Autopsy Round 2, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs GWS

Good to see Ginbey work his way into it. Reid is so exciting though. What a talent.

I wasn’t necessarily sold on English but it’s becoming clear we need to throw big money at him. We desperately need someone to provide us with a marking option and an outlet when we get trapped in our defensive 50. Pair him with some runners (Hunt and JJ, even if his first game back was a shocker) and our ball movement and scoring potential is far more likely to be fully realised

+
  • If that game was last year, we would have lost by 100+ points and had to watch O'Neil, Foley, West, Clark etc. Today we fought it out and only one in that category could be LEdwards.
  • Ginbey hands on the ball. Mostly very good when handballing, kicking needs a lot of work
  • Chesser having the confidence to bounce back from some bad errors, shows character. Really want the club to keep persisting with him
  • Harley has showed his class in both first quarters to start the year. Once his tank gets to AFL standard it is going to be something else.
  • Gov and TB were very good. I prayer they stay healthy
  • Yeoy same as above
  • Work rate of Dalring, Waterman, Cripps and Long - they got smashed all day and delivery to them was poor, but they tried their guts out
  • Maric is such a natural footballer - takes the first option and keeps it simple.
  • What appears to be no injuries (although this time last week, we would have said the same....)

-
  • Skill errors are so costly, the amount of times we are out and turn the ball over through a simple mistake is hard to watch. Especially when the ball, goes coast to coast and GWS score
  • When we are as bad as we are, we need to convert every opportunity in front of goal - missed 3 or 4 really gettable ones

Overall
I think GWS are the best team in it at the moment and they were pretty well had a full team available - other than ward and haynes who are towards the bottom end of their best 23. To not be blown out is a real positive. Dogs away and then Sydney in Adelaide - the fixture really hasn't done us any favours.

Yes. The Flynn injury really blows.

I was totally against spending $$ on a ruckman, but am coming around to the idea of english.
It was probably the most devastating injury we could've got besides Harley. I was excited to have a regular competitive ruckman and simultaneously seeing B Williams develop as a power forward.

Not really impressed at all with Brockman.

Thought he'd be silky.

I should realise highlight packages are the best of the best then the gap to nothing is a big drop off

Really? He was absolute class. Has great poise and vision, controls time and creates space.
Thought that was very obvious but apparently not.
Look back on the highlights when Alesana does his thing.

Same.

Never really thought rucks were super important after Coxy because a bunch of three peat sides had crapola bash n crash rucks and thought that was better.

But, I think getting a decent ruck like English in would at worst give us a chance of breaking even

Last 2 weeks we've lost the hit outs by double pretty much so you are always watching instead of pro active

BBW has such a good leap I don't get how he can't at least smash it somewhere forward lol

Tim Kelly’s first two games this season have been really, really poor.

Guess I saw different bits. Dunno, guess it's only early.

Hope he develops

Yeah i just feel like investing in the ruck is moreso investing in the development of our young mids.

Can't wait to see Flynn in the team.

Which players aren't equipped for the game? Ginbey and Reid were great. Chesser had a good second half after starting poorly (13 disposal second half). Hough already looks like our best half back.

Barnett needs a couple more pre seasons so I'll give him a pass. Edwards is a bit slow but we drafted at pick 50 odd for him, so not much loss
Yeah probably didn't nail the comment down, was really referring to the playing group drafted before Ginbey, Reid etc. Seems like there is a big 3 year hole where some players should be. There is the odd bloke who might make it but overall the talent is pretty thin in the 22-25 age group.

Ginbey was handy but a bit depressing that we’re getting excited by his 22 disposal game when GWS just rolled another one off their production line in Harvey Thomas.

18yo in his third game with 28 disposals at 71% DE, 8 tackles, 4 marks and 1.2. Looks a similar player to Noah Long but he looks a mile off putting up similar numbers to that.

Our players don't have the luxury of spending years in the academy of the club they get drafted to,

There are green shoots for sure.

I can't wait til we are actually exciting to watch.

I like that we tried a fee things. We stuffed up but once things start rolling it'll gel and be amazing for the whole game not just 5 mins.

Long way off

Easy to look good when you are flogging the opposition though.

This annoys me too.

For all the "green shoots" all the other teams are blooding similar and mainly better (stat/result wise) kids

We almost need to blood 2 good kids to every teams 1

For those that didn’t notice I thought Hough on Greene was absolutely outstanding. Particularly with the amount of time the ball spent in their half.

JJ is NOT AFL standard and one of him or Cole needs to make way for Burgiel next week.

Ive been a Cole supporter for a while however he isnt the future. His kicking is not up to modern day standards and no wonder we cant transition from defense. At some stage Burgiel needs to come in and see what he can add.

We need a gun rebounding half back. And a CHF.

This is true too.

When we were winning back in the day a kid or 2 would get a game and look pretty good.

It's obviously easy to play well in a good side

It's almost like we're the worst team in the comp, and by comparison our players, including our younger ones are not getting the numbers of players that are in the teams that are all better than us.

INCONCEIVABLE!

He had 21 touches but it’s also a lot easier to put those numbers up when your side is elite. Ginbey putting them numbers as a primary mid for us is whats actually pleasing. This is the first step in the right right direction imo. Next is is to tidy up his disposals and put up games like today consistently

Mixed feelings. Definitely showed improvement in a range of areas. Still so far off the standard that it's worrying.

Our skills would have most WAFL coaches pulling their hair out. GWS execute the basics orders of magnitude better which makes them look 3 or 4 steps ahead of the game.

A huge lift by a lot of players and still 10 goals down at the buzzer. We can only improve if we keep showing the effort of today

Positives
  • Yeo was back to his old beast mode stuff. Runs out of puff though still but will be better for the run
  • Hough was great in a lock down role on Toby Greene. Bobbed up to kick their first but was otherwise a non-event thanks to Brady’s efforts.
  • Barnett wasn’t totally disgraced despite being out bodied by a mature ruck in Briggs.
  • Gov & Barrass duo far better today. TB chose the right time to spoil and then the right time to intercept.
  • As mentioned above that is now the expectation for Ginbey (~20 possessions/game). Hopefully takes some confidence out of that performance.
Negatives
  • Sam Taylor absolutely tearing us a new one down back. Throw whatever it takes at him to get him back to WA and into the blue & gold.
  • Otherwise slick ball movement let down by an inexcusable skill error. Absolutely infuriating to watch it all fall apart live at the game.
  • I know we suck but I’m not sure the AFL umpiring department are willing to give us an even break. We won the free kick count (which just feeds into the moron’s narrative about “noise of affirmation”) but there were some galling inconsistencies in interpretations today. When the ump put the whistle to his mouth but didn’t blow for the high fend off against Green I knew it wasn’t our day.
  • Two rounds in (excluding Mickey Mouse opening round) and we’ve copped the biggest losing margin in each of those rounds. Percentage is again <50% just like last year.
