Review Round 20 = Collingwood 76-93 Carlton

I thought we were pretty good in the second half, but blew our chances up forward and Carlton got a bit lucky up their end.

The concerns:
Looks like teams have learnt to load up around the contest to stifle our run.

And to almost play our tall defenders like forwards with early aggressive body contact.

Midfield pace

Overall
Because we've been the best, our style has been targeted. We'll need to make some tweaks. Good time to find out.
I agree we need some tweaks. But the flip side to that is teams adjusting to try And beat us, also means they are going away from how they play. It does work both ways. Despite how poor we played kick straight and we win.

That’s how it goes sometimes

Form of Cox, and you could now include Mihocek.

Outside of form, Cox is still not an ideal forward, just doesn't move well enough, but I don't think we have an ideal mix if we also want a second ruck.
We took 18 marks I50. That does not indicate great problems up forward.
We don’t need to dump Brodie, he had a poor game and has plenty of credits.

Cox is a 2nd Ruckman primarily and unless we have a very capable substitute in that role who can also play fwd better than Cox, then he’ll be kept in the team.

He’s just more of an outside player at this stage of his career. Think he needs to be moved back to half back where he can receive the ball in more space.
Agree, I would play him back at HB for remainder of the H&A games, then start to inject him back into the midfield come finals.

Definitely not suggesting we drop Mihocek. Definitely suggesting we consider dropping Cox. Both his forward work and ruck work were poor against the Blues and second ruck just isn't important enough to play someone who's doing nothing in their other role. I think he's worth playing when performing, but he's not.

Disagree the footage was inconclusive, it was the original umpire’s call which screwed us.
BT called it there was a gap from the front view. I agree had the goal ump said goal, review it, it would have went our way. But the front view was conclusive. The side or original view did not show fingers deviating. When it's touched you usually see some movement. Seeing the side angles didn't allow for a clear decision but the front view was clear.

I agree. I'm more just suggesting that those adjustments against us have brought us back to the pack, rather than being well ahead of the pack. We're still the team to beat, but it's not going to be a cakewalk.

We may well have plans to deal with these, but maybe there is no reason to reveal our hand given that we are guaranteed top 4? Maybe Fly has a few tricks up his sleeve for finals.

Another thing to consider is Carlton are a good side when they are up and going. Curnow and Weitering are the best book ends in the competition and they’ve got the reigning Brownlow Medalist in the middle. Martin back playing well and Marchbank is highly rated and played his first game in a long time. We were lucky to beat them twice last year so they usually play well against us.
I’m starting to look at it as a loss to a good side on a day we looked very flat and gave them a few chances we wouldn’t normally allow. Hoping we are buzzing over the next few weeks after this one.

Had a very large brim
Were very flat actually from "carrying the can" on their head.
It always made me laugh that swearing of any kind was frowned upon when I was a youngen, but you could tell anyone, anytime, even in Church,
about the shitcarter dropping the shit can off the shit truck.

"Heavy loaded training" in preparation for finals.

My novice assumption after the few times i've heard this term brought up is that the team goes hard at training for a period of time to maximise fitness and then tapers off later.
Can someone give me some clarification on this and are we actually doing it, and if we are, can it be a reason for last nights performance.

We are blessed that we have a tough run in that allows us to adjust things and become battle hardened in preparation for finals. Last night and the remaining games will do us the world of good. I’m still tipping us for the flag.

Just wondering if we got a bit cocky last night.

Is there a Lil bit of arrogance creeping in? If so would that loss have been the needed reality check?

Nows not the time to be all warm and fuzzy with the playing group, nor saying tear the paint off but be blunt and honest with them.

No, every player must buy in to the defensive side of the game, otherwise you may as well give it away.

Nick had moments last night that he would love again. He's far from soft though and i'm sure when it's his time to go next week, he'll crack in 100%.

He has so many credits in the bank this season, it's not even funny. If teams are just going to tag him through the midfield then i'd like to see us push him back, forward or even on to a wing.
Don’t get me wrong.
He’s not soft.
He goes when he needs to.
He’s so clean and smart that he’s usually avoiding the player and taking the ball…when it doesn’t happen, he “looks soft”…but he’s not.

My point was more around the minimum defensive effort of a midfielder. He doesn’t meet it.

Whatever we do, we need the ball in his hands 30 times a game…at the moment I think that’s HB.

We were trending down the Maynard Trash Talk Gradient, and therefore arrogance was actually in decline after the previous week. Perhaps we needed more arrogance to creep in?

We seemed disconnected and tried a lot of fancy plays alas none turned out,
Missing so many easy shots hurt us and also the confidence of the team,
I think in a weird way we learnt some lessons from last nite,
We move on and I trust the coaches with September coming.
Have faith pie fans.

And some people are too quick to dismiss structural/selection flaws and poor effort/attitude/skills as “bad luck” or “just not our night”, etc.

Geelong, Brisbane and Essendon would all have no fear going into their respective matches with us in coming weeks. Every team in the hunt believes we’re gettable.

We’re now back in the pack of 4-5 contenders. We can definitely still win it but we are no longer clear favourites.

We were always in a pack with other contenders.
