Round 6: Changes Vs Bulldogs

Geez they are flat. I think Bevo is a bit unhinged with his player versatility but interestingly enough, they were a full year younger and 20 games less experienced than Carlton last week. They are really young but very capable on their day. I'll be nervous going into this one for sure.
I dont like it, whats the bet later in the week, Bevo makes a stand and it starts this week against Freo and they are all fired up ready to take down the docker juggernaut this weekend. Weve had so many statement games against us over the years.

I think they will be fired up (they should be) but I still think we are a better side, especially in Perth. Having competent forwards is the real difference between the sides.

Lobb has been fantastic for us in the ruck and had big impact against GWS
its a big ask to have him carry the ruck solo continuously and we risk of injury to another quality forward option
Im hoping that we can get Darcy match fit and mobile so they can share the load
Darcy looked good, fitter and leaner than ever pre season and not sure what happened where he suddenly looked sluggish and unable to cover ground but hoping it was just a niggle he can get over quickly

Anyone wanting Brayshaw to be dropped needs to look closer at what they're trying to do with him. As said by other posters, he's a 19yo playing inside mid, having to do a lot of heavy lifting. Most players that young are playing outside or in the 2's. He's clearly got an elite footy brain and knows what he's trying to do, a few times he's just been rushed or under pressure. I have no doubt he'll be a gun. The pressure he brings is immense and you can see players using him, which is a good sign that the team trusts him.

Also, being used in the midfield, his running load is higher than if he was eased in via a half back flanking role. While he is young and has no tank, his legs are going to feel more fatigued when it comes to kicking, than Cerra (for example) and the more developed midfielders around him.

Darcy copped a big thigh knock pretty early against North Melbourne. He probably shouldn't have played the Suns game at all, he was noticeably struggling/hobbling around with a lot of padding. But you would think that's plenty of time now.

Perhaps Lobbs ruck form is keeping him out now, hope Lobb doesn't get resentful about that (he doesn't seem the type however).

That being said it would be good to rest him and Cerra before they start fatiguing too much, maybe not just yet but around Rd 7-8 then possibly again around rd17/18 especially if we are headed for finals.

You don't want to see too many changes to that team but some are forced and Conca needs to be replaced - he is playing Blakelys role and IMO stinking it up with his poor decision making and kicking causing turnovers and costing us goals each week. Blakely though has no WAFL match practice so probably needs another week for that. Tom North is probably the most consistent mid/HBF we have at WAFL who has not had a chance yet and is a fairly big unit so could be given one or two weeks before Blakely or Bewley is ready. Hughes has been playing well and think he could also be tried rotating mid to HBF maybe with North.

McCarthy back in is obvious but if Cox stays that risks us being too tall (even more so for those asking for Darcy back in). Our game style now is fast rebound and mobile forwards. Could be interesting though to see Cox and McCarthy rotate through Dumans half back position.

Out: Duman (susp). Conca
In: McCarthy, North (inside mid/HBF)

Keeps changes to a minimum and rewards performance (or lack of it).

That's three quality tests.

Different situations also:

- McCarthy (based on form) is an immediate in but health wise doesn't appear guaranteed.

- Blakely probably the most guaranteed, but there's no identifiable midfielder to come out unless he's a straight swap for Duman or Cox.

- Logue has spent the longest time injured overall, and probably needs a hit or two in the seconds. However he is the most reasonable replacement for Duman.

Might only be Blakely for Duman at this stage. Our forward line played so well last week that there might be a reluctance to throw an underdone McCarthy in, despite his form at present.

Seriously Conca out? Why?????
Because if you make 1 or 2 bad decisions in a game that supporters remember its a justification for omitting someone on big footy. Meanwhile back in the game Conca's hardness and defence edge has been supremely underrated all season. Im pretty sure he rotated on both Whitfield and Kelly on the weekend and significantly impacted their ability to deliver the ball into the forward fifty.

To all of those replacing Duman with McCarthy or a mid, who plays the shut down role on the Bulldogs small forward? Or don’t they have any?

Their forward line is piss poor really. Only guy I'm remotely worried about is Aaron (although he could actually play KPD). Gowers/Dicko/McLean etc ain't much chop.

Bevo was so desperate last game he had two of his main mids in Libba/Macrae stationed down there for decent parts of the game (both did nothing).

Saying we can’t replace Duman with Blakely because Blakely can’t play a shutdown role is as silly as suggesting playing Logue as a midfielder.

Duman was 100% in the team more for his rebound than shutdown ability. Blakely literally played the same role all last season.

If it was Ryan or Hughes I’d be leaning towards Nyhuis or Logue but it isn’t.

Personally I think Blakely is in the same category as Fyfe, Walters, Mundy and others in that you dont go wasting time with them in the 2's. I think some might have forgotten how good he is.

Would be a good learning experience for the others watching him destroy everyone at that level I suppose

I just hope you guys play Tom North ASAP.Have seen this boy grow up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne playing at the Heathmont club in the EFL and in junior wise always played 1 grade above his grade which has helped his development.A tremendous boy with a great attitude and injuries restricted him last year at Peel.
I think a lot of us would like to see him get a game but it might start to get hard the rest of the year with Blakely and Hill to come into the midfield at some point. I imagine he gets a game at some point through injury or a rest
