The sides in the 8 are playing well enough to hold but outside the 8 you've got Collingwood, Brisbane, Gold Coast all pushing up from underneath. I reckon you could lock Geelong, Carlton and GWS into the top 8 already. Melbourne look good, Sydney, Port very likely.

Leaves Essendon, Dogs, Freo, GC, Collingwood, Brions and us playing for the last couple of spots. We look around the level of Richmond, West Coast and Adelaide at the moment. North and Hawks should finish in the last 2 spots. Injury might send the Tigers bottom 3 too.

I think we likely finish bottom 6 anyway. Playing guys like Bonner and underdone Butler are only going to hold a kid out that at least develops.
The same was probably said last year at this point before we ended with 2 preliminary finalists who had 4 wins each at the mid point of the season. 17 rounds left, long way to go.

One week ago we were on the right track despite the injury issues after at least giving ourselves the chance to win every game. Now it's pity party time where fans now compete on who can have the most miserable outlook on the season and project the worst outcome possible.

Maybe we improve, maybe we dont. But we should give our players the chance to respond to the criticism and bad performance like we always expect our upcoming opponent too.

I dont know if Dixon or Finlayson will be back for Port and Cordy hasnt done anything wrong, but I think we need to find a way to get Howard back into the side.

Team vs Port

Stocker Howard Wilkie
Sinclair Battle Naz
Byrnes Steele Hill
Owens Caminiti Membrey
Higgins King Garcia

Marshall, Windhager, Ross

Wilson, Bonner, Hayes, Dow
sub Jones

Outs: Phillipou, Sharman, Butler
Ins: King, Hayes & Dow

Ross to continue his tagging roles on one of the Port mids (good luck). Am hoping we can put in a competitive effort, but I wouldnt be surprised to see a one sided game.

People wanting to get games into Lance Collard cant have watched his VFL games. The kid has an inate goal sense there is no doubt, he is a classy finisher but IMO he is not ready for AFL games. He is paper thin and as a result is a little timid, consequently his defensive efforts require a lot of work. I dont know if we should be handing him games on the back of what he has shown in the VFL just yet.

I think we will be a different side when we start getting our senior players back and in form - Webster, Crouch, Wood and Henry are all citical players to a side that doesnt have huge depth.

Nice team but I’ve seen enough of Byrnes. Hayes could be a handy inclusion. If he’s in then Pou is out and I’d like to see him on his home deck in front of family.

Don't think we've been even close to good in any game this year. We've got away with two wins more than anything. Doubt we've even played one good quarter. We seem to rely on stifling opposition and then playing 10 minutes of attacking footy.

If we are going to play finals we are going to have to completely change tack. The game plan is awful and laborious. Not sure it will hold up against the best sides. Pies and Richmond were both rubbish when we played them.
yep and we lot 3 games by a total of 13 points without playing well

Some people have compared Pou to BJ's early days and I think it's a fair comparison - it also raises the question - what position or role does he end up with ? Fwd/Mid ? Mid ? Utility ? I don't know.
what worries me with Phillipou is his decision making slow and does short handballs and foot passes to players under pressure-ps not alone in this area-very little flair in hs game

I think that's also speaks to how the team is travelling atm - he seemed to find himself in space a bit more last season and
showed he had a few tricks in his kit bag.

It’s actually a very good comparison imo I think pou is a true utility, I don’t see him as a full time mid.

Think he plays as a running half forward/ mid longer term. Probably just runs through rather than full time though. He's excellent overhead for his size.

Absolutely annihilated in the midfield last week.

I was surprised how bad it went.
Maybe I shouldn’t have been.

We got smashed all last year.
When we lost we pointed to the midfield.
When we won, half the time we were still smashed in the midfield but held up in the arcs.

That midfield was(by CBA)
1.Steele
2.crouch (out injured this year)
3. Ross
4. Clark. (Out injured this year)
5. Gresh (nicked off last year)
6. Sincs

We got Dow who is a very good centre clearance player (Ave 2.5 last year)
and many would argue he was supposed to push to #3.

We got Henry as an attacking winger to compliment wood.

Now starting without both first choice wings.
Lost our #2 and possibly #3 mids.

Relying on Windhager a kid and Garcia literally his 2nd game as starting mids now. Just thrown to the wolves.

Banger said on 3aw pregame last week that Owens enjoys playing forward the most and sees himself as a forward but also enjoys being thrown around the ground given assignments.
He said Owens and Phillipou at the moment both struggle getting lost in the heavy traffic of the centre square.
Banger knows a thing or 2 about playing in the guts btw haha

Hopefully more people hear this.

Both of those 2 guys are more natrual forwards than mids, However Pou wants to be a mid and will end up one, Owens wants to be a forward that spends occasional time in the midfield.

Windy was also having issues getting lost in the heavy traffic last year but he appears to be working that out now.

Interesting stats around, but pretty telling that any team who can kick 11 goals against us will probably win. We have been able to hold teams to lower scores, but we can't actually kick big enough scores to really go much further.
Two deficiencies from last season have not been addressed and are actually getting worse- not being able to kick enough goals, and poor midfield clearance work. Lyon needs to get on his bike and look at some different strategies.

Not tank. Not continue to rush back GOPs to prop up a lost season. Put time and effort into the kids. I'd rather get 15 games into Schoenmaker than lose by 5 points instead of 25. I reckon our season was close to over when we lost to Essendon. It's an even season and losing to sides around your level is setting yourselves a long way backwards.
I daresay that will be on the cards anyway if we hold this formline at the bye

We were s**t. Half arsed chasing, greasy marking, bombs into forward space. That's why we lost and lost badly, nothing tactical.

Bevo praised the selfless defensive work of the guys that shut down our rebound. Said the goal kickers got all the applause but those guys won them the game.
