Effort was terrific.

Couldn’t fault the way the boys played today and those cheap late time goals freo got did not make a single dent in the pride of the effort.

Ginbey, excellent again. Just so tough at it always.

Hunt is starting to become one of my favourites. I love how hard he works and that finish on the run was excellent.

Hewett, long both kick those goals this time next year. Hopefully both get an extended run at it.

Stat sheet is probably ugly but I think BBW played the best game of his career today. Really pleased with his workrate and broke even for the very vast majority of the game against a very good ruck.

Ginbey and Long look natural. Hewitt will be a lot better for the run.

Just super proud of the lads. I'll admit I wrote them off at half time given the injuries and Freo's apparent dominance in the second term.

Have we turned a mental corner?

Positives

Spirit, attitude and effort

SPS - was outstanding and classy

OA and JD - both had periods of domination

Midfield and ruck - competed even though had all the odds stacked against

Ginbey and Long - already can say you know what to expect from them

Chesser - best game for the club (still a ways to go)

Duggan - demonstrated why he is rated as a leader.

WITHO - Has been a whipping boy unfairly IMO. That was as courageous an act as you'll see on a footy field

Negatives

Hewitt missed shots - he's got something about him and this is harsh but both missed shots and particularly that running one were so deflating. A first goal from a first year player could have really given us a lift.

Sheed - his start this season has been worrying. Has been overtaken by Ginbey as an inside mid and you'd think Culley may pass him as well if given a run at it

Injuries - horrible luck but you've got to say our strategy of playing older injury prone players will result in injuries on the balance of probability. But my gosh the Cripps, Ryan and Witho injuries were horrible luck

Nah. Simmo keeping his job this year was really lucky.

Right now we are by far and away the worst Eagles team in our history and a lot of that is Simmos fault.
Can't argue with the effort for the last 2 weeks. Thats not a sign hes lost the players. And the gameplan has / is changing.

That's all you can ask for as a supporter. Heart and effort. Theirs deadwood around and that will take time to filter out.

Negative: the amount of carry-on from some of the guys in the game day thread about umpires, who is and isn't a spud, etc.

Guys - chill. We're rebuilding. Winning games is secondary to being competitive, which is what we were today. The usual whipping boys like Gaff and Sheed most likely won't even be in the side when we start talking about finals again. Just focus on how the kids are doing and how the gameplan is evolving.

As for Freo - if this is the side that's supposed to push for a flag in the next 1-3 years then I'm not worried by what I'm seeing right now.

Someone needs to take Hewett aside and just have a very quiet word with him that at this level, you earn your swagger. You can have all the figjam in the world, after you kick the goals.

The good news is that he kinda reminds me of another kid like that who got drafted early and also had a lot of early misses and a ton of youthful exuberance: Christian Petracca. Suffice to say, he turned out ok

Plenty to work with in Elijah. He gets to the right spots, he just has to finish it off. But that will come

The fact freo didnt win by 60-70+ all while pounding their chests and doing flips 23v18 with whom 4 are 18, they should be embarrassed

The kids show heart, i like this
My gosh I hate criticising the opposition but those celebrations were way over the top. We literally sent Ryan out there when he wasn't fit or mentally really ready to be out there.

I'm really looking forward to the next derby. Never hated Freo before but I guess their ungraciousness has added some spite to the contest

I'm not sure about 'played the best game of his career today' but he was not notably shit, which I would count as a win on a day you expect our rucks to be dominated

Grass is always greener for some.

Imagine if we had Hinkley for 11 years?

Positives
Resilience and buy in. Off the charts.
Gaff, Kelly really lifted particularly without Shuey out there.
SPS is in the form of his life.
Ginbey will be the inside mid monster we will build our midfield around. Most tackles in the league 20 disposals 13 contested we got a good one.
3rd quarter was as good as the 8 goal one last week.
Noah Long is a steal. Composed beyond his years.
Negatives
Injuries. 5 maybe 6 in a game is world record pace. Think Cripps and Give are long-term too.
Hard to fault apart from the second quarter which was poor. With 17 fit players it was expected to drop away in the last.

Hewitt missed shots - he's got something about him and this is harsh but both missed shots and particularly that running one were so deflating.

That running goal he should of nailed it, I don’t care that we lost and I’m proud of the way we went about it but that missed shot on the run really has deflated me for some reason no excuses there

only two real negatives

The umpiring and the injuries

The players showed heart. All 18 blokes playing thrift at the end deserve a beer. Ryan probably two for playing through

The umpiring was horrendous.

Positives
Ginbey
Hunt
Long
SPS
BBBBBBBW!

Nothing compares to 2010 IMO, not even 2022.
2022 was a way worse year than 2010. In 2010 we looked like we had pieces of a side, and proved to be the case.

This team has aging stars, aging players plodding along, List fillers, a few of kids that are 3 games into their careers but look good and Oscar Allen.

SPS was really good for you guys, thought your team put up a valiant performance and deserved to win. You would’ve won without injury. Oscar Allen was also huge and I think Kelly is getting back to his best (although today was an almost game for him)

Simpson is not done and is figuring out how to coach the latest style, that shows humility and intelligence. Here’s hoping you don’t have long term injuries out of today.

Long and Ginbey were great, Hewitt was ok and it was another game ticked off for Chesser and he did find more footy.

SPS and Hunt have both strengthened our side. SPS was clearly labouring for the first half of last year and wouldn't have played if our list wasn't a mess.

Good signs from Oscar early on.

Gaff showed leadership with his running power and willingness to tackle and do a job. Sheed on the other hand was very poor both with and without the ball. He and the injuries are the only real negatives for mine.
