Autopsy Round 23, 2023 : Hawks fall to the Demons

My highlight today was the obvious progress on show from Big Noodle

The little glimpses of what might be with HH, Ramma and Ned Long

The combative and competitive nature of our efforts, standing up to Melbourne's superior experience and strength, and tactical assurance in defense after quarter time.

We didn't have much going our way after quarter time (and after our high possession game in the first quarter) but we fought and hung in there, we took risks and we made absolutely sure the Dees earned it.

The umpires made it comfortable for the Dees in the end, but without Lewis and Newk we were starting a lot further back than just a top 4 side versus a bottom 4 side.

Green shoots for next year.

Given who we played, I’m ok with how they went about it - improve the disposal and who knows

Impressed with HH - great debut

Laughable that Oliver’s “handball” is a testament to how he “worked” his way in to the game and yet Breust gets pinged for a throw (it was but so was Oliver’s) -summed up the interpretations for the day

Great to see Worpel lead the clearances - was good all day, just need to acknowledge that he has limitations with the fend off and how fast he thinks he is

Last few years we've let them get a run on and been blown out of the water. Kept it under 30 pts with key players missing while they were pretty much full strength. I'm happy with that, building nicely.

Melbourne - Hawthorn
27 Hit-outs 33
26 clearances 35
11 Centre clearances 13
15 Stoppage Clearances 22

Add Newcombe, MacKenzie & at some point Stephens to that mix. Think of how good the Hawthorn midfield will be in 2-3 years time.

I love Weddle. He is every bit an AFL player. Looks so confident and in control out there. Fantastic rookie year.
Hustwaite looked terrific especially, early. Got that look about him.
Cam Mackenzie has also had a great year.

Last year's draft could be fundamental to our future success with these three.

HH, Weddle and CMac were the best of the youngsters. Blanck again very solid and Dimma should be the AA back pocket. Worpel, Nash and Noodle were excellent.

Not enough from Ward today. He’s too good to have 8 touches. Ball use from some senior players let us down but overall a huge positive. They benefitted from most of the 50/50 calls and got a few absolute gifts as well.

Wrap up anyone who is sore and give HH, Longy and Serong another run next week.

Im going with the Ollie Robinson/Ben Stokes on this one
' it felt like we won '

Seriously gallant effort from the guys .
Thought a few of the lads looked flat/tired.
I know we have one more game but very excited for next season

If we want to continue this improvement we may need to make a pretty tough list decision or two

Proud of our efforts today!

We were in this game from the start even with the loss of Lewis, Newcombe and Wingard.

Super coach also listed Day as injured during the last qtr. so anther Hawk out for 2023?

Impressed with Hustwaite and Ramsdens game. An Serong looked good in defence.

Really excited for our list to be fine tuned with more talent and for us to win a top 8 spot in 2024.

I thought Grainger-Barras competed really well. That was definitely his best game as a forward. Coming up against a strong Melbourne defence, his effort was good. A full pre-season to improve on his endurance will work wonders for him.

Like Dermie just said we made them play well to beat us.

Yep. Despite our ladder position we are playing like a side that is on the cusp of finals contention. Not quite top 6 but around the 7-10 mark.

I reckon that was about as good as could have expected realistically. I wish we could stop the red time goals because we always seem to leak them but that will come.

Worps was good, Reeves was good, HH made a nice start. I think that was DGBs best game? Thought Weddell was good and Scrim was good in the first half in particular.

Not bad.

Looking at Amons stats you’d think he had a nice game. He was playing kick to kick all game, and when he did try a more risky kick, the dees would take it down the other end and score. Very un-Amon like game

Yeah he had a bad game because the things he normally does every week that are basically incredible didn’t happen today. That’s not putrid.

That was good, stuck with one of the best teams in the league, a team that could possibly be marching to their second flag in three years, for three and a bit quarters. Without our best midfielder and best tall forward. Umps made certain of it for them, and some execution issues that will improve with experience (feel like a broken record, we have to find a way to stop kicking directly to the opposition over and over).
Overall, the future still looks extraordinarily bright.
