Certified Legendary Thread Sack Hinkley 12 - Finals Are Scary

What’s really depressing me, is that we blew more first round draft picks to give this guy more missing pieces only to be told by the nation’s footy “experts” that our list is still not good enough to be a contender. Now we have to stuff around with trades to get first picks back in, our depth is crap (irrespective of what some here believe) and we don’t have the excitement of welcoming a gun 18 yo onto our list unless we lose our dual AA, best kicking HBF.

Yep we mortgaged our future for this guy and the worse part is the guys we traded in may not even feature under a new coach

You just can't employ a coach who is so easily riled up over a social media comment.

His reaction to it post Hawthorn game really is a sackable offense, disgraced the entire football club on the national stage.

Embarrased everyone involved. Going right down from the top, that's you Kochie, Kennys jut made a fool of you for extening his contract, all the board members, players, other coaches and managers, members and supporters right down to the bootstudder......yet here we are.

Sack Hinkley.

His only motivation is emotion, usually the emotions surrounding his impending sacking, which is why we're so insanely bipolar in terms of when we turn up. He panics in big games and the team panics.

Emotion just doesn't work as a motivator. It's not sustainable. The players actually have to believe they can win.

And the list we blew draft picks to fix was the "best list he'd ever had".

He's a fraud, always kicking the can just a little way down the road to a future time where success will come while good clubs and coaches just get on with winning a flag occasionally.

It's like kicking a dead horse on this subject. We know what should be done, but deep down, we all know what's going to happen. He'll be the coach next year; there's almost no doubt about it.

Besides all the other valid points as to why Hinkley should go the board seems to miss one of the most valid. Hinkley hasn't evolved either as a coach nor has his gameplan. It's the same as it was in 2013. Every sport on the planet coaches evolve. Even the teams that win they have to evolve to stay on top. You see it in every sport, including the AFL except at Port Adelaide. Somehow the idea that if we keep doing the same thing we'll eventually win prevails. When it's proven that it doesn't and won't work. It's one of the biggest reasons why we are stuck as being near enough but good enough.

I've given up on anything happening with Hinkley. He'll be Port Adelaide coach next year as Koch has already nailed his flag to that mast. That's the end of it and it was a fortnight ago.

It’s not the same gameplan, though. We actually played an exciting brand of football, based on the ‘slingshot’ rebounding from defence and the Burgess-fuelled overrunning opponents gamestyle, in 2013-14.

In the following offseason, there was rumblings of “these guys don’t know how to play yet, just wait til they learn” and we came out with a possession retention style which was absolute pus, getting rolled by the literal worst teams in the comp (Carlton and Brisbane), among many others, having entered the season as red hot premiership favourites.

Bassett signed up for 2016 and then we adopted his high pressing defensive style, which we have ever since. The football has been absolutely disgraceful to watch, even if we have habitually defeated the bottom 10 teams regularly. It is, of course, highly taxing, woefully inefficient, and doesn’t hold up against any half decent team.

Somehow much of our fan base have been locked in some form of trance since the actually good now years of 2013-14 (did the Wingard hypnosis video clip actually have broader consequences? 🤯).

Those seasons, which were inarguably good, have in fact done untold damage on account of Ken being convinced he has the Midas touch. But yes, your overall point holds true post-2016

Stewey Dew assistant coach?

Dew is an interesting one, you'd think he's going to be a senior assistant type at the very least given his experience. Going after a name like that suggests to me that they're thinking about life after Hinkley, but who knows.

Having two viable head coaching replacements in the box couldn’t be a bad sign.

Ken would feeling a bit like Scotty Ninnis when the 36ers signed up a long-time NBA assistant, and Serbian national team assistant, the former who would go on to become the head coach before a ball was dribbled in anger.

I still think that the gameplan worked… at Richmond. They did it better.

Spot on, 2013-14 we also had a much more open forward line and we were defensive good enough because our numbers dropped back without the high pressing that we now do. Fitness levels were also better so there were more overlap runs and speed which, combined with an open forward line, allowed us to hit leads and enter with more efficiency.

You know what changed in end of 2015? And it's not on this player at all, it's not his fault we solely relied on him. But its the arrival of Charlie Dixon. I was thrilled when we got him cause he was the exact player we needed.

But boy did I not realise we were putting all our eggs in one basket. In hindsight, again not Dixon's fault, but it could be a sliding doors moment. Would Port's hands be forced to change their forward entries without Dixon in the squad at all in the last 9 years? We'll never know, but if I were to bet on either side I'd say we wouldn't have the issues we have had in the 7 years if we didn't have Dixon, or a similar player.

We know it. You know it. It has been for years.

I have no idea why a mod woke up one day and decided that the “threadrea” dedicated to the issue was unnecessary. It was merged with another one and disappeared.

It was called “David Koch and the Vanillarization of Port Adelaide”. It was created NINE YEARS AGO in July 19th, 2015.

This is the OP by tribey:

It’s going to take a lot of time to undo all that has been done.
This thread is always why I'm a bit tin hat about the influence of the club and Koch on this forum because the vanillarisation was so apt and horribly true but it got changed.

There was no real reason to change it.

IIRC I think it just turned into just DAvid Koch and then it was realised it needed a bigger title and then you've got two working titles with David Koch, the real one and the fake one.

Threads about Hinkley just usually make their way into the Sack Hinkley thread eventually.

The AFL, the AFL media, the PAFC and its media arm are very active in trying to quell anything remotely negative about the club and especially the players but Hinkley is in another fantastical bubble.

I like Chewy but if you read his words of wisdom but if you read between the lines, , you can see where his allegiances are.

Back to Ken, if he coaches next year, it could be an unmitigated disaster like Charlie Dixon this year and Tom Jonas and Scott Lycett the year before.

If Ken decides to play his high press gameplan, play his gold passes, play our stars injured, etc, the pressure could be too much and the white noise could turn to continual booing. Anything bad will be met with severe hostility.

My fear is that with another goodish year, Butters and Bergman will definitely leave back for home but a new coach and a new voice and a winning attitude could change their minds.

The other alternative is that we play well enough, make a prelim and extend Hinkley for another 3 years.

Same. It's time I break up with pafc. Causes more heartache then it's worth these days.

The worst thing is kerny has turned our players into a pack of losers who are satisfied with just making the finals. We finished second, yet I didn't hear one comment about it burning in the guts that they weren't out there on grand final day, or that watching Brisbane celebrate made them want to push harder next year. Nope, just a mission accomplished vibe for winning one final and talk of how incredibly proud they were.

Look how gutted Hawthorn were when they lost. That's a culture that drives success. We're scared of finals and glad when they're over.

And ken Hinkley is the never-ending nightmare who drives it all

if you read between the lines,

Chewy316 defends Koch openly. No need to read between the lines.

Moreover, although I think he wants Hinkley gone, he never said he’s acting to sack him. He merely shares with us some of the intel he gets from people in the club.

There are others who do the same. We take what we get, and we try to figure out what’s actually going on there. That’s the whole thing, really.

Yep. It’s the weirdest thing that happened in this board since I’ve joined BigFooty.

The Sack Koch thread is there, but it’s currently nothing. Would it disappear if it eventually gets track?

One can wonder…
