The Brisbane comparison is really only isolated to since Fagan took over, but you make a good point.

Brisbane also has access to academy players like Andrews and Hipwood.

Harris Andrews is 22 years old and he's played 92 games. Hipwood is 21 and he's played 70 games. That's what you can do when no one cares if you finish last.

Andrews could easily become a 300 game player by the time he's 30. Ditto Hipwood...and they are key position players. Add guys like McLuggage, Berry and Rayner to the mix - top ten draft picks that will play every game they are available and will probably end up being 250 game players as well - and you can see why they are young. It's because they accepted being shit for so long.

Trying to compare the situation we are in to what Brisbane is doing is pointless. They are an outlier with completely different rules.

You mean like how Brisbane has missed finals since 2009 and has finished bottom four in the past seven years, yet this board holds them up as the paragon of what we should be doing because they are a young team?

Imagine this place if we finished bottom four seven years in a row.

Brisbane had a genuinely garbage list on the back of trading away their future in the crazy Vossy years. They then lost a series of gun players who didn't want to stick around for a rebuild.

Imagine if we'd lost Boak, Hartlett and Gray when the vultures were circling like Brisbane lost Polec, Yeo and Docherty.

Brisbane improved as their list improved and are more than the sum of their parts. Since 2015, we've always been less than the sum of our parts despite making significant improvements to the list.

Brisbane will finish top 4 this year, something we haven't done since 2007.

It's not about always winning, it's about a coach making a group of players better than the sum of their parts.

The problem is the lack of port people and football people, people who accept mediocrity and are happy with simply surviving.

To be fair we should not expect to make a grand final on every second year, after all the AFL nowadays is certainly tougher than the old SANFL.

Personally I have lowered my expectations to the point where I'd have no issues with aiming to make a prelim every second year.

But aiming lower than that? Geesh what a load of crock.
