioned) behaviour.

Anyway, we move on….4 points and a much needed and deserved break.

Fly's presser

That was one of the biggest comebacks in VFL/AFL history. What are your emotions after that?

In the second half, it looked like you threw the magnets around with Reef McInnes being substituted on and Jeremy Howe and Nick Daicos being shifted up forward. Did that give you the mix up you needed to get the game back on your terms?

Were you surprised Will Phillips was subbed out considering the strong tagging job he was doing on Nick Daicos?

Can you take us inside half time. What was discussed in the rooms and how did you turn it around?

You said you were 'chipping away', Clarko described it as "Russian roulette" footy when you're trying to win?

How proud are you of Nick Daicos to fight through the tag and be a significant player in your win?

How close was Nick Daicos from not playing? You made the decision to hold back Ed Allan from playing VFL.

How important is that game for Lachie Schultz?

Who's taken the better mark this year? Jamie Elliott or Bobby Hill?

You will be in the top 4 for the first time this season despite a slow start to the season and coming back from 54 points down today to win this match. What does this overall package do for the belief of the team heading into the second half of the season defending the Premiership?

Who do you expect to get back?

On Monday, you alluded to Brayden Maynard experiencing some personal challenges. He spoke about it on the TV broadcast. Can you give us your insight on how challenging it has been for him to play in the last two weeks?

You mentioned the guys coming back and you've only lost 1 game in this period. What does it do for the confidence of the guys after this good run you've had with these experienced guys close to returning?

What did you make of Tew Jiath?

Will Oleg Markov be available post-bye?

You've exposed a lot of youth in the last 6-8 weeks, but Harry DeMattia hasn't featured yet. Is he close?

Thanks for doing this Pons.
Awesome work.

Did anyone else notice the brief flash of surprise and annoyance when the “Russian roulette” comment was made.

Fly def took umbrage to that and looked visibly annoyed and disrespected by it. Hence his response of “method”.

Poor form from Clarko….who made the comment several times that we just got lucky.
Wish Fly had responded with “Takes two to tango in comming from that far down.”

Buts he’s way too classy for that.

Yep. There's a bunch of calls every game that are missed or incorrect.

I'm not sure what the AFL game review process is and with social media + the media always trying to find a story it gets pretty wild.

I figure it balances out over the season, you get some good your way to make up for the wrong calls. If you're playing well and winning you don't notice.

The xerri goal was awful. Even he was shocked. He didn't even dive just ran to the fence and than somehow ended up with a free kick.
24 has later in hindsight umpiring was bad but we probably got the rub.
But what is it? They are over instructed with the rule of the week imo and try to umpire based on circumstances of the game and when to crackdown and not
Just have the rules and apply them consistently
4 umps hasn’t helped with consistency as it’s just added another opinion to the interpretation. Ideally they need to remove some grey from the rules. Spun 360 equals prior for example.

I think north got the better of the debatable decisions (frees/non-frees). They got 4 goals in the first half and 1 goal in the third where a different decision would have changed that.

Don’t think distance was the issue, the Norf player took about 6 steps off his mark and then stopped when he saw 2 players bearing down on him. It’s the umpires fault for not calling play on when it was pretty clear that was his initial intention, but common sense prevailed when he realised he’d messed up and he didn’t penalise the Collingwood players who’d rightly seen him on the move and playing on.

I'd also suggest all 3 players were outside 5 metres from the mark, so they didn't really infringe at all.

We won. But let’s be honest it should never have been like this. North deserve massive credit for today. Tbh the pies need a lot of soul searching after today and not just focusing on the gutsy comeback.
Rather focus on why they were in that position to begin with.
Seems a bit dramatic. We were off and they were playing exceptionally well. Their pressure rating was over 200 in the 1st 2 quarters. It happens. It hasn’t been a common occurrence.

With the amount of players playing less that 10 and 20 games we have been relying on over the past number of weeks and to lose only 1 game during that period says a lot of this team.

You take 3 starting midfielders, and all key forwards (and a cool match winner in Elliott) out of any side and how would they perform? Not just for 1 week but 4 or 5 weeks.

It’s bound to catch up with the group.
But, they showed exceptional spirit to come back from 54 points down with plenty of experience out of that team.

How many teams have actually achieved a comeback like that when all momentum was against them?

I have to say the umpiring was pretty poor all around yesterday (no surprise given Fisher lol)

In that first half, I was staggered at the volume of delayed free kicks being paid. It was astonishing. Play just kept on going and they just up and decided up to 5 seconds later (or more) to just...pay a free and bring the ball back

There was just atrocious calls all over the place both for and against both sides as well as terrible missed stuff

Like yeah, we got away with some key ones in the last quarter (particularly a couple of throws), but then they got a bunch go their way in the first that gave them momentum to begin with

Two biggest **** ups were the touched crisp goal not called back and n daicos caught stone dead holding the ball at the end
Crisp’s was inconclusive, certainly not clear enough to overturn the original decision.

Nick had no prior and made an attempt = no free against for incorrect disposal. That’s the rule.

Nick had prior, but think they gave him the benefit of the doubt regarding whether or not he got a handball away.

That’s what we want, an umpire having a feel for the game and not being overly technical, especially when he made the mistake. I bet you Nicholls would have payed the 50m.

Just on that supposed ‘50’, it may be harsh, but at the time I was surprised with Nick’s decision to kick the ball off the ground where there really was only a North player. I thought in that moment the ball needed to be kept locked in and killed.

It's a hollow victory to be honest. Don't get me wrong, you'll take the points. But deep down, you know we didn't really deserve them.

Brother, life is too short to focus on the negatives. 2022 we had north run us ragged for three quarters. Yesterday was double the margin and then some. But, 54 points should not be run down in any competition. How many times in the last 10-20 years has it happened? Then ask yourself how North looked early? They are an explosive young side who might have found their niche gamestyle.

We could also say the Hawks game shouldn't have seen us get reeled in, either. But, look at their form of late? When north wins a few more games towards the tail end of the season, and they learn to hold a lead, we will see the immense effort we put in to save that game yesterday.

A reigning premier, whom i am guilty of questioning myself, is clearly what Fly and the boys are emulating perfectly. We have consolidated so much since round 2. Two draws are better than losses, a 1 point thriller is better than a 54 point loss, so take some heart, and enjoy the ride.

We are currently sitting third, lost 1 game since the saints loss, despite having an actual injury crisis.

There’s no soul searching needed. We’ve weathered a huge storm and made it to a much needed break, with troops to return slowly

I'll be the first person to blow up about the start yesterday but, considering the walking wounded, losing ONCE since round 2, then coming back from 9 goals down inside the third quarter, it's nuts. All those years 2014-17 when injuries would screw us, and yet Fly has us chipping away. I just hope the balance isn't thrown out by returning cattle.

Shoota misses a sitter in the 3rd, Howie hits the post in the last.
Let’s be honest we should’ve won by more.

That Howe poster was a decent effort. I was dragging myself around the aquarium following the missus and daughter, North had just kicked one to put them in front, and gave me vibes of West Coast getting pipped at the post last week. I honestly thought Jezza had missed our chance. Switched Kayo off when the missus went crook at me for checking, because I don't usually watch live footy, and added to the complete anxiety and anger from being confronted at the footy, that's unlikely to occur in the future. So yeah, got told to pay attention to the penguins instead, and missed Bobby's winner by 20 seconds 🙄

We had a more comfortable win on the Herald Sun expected score - 100 to 94:)

The bus driver in Geelong asked if it was going to be a 120 point win yesterday. I just quipped "who? For North?" Cue hysterics, but far out, both teams got close to 120 points. It's the commentators curse. Then the missus saying "try and enjoy yourself if you are losing today." Aaarrrggghhh... too much superstition and thought going into footy 🤡
