So important to get the win. We just need to stay ahead of the ledger, things are changing so often this season. Get a win here, with Hannebery back the next week, injuries, form etc who knows maybe we get Port on a good day?

Usually I wouldn't give us a prayer to win either but it's just such a strange season.

I think the selection of Ryder, Ross, Byrnes and all selection policy are a reflection on the importance to our game plan of the midfield, our problem being we lack talent, strength and depth. If we do get first use our conversion rate is great so we take the chance on more possession in the midfield while losing little comparatively going forward.

Ryder gets selected to give the mids as much chance at first use as possible and if that means we are too tall and not as sharp in the forward line, on balance the selectors/coaches feel that they need to make that call.

Ross keeps getting games because we have no-one better in the extended squad, I can only imagine the melts if we picked DMac/Paton/Sinclair or even Bytel to replace him, also the reality is neither Clark nor Coff have shown much with their small midfield time so no joy there.

Byrnes is interesting and emblematic of our problem, a pick 52 in last years draft forcing his way in after 6 rounds, either he is fantastic and a phenomenal steal or our depth is bollocks; that Bytel isn't ahead of him is a worry.

Fabulous post Kildonan.
This is exactly what tipped me into disaproval of Seb.

Sitting in the stands where you can see the full flow of play, and the effort taken not only to get the ball forward, but all the work by the other players to run ahead of play, and the forwards in positioning for the f50 entry.
Then, in that critical moment where we've done the work and out-man the oppo, Seb hands it straight back to them and you can visibility see the boys deflate.
And it happens over, and over, and over again.

My final straw was in Tassi last year, or even the one before, when exactly that happened for the 3rd or 4th time in the game, and Seb, having just turned it over and standing flat footed, turns around and gives one of the young fellas a spray for being out of position defensively after he's just run his arse off from HB to assist play and was on the move back to defensive 50.

It made my blood boil. Every negative accusation you could throw at a footy player was born out in that 5 seconds of play.
And this is our captain in waiting, they say.

Since that day I've had my eye on him, and not even once have l seen anything to soften my opinion, though I've had it reconfirmed ad nauseum.

He's a bad influence. A triumph of mediocrity, entrenched and entitled under the Richardson regime.

I'm sure that there's a pin board somewhere in Lethers' home office with Sebs name on it, and a big fat X right through it.
You're actually boarding on delusional with some of the crap you're peddling about him right now.

Let's not allow a few disagreements about players divide us. This board is for fans to have their say. Many of us have not and probably will not get to see a live match this year. Our fan experience is watching the Saints on TV, a sprinkling of news and talking about them on this forum.

Let's try to allow other posters to have an opinion without criticising them for it.

If you disagree with what a poster says, state your view - even comment on how it differs from another poster's view. Just don't criticise that poster for having that view.

It is their right to have a view and it is also their right to post it here.

You do not have the right to attack or criticise other posters. You do that and you forfeit your right to post here.

Yet attacking players is ok. I find it strange you nearly say what you want about a player within reason of course but you can’t say that poster has lost the plot. If it wasn’t for our players we wouldn’t even be here. And this isn’t directed at scrappy even though I think he does look for to many negatives in Ross.

At what point does constant criticism of a player which is completely devoid of reality move from someone stating their view and turn into trolling?

From the board rules:

Please refrain from excessive or exaggerated criticism of St Kilda players, club personnel or the St Kilda FC itself. This board has a variety supporters who all hold individual views on how important or talented our players are. Posters have been known to exaggerate to stress their point. It is a common practice that will no longer be tolerated. We will edit or delete posts describing players as "useless" or "talentless" or any other exaggerated negative criticism. Similarly do not use excessive criticisms of club personnel (such as a coach or board member) or imply corruption or incompetence without significant proof. Do not unduly criticise the club. These actions can be hurtful to the individual involved or family members / friends thereof. Further they can result in legal action by the slandered person. Repeat offenders risk being permanently excluded from this board. Reasonable criticism is perfectly OK - especially when made in an immediate post match context.

The moderators will react when we believe that excessive or exaggerated criticism has been made by a poster. This is the moderators job, not yours. You may see someone post something that you are offended by or you feel fits in with "excessive or exaggerated criticism" - if you do then report the post. Please don't take action yourself.

Strange that you bring up posters and critisizing them but I’ve never seen any mod say be careful about criticising players. And as you quoted 2 of us I didn’t take action myself.

I'm not a big player bagger myself but wet pretty overboard this week. I have known people who have had family play AFL, and while players probably don't get on forums family do and it's distressing to see people potting people you know. I at least try to keep it to on field performance but when too far this week on a few.

It's not their fault they get drafted or traded to us. It's our fault for selecting them. I remember guys like Big Mart tearing into Jamie Cripps for pulling out of one contest.

I agree. I went pretty wild on Ross and Geary after last week, mainly because they are supposed to be leaders and showed nothing when we fell apart.
Like you I know families of AFL players one being this forum's favourite whipping boy now with Carlton.

Players deserve criticism where warranted, not personal abuse or incessant criticism without evidence

The idea of moving Savage into Long's spot makes sense from a like for like. Otherwise you could try an unproven kid out of position like Dingley or Byrnes. If we lose and it's because we had no drive off the backline we'll hate them anyway. Might as well put Sav in as a filler until Long has done his time. Webster the other possibility.
We could of very easily of used Savage to replace Long , however with Paton , Coffield , Hunter Clark , Geary all in the team do we really need another halfback.
It's great we actually have a first year draft pick who is a natural midfielder coming into the team / will be good to see how much midfield time they give him.
I'm more concerned about Ryder replacing Marsh - do we really need to two genuine rucks in the team - I agree with Plugger here.
I just hope the ruckmen can cause damage and if it is wet hopefully they only play one.

2016: 26.5 disp, 7.9 contested, 4 clearances, 4.4 tackles
2017: 29.9 disp, 9.8 contested, 4.3 tackles, 5 clearances,
2018: 30.1 disp, 9.6 contested, 4 tackles, 4.2 clearances
2019: 26 disp, 8.4 contested, 4.1 tackles, 4.2 clearances
Was looking at these the other day too and thinking, please Seb get back into 2018 form, but lower your eyes with your disposal. With our recruits and the growth of our young guns, we would be looking very strong if he can get back close to that form

I can Paton playing Longs Role and Geary going back to oppositions best small. Hopefully Paton finds some confidence in his ball use and decision making as he has been caught panicking On a number of occasions this year. Has still been solid this year but needs to tidy that up.

Don't want to put the pressure on young Kurns but geez I hope he's good enough to demand a spot.
If he and Bytel come on and can impact suddenly we're in a much better position.
They only have to better ross 14 moon ball possies to no one at 58%. Havent got much to beat

That's a good point. Players may potentially read it. Now what about the criticism of posters that definitely will read it. Isn't that far worse.

People should just be reporting posts instead of spending their time having a go at people.

.... that Bytel isn't ahead of him is a worry.

Let’s remember Byrnes played a full season last year whereas Bytel has had a long time out on the back of a big injury.
Not such a stretch for me that Byrnes gets first go at it.

Everyone needs to remember Bytel had played a game in 18 months due to his back issue and surgery. Don’t write him off or think Byrnes has gone past him, just can’t throw him in so quickly after that kind of an injury.
