I'm not sure about 'played the best game of his career today' but he was not notably s**t, which I would count as a win on a day you expect our rucks to be dominated
Happy to hear about his better games where he took it up to all Australian contending ruckman.

Most of the positives have been mentioned.

I have a couple of negatives which to be honest have been around for quite a long period of time.
First one is the inability of our forwards to separate and find space to lead into. Just as JK and JD did it looks as though OA and JD are all still leading or jog trotting to the same spot and making just so easy for any defence. With our centr breaks I find they are not even leading, they are just calling for it deep and high. This needs serious work.

Our own defence are still not being accountable for a man and are still prepared to give their man 5-10m of space. When you are transitioning to a quicker ball moment game plan then this relies on absolute lockdown one on one defence. I think it’s another area that needs serious attention but keeps being ignored.

Other than that I was pretty proud of the boys today. It blew out a bit but not to worried about that. Tough games ahead but hopefully it will be a good learning for the young blokes. I really hopeee just keep trying to play as we are. Don’t go back because we have injuries.

That was a great game in the sense of seeing the character in the team and the lessons it teaches the youngsters. A number of them really shone (Ginbey, BBW, Long) and Hewett showed potential but learnt some good lessons.

We win that guaranteed if we had at least two on the bench.

Umps were bad all day. Gave us some cheapies early and then had a nightmare in the last.

Freo are just embarrassing. Any other team with 4 fit players would beat them. They'll be lucky to win any of their next 4. Walters is an absolute joke, either stages for a free or seagulls off other player's hard work.

Shit Freo supporters say:

I’d be pretty proud of that effort in the 3rd from the toast…if it wasn’t on the back of a complete felt covered armchair ride from the umpires.

Also Pav, * you for openly barracking for them during that while only commenting on decisions that benefited them. You literally gave me the physical shits and I missed the last 10 mins and Freddy’s celebration.

They are mentally unable to deal with the fact that they got a ride from the umps and that Pav openly barracks for their mob.

Hell, there was on epoint when Healy asked Pav what a loss would mean for Freo and he took around 10 seconds to process it before responding.

FK This Shite.

Positives +

- SPS was one of our bests
- Shuey was providing the grunt and was really good before getting injured.
  • The fightback shown when we had no one left on the bench at one point.
  • Ginbey showing why he's an inside beast but needs some support from other inside beasts game high 8 tackles and goes hard at the footy.
  • Still in potential contention for H.Reid.
  • Long continues to impress me with his decision making, clean hands and overall hardness. Good things happen when he's near the ball.
  • Hewitt looks good and will continue to improve. May have a higher ceiling than Ginbey. I just needs composure and class.
  • Barrass standing up when Gov went down after playing poorly for the first two weeks.
  • Hurn providing some rebounds and was usually clean under pressure. Was really good playing as an undersized KPD when Gov went down.
  • Hunt was good and he gave us running rebound.
  • Duggan also was good with his running and with his defensive work.
  • Kelly did well in the middle and used the ball well.
  • Much better effort from the team despite getting smashed in the hitouts

Meh

  • Gaff started off slowly and was poor in the first half but he stood up in the second half relentlessly coming at them. Still the odd annoying round the corner kicks even while in space though but showed more effort.
  • Allen and Darling started off strongly but faded as the game went on. Allen is still rusty at times but looks good. Didn't really lead enough. Allen and Darling's chemistry needs more work in leading at the ball carrier especially winning the centre clearance.
  • Chesser didn't look ready in the first half but was decent in the second half. Starting to get used to the pace of the game.
  • B.Williams competed well in the ruck and nullified Darcy and Jackson's taps despite getting destroyed in the ruck.
  • Ryan may have been poor, couldn't take marks and looked lazy pre injury but despite not looking physically ready or mentally ready to come out, he came out in the last, just so we can have a rotation left.

Negatives -

  • Sheed was too fumbly, too slow and can't stick his tackles. We can't keep running those one paced players in this new WCE era.
  • Injury hell. Lost Shuey, Gov, Witherden and Cripps. Had no rotations left at one point.
  • Jones was down from last week but may have been tagged.
  • Bullsh*t non high call on Ryan killed our momentum. Plus umpiring was trash.

Final Thoughts

We played well and early on they killed us on the turnover with their speed but our contested ball work was superior. I don't blame Hewitt for missing but even though he scored, they would've overrun us at the end as we had no gas left due to having one and even no rotations near the end. Freo should be more concerned though, that win for them is a wallpapering win. Not surprised if they get exposed next week.

They are delusional if they think they are going anywhere. Good.luck.to.them

Plenty of sides ahead of them with similar list profiles. It has failed attempt to climb the summit written all over it.

Pity.

Positives

  • Ginbey, Hewitt, Long all look like players
  • We played good footy
  • Shuey, Gov, Cripps injuries. Not upset being forced to play kids. Harley Reid is possible. He could be a game changer. Sorry, not sorry. An opprtunity to get games into Hoff, Culley, Bazoid.
  • OA. Even though he faded, he looks good.
  • Still in the hunt for Reid.
  • Duggan and Cole. By no means superstars, but they're starting to look okay again. Rotham is a distant memory.

Negatives

- Chesser. Looks crabby. But there are plenty of players who start slow before they find their feet.

Essentially our kids look okay, we're playing a decent brand of footy, and Reid is still in play. It's all good in the hood.

Positives-
No one left on the bench and we were still balls deep in that at 3/4 time. Probabĺy the best 40pt loss we've ever had.

I'm actually excited to watch the forced acceleration of our rebuild with Gov out for Bazzo/Edwards, Shuey for Hewett/Culley, Cripps for Petch, and Witherden for Hough. It's probably better for the future if we lose with those guys than pinch a couple of ultimately meaningless wins with Shuey and Gov BOG.

It looks like we nailed the hell out of the draft. Ginbey and Long aren't playing because we're rebuilding, they're legit best 22 and will be for a long time.

Negatives-
JJ didn't have it as easy today. After killing GWS, I hope he's good enough to overcome the extra attention he's likely to get from now on.

Injuries the obvious negative, but a lot of positives.

  • All our youngsters seem to have a real competitive streak. Chesser built into the game despite the knock earlier in the game; Long and Ginbey didn't stop trying. Hewett had some regrettable misses, but didn't seem to drop his head. Future looks bright.
  • SPS really impressed me with his composure and ball use last week. He carried that into this week, but also did a lot of really solid defensive/1% work.
  • Darling and Allen didn't stop presenting all day.
  • Even when we were down to 1 rotation, we didn't stop looking for overlap run and didn't go back to the chip/mark gameplan.
  • We switched off after Shuey got hurt, but managed to arrest the slide and get back on top. I don't think that would've happened in the past couple of seasons.
  • I thought Bailey competed well as our only specialist ruck.
  • Being that competitive under those circumstances will hopefully give them the self-belief and resilience that we had in '18. Coming up against Oliver, Petracca, Viney and Grundy will be a big test next week - while I don't expect us to win, it'd be a massive step forward if we could bring the same energy against them.

I love the spirit and fight they showed. It doesn't bother me that we lost given where we are in the cycle. The fight and commitment is what counts.

Shuey is done. Rehab him and bring him back for a handful of farewell games by all means. But lets face reality - his body is breaking down and Father Time has caught up with him. Every time he does a hammy there is more scare tissue in the muscle making the next tear more likely. It is very sad and he has been a great player. But the club needs to face reality over the durability of the playing core over 30 that they have bet so heavily on.

McGovern should be offered no more than two years. At maybe 800k a year. Injuries will start becoming more frequent for him too. He won't be happy with that. I bet he asks for three years on current money which is supposedly $1.2 million a year. Can't pay him that. If somebody else offers him 3 years or two years at $1.2 mil and he wants to take it then good luck to him. No hard feelings. Thanks for all you have given us and you are welcome at the club any time in retirement. But today is a reminder of why we can't pay him that kind of money anymore.

Probably the most positive 7 goal loss I can ever recall.

Aside from injury and hit outs, the only place the club did lose was on the scoreboard.

Gameplan held up and played sustainably for the second week in succession (until everyone ran out of gas).

-50 hit outs and 50% less rotations, yet won in the middle.

Youngsters all took another step forward as well.

15 of Fremantle's 16 goals in the match came directly from West Coast turnover or free kick. Against superior opponents (and equal rotations) where possession is not given up so readily in dangerous positions, they are going to end up on the receiving end of some very humbling losses unless they address the gaping deficiencies in their contested game.

Fremantle won today, but the team taking a step towards a premiership was not wearing purple.

+ve
1. Good effort by most of the players.
2. Hunt confirmed again to be an excellent recruitment.

-ve
1. Sheed still confused with the terms EFFORT and ENERGY. I am sure he finished today‘s game with plenty of energy left.
2. Injuries!
3. I don‘t think it is a good idea to have a born and bred WA umpire for the derby. You would assume an umpire like this will be either a Dockers‘ supporter or an Eagles‘ supporter.

Positives:

  • Spirit and effort. So much to love. If that sort of determination can be replicated throughout the season and imprinted thoroughly on all of our young players this year and beyond, this season will be a success regardless of ladder position.
  • Performances by the new kids. Ginbey already a beast, Long does something good virtually every time he gets the ball, Hewett promising, Chesser improving - 11 games between them and already looking great for our future. When fit and ready bring on Hough, Bazzo, Burgiel, Barnett too.
  • Oscar's first quarter - sustained success is coming
  • Witherden's courage - hope no serious damage from it
  • Jayden Hunt - a really good pick up for us
  • Samo Petrevski-Seton - loving his last two games, looking forward to more of it
  • Kelly good again
  • Williams a good effort despite the lopsided hitouts count
  • Gaff playing more within his limitations and actually nailed a tackle or two
Negatives:

  • Injuries. In the long run it means more games into younger players sooner, but after the carnage of 2022 surely we deserve a better run with injuries than this.
  • Missed shots at goal - culprits both young and experienced
  • Umpiring - appalling inconsistency
  • Fremantle fans. There are some pretty dirty players running around in the competition. Gaff on the other hand had one out of character brain snap (a very bad one, granted), for which he was penalised by missing a premiership, and yet he still has to be booed every time he goes near the ball for the rest of his career.
  • Final margin flattered Fremantle and doesn't reflect our effort against the odds.
