Autopsy Round 6, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Fremantle

Neg, oppo no longer thinking they have an easy game when they play us.
Weird to say.
Good thing we got 4 of the better teams out of the way already, 5 Inc tonight.

After Carlton defeated GWS today, Fremantle came into Derby 58 with the best average contested possession differential in the competition.

They had minimal injury concerns, an extra day of rest and plenty of reason to be breathing fire after repeat close losses from winning positions.

Instead, West Coast won contested possessions by 24.

To provide further context, the +38 contested possessions against Richmond last week was the first time the club had gone +20 in that statistic since Round 12, 2021 (defeating Carlton at the SCG).

Such performances back-to-back had not occurred for the club since Round 21, 2018 (the McGovern goal after siren game vs Port).

Until today, that is.

Something seismic is underway here. The current turnaround in contested possessions is quite staggering.

Especially when you consider that over the past five seasons, ranking top 4 in contested possession differential correlates with a 75% rate of success of a team finishing either top 4 on the ladder or final 4 in finals.

Now of course correlation is not causation, but it is an additional encouraging piece of information that things are on the right track.

Or to put it another way, here is what contested possession differential at the club has looked like since 2018 - the recent period of improvement is clearly apparent.

Not bad for a club that a month ago was apparently in the need of a 10 year rebuild.

Now watch those priority pick discussions vaporise if this continues to hold.

Midnight replay?
Back-to-back weddings. Avoided the score entirely. Home around 12.

“I’ll just watch a quarter and pick the rest up tomorrow,” he reckons.

Love the boys. Love you all.

Positives
Not that it's ever been an issue, but getting it up for the wife wont be a problem tonight.
My wife gets me. She sent this text some time during the 3rd quarter "You need to sleep somewhere else if they win. You'll be all kinds of ****ed up"

She was right. Just got home now. Couch time 🤣

So, after missing the only home win last year due to my dad rudely being born that day 70 years ago, I went the best part of 2 years without witnessing an Eagles victory. Now 2 in 2 weeks, with about as many goals kicked in those 2 weeks as we have kicked in the last 2 seasons total. That was cause for celebration!

Read this before as the warm up

So much egg on face after some of these predictions
That’s really some delicious reading.

Is it time to break open the Chardonnay?
A milestone win for the ages!
All the dots finally joining up, a real team effort, even players that have been out of sorts stood up. We have a fully invested team! They believe and they're hungry.
The pressure was outstanding.
My only slight neg - ol' clunky Jack, he did better, 2 goals, but what's with all the glitchy dropped marks each week?
